The successful transition from boyhood to manhood is one of the most important male life transitions. Teenage boys at risk of school exclusion, and thus social exclusion, face added difficulties when school participation becomes dysfunctional. Men’s Sheds are community-based male-friendly places where men can connect with other members of their communities, while simultaneously providing opportunities to learn practical skills and develop new interests. Many Australian Men’s Sheds are offering intergenerational mentoring programs, usually based on shared construction projects, specifically targeted at teenage boys who are considered at risk. This paper presents descriptive qualitative data about one such intergenerational mentoring program. Data were collected from interviews with 4 teenage boys, a school Transition Advisor, and written teacher evaluations. Descriptive findings suggest that such programs offer some teenage boys a positive space to learn, socialise, promote tangible notions of community service, and reinforce respectful relationships in the supportive presence of older men.

Infertility Problems and Mental Health Symptoms in a Community-Based Sample: Depressive Symptoms among Infertile Men, but Not Women

Most researchers agree that men’s and women’s experiences of infertility are fundamentally different, and impacts upon the nature of psychological distress encountered. However, design flaws, including non-random samples unrepresentative of the general population, compromise many existing studies. Data derived from a random general community sample provides prevalence of current infertility, and permits examination of longitudinal associations between mental health symptoms and infertility among 1,978 participants aged 28-32 years. In the previous 12-months, infertility was experienced by 2.1% and 5.4% partnered men and women. Infertility independently predicted depressive symptomatology in men, and anxiety symptoms among women. Gender differences were sustained, even controlling for prior depression and anxiety. Health professionals are encouraged to proactively enquire about affective symptoms experienced by both women and men with infertility problems.

The Relationship Between Conformity to Masculine Norms and Men’s Health Behaviors: Testing a Multiple Mediator Model

Relationships between men’s scores on subscales of the Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory-46 (CMNI-46) and the Health Behavior Inventory-20 (HBI-20) are complex. Some subscales appear to act as risk factors, as predicted by the Gender Role Strain Paradigm (GRSP), and others as protective buffers, as predicted by positive masculinity and social norms theories. We compared the relative strengths of these two theories in explaining the buffering effects by assessing the roles of two theorized positive aspects of the traditional masculine role (general self-efficacy and emotional stability) and a key construct of social norms theory (perceptions of men’s normative health behaviors) in mediating the relationships between CMNI-46 and HBI-20. We evaluated a multiple mediator model of these relationships with 585 men who responded to an online survey. Emotional stability was not a mediator, but general self-efficacy and perceptions of normative health behaviors together partially mediated the relationship between CMNI-46 and HBI-20, transmitting a protective buffering effect. However, an examination of the individual mediating effects indicated that perceptions of normative health behaviors better accounted for the buffering effect. The results are discussed in terms of future research, implications for health care practitioners, and limitations.

The purpose of this study was to explore retirement-age men’s perceptions of body image and embodied experiences of aging. Individual interviews and follow-up focus groups were conducted with fifteen Canadian men aged 60 to 70. Data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically. Findings highlighted the complex perceptions of body image for older men. Findings suggest that participants placed more emphasis on function than on appearance, with men feeling that aging played an important role in body image attitudes and how they viewed themselves through their bodies. The findings also suggest that gender and to some extent masculinity played a role in participants’ body image and embodied experiences. Implications in light of existing literature and directions for future research are discussed.

Identity formation and negotiation is a key contributor to the health and wellbeing of men and much is still to be learnt about how identity processes operate in everyday life. This study used an ethno-discursive methodology informed by critical discursive psychology to investigate adult male identity in an everyday gym setting in inner city Melbourne. Analysis of interview data showed that men identified with shared hegemonic definitions of masculinity, such as autonomy, independence, and potent heterosexuality. Our ethnographic analysis also showed that the men used reflective processes to negotiate, subvert, and exaggerate these discourses. The findings further demonstrate the utility of safe male environments such as gymnasiums and men’s sheds where men can share friendships, common activities, and negotiate masculine pressures.

Background: No physical activity (PA) interventions have specifically targeted Latino men despite marked health disparities in this group. Therefore, we explored the feasibility of designing a PA intervention for Latino men. Methods: We conducted six qualitative interviews with Latino men and used their feedback to modify an existing PA intervention, then conducted a 12-week demonstration trial of the adapted intervention. Results: Themes from interviews included work and family conflicts and preferring team sports. In the demonstration trial of the modified intervention, participants (N = 10) increased PA from 1.3 minutes/week (SD = 4.75) at baseline to 125.5(SD = 154.86) at follow-up (p < .05). Retention was high and participants expressed enthusiasm for the program. Conclusions: Existing interventions could be effectively modified to target physical activity in Latino men.

In men’s health research, an important gap exists in how we explain differences in health among men. Though scholarly contributions to men’s health disparities are growing, there continues to be a lack of discourse around concrete solutions that can be applied to reducing or eliminating differences in health outcomes between groups of men. This is the first special issue dedicated to describing strategies for addressing men’s health disparities globally and across racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. Collectively, these papers represent a range of efforts to not simply explain men’s health disparities, but to describe interventions or findings in such a way that they inform strategies to reduce or eliminate men’s health disparities. This body of work uses a variety of research methods, captures global, social and economic developmental issues, and provides practical solutions that can be implemented by various stakeholders at various levels.

There is increased recognition that the inequitable distribution of social determinants acts as a stressor that influences health outcomes. Men on the Move’s Leadership and Job Readiness (LJR) program was developed to improve employment opportunities and build leadership capacity for African American men living in a rural community. Pre-post questionnaires and interviews were conducted with participants to assess the immediate impact of LJR. Paired t-tests indicated that those respondents who were out of work significantly increased certain dimensions of their hope scores. Results also indicated increases in some elements of active coping and decreases in risky behavior. Using a linear regression model, increased hope was found to be a significant predictor of improvements in participants’ coping and behavior scores. Qualitative interviews showed increases in communication, job readiness and coping skills as well as an increased sense of hope and understanding among participants of their role as leaders in their community.

This study examined the association between health information seeking and confidence to manage health among men using multiple binary logistic regressions. Study data were drawn from the 2007 Health Tracking Household Survey. The analytical sample included 6,478 men, 18 years and older. Health information seeking was associated with lower odds of confidence to follow through on medical care needed at home. African American and Hispanic men had lower odds than white men to agree to be confident to follow through on medical care needed at home. Hispanic men also had lower odds than white men to agree to be confident to know when to seek medical care and when they can handle themselves.

This study and its ancillary behavioral health program identified and addressed a Caribbean cultural paradigm that is no longer viable in 21st century Caribbean society. A complex web of cultural and social determinants binds Caribbean men in a depressing scenario of limited educational opportunity, inconsistent seasonal employment, and proclivity toward violence against women. Our study chronicles a Caribbean domestic violence initiative, Partnership for Peace (PFP), with qualitative data from 32 Grenadian male domestic violence offenders and nine of their female counterparts. We found that Caribbean-gendered relations are intrinsically linked, and any attempt to foster behavioral adjustments among male perpetrators will not be sustainable without addressing gendered disparities in education and employment.
