Very little is known about the economic consequences of men’s health disparities. Using data from the 2006 through 2009 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey and the National Vital Statistics Reports, we estimated the potential cost savings of eliminating health disparities for racial/ethnic minority men. The total direct medical care expenditures for African American men were $447.6 billion of which $24.2 billion was excess medical care expenditures. With regard to indirect costs to the economy, African American and Hispanic men incurred $317.6 and $115.0 billion respectively. These findings indicate that we cannot afford to overlook the disparities that exist, particularly among African American and Hispanic men. Failure to do so is both socially and morally wrong and carries huge economic consequences.

Exploring foodways as part of a cultural system of the Black barbershop, points to the ways in which community considers dietary behavior, ascribes meanings associated with food, constitutes the social structure and material culture affecting food, and instantiates the historical factors that contribute to the persistence or change in food behavior. By centering the role of foodways in the performativity of Black men’s food habits of acculturation, this paper illuminates cardiovascular screening as a health literacy intervention in Black barbershops. The role of health in the sustenance of Black men reveals unique dimensions of the intersections of food and performance. This paper locates the Black barbershop as a ritualized space of health and healing. Barbers are redefining their role in the African American community by crafting the barbershop as a critical space for performing health care intervention of treatment and control of high blood pressure among Black men.

Cultural norms that view men as peripheral to family life and to decision-making about parenthood have shaped mainstream research agendas and underlie the relative lack of research on men’s perspectives on fatherhood. This semi-structured interview study explored the subjective meaning of having children and being a father in the imagined future lives of 16 male university students in Australia. The men generally had well-considered preferences, attitudes and aspirations about fatherhood and shared them readily and articulately, challenging persisting gender stereotypes. We identified four themes in their talk. Fulfilment and contentment dealt with positively looking forward to an adult life encompassing satisfying work, marriage, and children. Traditional and new fatherhood described talk that simultaneously valued a traditional ‘breadwinner’ role and close, involved fatherhood, and generally failed to address the inherent contradictions in managing these two models of fatherhood. Time of preparation encompassed talk about the perceived necessity of finishing education, establishing a stable, financially rewarding career, and developing personal maturity as preconditions to fatherhood. Models of family and fatherhood referred to the men’s frequent reference to their own families as models that they wished to replicate or, at times, correct in their own fatherhood. Altogether, this study provides a justification for systematic and comprehensive research on men’s perspectives, preferences and attitudes regarding fatherhood and family.

Older men’s health status is of increasing concern given the rates of prostate cancer, genitourinary disorders and risk factors such as smoking in earlier life. There is limited research on the health status of Caribbean men, particularly Jamaicans. This paper documents self-reported health status of older men from a recent pioneer work in Jamaica. Older men (1530) were surveyed in a cross-sectional study. Cluster sampling with probability proportional to population size was utilized. Seventy- four percent reported health status as “good/excellent.” There was no statistical association between self-reported health of older men and area of residence or marital status. However, there was a positive correlation between health status and tertiary level education (p < 0.05). Domicile ownership, working status, age, visits to doctor/health centre within the last year and reporting current disease were independent predictors of health status. Cancer was the most frequently reported chronic disease (16.6%), followed by kidney/bladder conditions (12.7%), hypertension (9.2%) and prostate conditions (7.3%). Greater attention to cancer, kidney/bladder issues and prostate conditions is warranted. Programs focused on healthy lifestyles, including behaviour change, and routine screening for chronic diseases are recommended.

On the biomedicalisation of the penis: the commodification of function and aesthetics

This paper explores contemporary understandings and representations of the penis. It presents an overview of recent trends which re-frame long-standing penile anxieties within a new hybrid world of health and aesthetics. It explores these apparent changes through the lens of biomedicalisation. By focusing on constructions of masculinities in crisis, changes in the representability of the penis and the effects of Viagra, it suggests that contemporary penile pathologies and anxieties are being constructed and commodified. In the past medical discourse has focused primarily upon the ‘traditional’ functionality of the penis, more recently it has focussed upon pharmaceutical innovations such as Viagra. However, we suggest that now there appears to be the emergence of a new penile discourse, a penile aesthetic that focuses upon penile appearance as much as function. This shift has been facilitated by the Internet, the deregulation of pornography and changes in sexual mores.

“Women Get Infected but Men Die …!” Narratives on Men, Masculinities and HIV/AIDS in Botswana “女人会被感染,但男人会死……!”

This paper uses a mixed-method approach of focus group discussions, key informant and in-depth interviews to explore representations of masculinities and maleness within the context of HIV and AIDS in Botswana. Men and masculinities are heavily implicated in Botswana’s HIV and AIDS epidemic through unequal gender power relations that have increased women’s vulnerability to infection. However, research in Botswana has failed to engage men and masculinities and thus generate the evidence base needed for programs aimed at male involvement. The pursuit of gender equality through women’s empowerment makes some men feel alienated and unsure about their identity and role in these programs, while others are suspicious of women’s empowerment, which they perceive as disempowering men in order to empower women. Research and programs need to adopt a gender discourse that incorporates men and masculinities, and includes the socio-cultural and other contextual factors that underpin gender inequality and increased vulnerability to HIV infection.

Men with muscle dysmorphia (MD) are preoccupied with the idea that their bodies are insufficiently lean or muscular. This study used multidimensional scaling analysis to explore distortions in male body perception associated with MD. Men aged 18- 46 were grouped into 41 low- and 16 high-MD samples using the Muscle Dysmorphia Inventory (Rhea, Lantz, & Cornelius, 2004). Participants judged similarities among photos of 27 male bodies (including icons representing Actual and Ideal Selves) and rated the bodies on nine attribute dimensions. MDS analysis found that both low- and high-MD men used the same dimensions in organizing their perceptions of male bodies, but high-MD men displayed significantly greater distance between Actual and Ideal Selves than did low-MD men on several dimensions. MDS is described as a useful tool for understanding the perceptual and cognitive distortions of MD that may have value in diagnosing MD, initiating therapeutic discussions, and evaluating outcomes.

Predictors of body dissatisfaction in Asian and caucasian males: A preliminary test of a three factor model

Jac Brown, Nicolas Bardoukas
This study explored the associations between body dissatisfaction (BD), internalization, acculturation, masculinity, femininity and appearance-based rejection sensitivity (ABRS). A web-based survey resulted in 55 Asian and 50 Australian Caucasian male university students between 17 and 44 years of age. Univariate analyses resulted in Asian males reporting significantly higher BD than Caucasian males. Bivariate correlations indicated that BD was significantly and positively correlated with internalization and ABRS in Asian and Caucasian males. Masculinity was negatively correlated with BD in Caucasian males only. Multiple regressions indicated that the only independent predictors of BD were internalization and ABRS. This study suggests that male Asian university students in Australia are at particular risk of developing body image disturbances, irrespective of their level of acculturation. Further studies replicating the influence of ABRS on a broader range of cultures and genders may help to investigate the generalizability of these findings.

Critical Comments About the Body and Muscle Dysmorphia Symptoms in Collegiate Men
Pub Date : 2013-04-01 DOI: 10.3149/JMH.1201.17

The goal of the current study was to examine the relationship between critical comments that men recall others making about their bodies and their current level of muscle dysmorphia (MD) symptoms. It was expected that higher levels of MD symptoms would be associated with remembering comments, severity of the comment, and negative emotions associated with the comment. Participants were 118 college men. Results indicated that no significant differences were found on MD symptoms between participants who recalled comments about their bodies and those who did not recall such comments. However, analyses revealed significant relationships between severity level of the comment and MD symptoms. Also, more negative reactions to the critical comment were associated with higher levels of MD symptoms.

Rethinking Gender and Health: Some Insights From the Italian Experience
Pub Date : 2013-03-22 DOI: 10.3149/JMH.1201.42
Paola Adinolfi, Raffaele Adinolfi
In Italy gender-based health studies and policies focus on women, since it is widely assumed that the socio-economical inequalities that privilege men also favour men’s health. The present article, which is the first part of two-linked papers, fills a gap in knowledge by examining how Italian men manage their unique health challenges compared to women, all the while navigating a “familistic” welfare system. A critical analysis of secondary data allows for debunking some myths on gender and health in Italy: it shows the lack of gender-specific studies on men’s health that take into account socio-cultural factors, as well as significant male disadvantage in terms of health. The men-women divide concerning health appears to be greater in Italy than in Europe, thus pointing to the important role played by socio-cultural factors, such as familism. Information gaps and topics requiring focus are identified, in order to pave the way for Italian policy-making relative to men’s health.
