Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is reviewed from an epidemiological perspective. OCD is defined according to the DSM-IV and ICD-10, with differences noted between these two classification systems. The epidemiological rubrics of quantity (prevalence), location (genetic methods and gender differences), cause (genetic etiology), and causal mechanisms (natural history and clinical course) are reviewed. The review concludes that more research is needed to further understand the epidemiology of OCD in children and adolescents, both from a Canadian and worldwide perspective.

This study of a Cognitive Behavior Therapy group examined the process of self-monitoring by adolescent females with eating disorders in group treatment. Five females, aged 17-18 with Anorexia Nervosa (n = 2) and Bulimia Nervosa (n = 3), participated in an 8-week treatment group. Self-monitoring occurred on 50% of the days and was highest during the first 3 weeks of treatment. Commitment to monitoring was related to the girls' self-reported readiness to change. Girls with Anorexia self-monitored as frequently as those with Bulimia. The clinical usefulness of self-monitoring with adolescents is discussed.

Repetitive self-injurious behavior (SIB) is frequently seen in depressed adolescents. In addition to it providing relief for dysphoric symptoms there is evidence of an addictive component to this behaviour. Because auricular acupuncture (AA) has been shown to be effective as an adjunct treatment to cocaine dependence, we wished to test the feasibility and potential efficacy of this treatment in depressed adolescents with repetitive SIB. Our pilot results suggest that AA is an acceptable treatment in this group and that it may be an effective adjunct treatment for repetitive SIB. Moreover, decreases in SIB were evident while depressive symptoms remained unchanged.
