In the book review, column editor Christian Robert reviews three books: Casanova’s Lottery by Stephen Stigler, Bayes Factors for Forensic Decision Analyses with R, and Bayesian Probability for Babies by Chris Ferrie and Dr. Sarah Kaiser. Casanova’s Lottery tells the “history of a revolutionary game of chance.” Bayes Factors for Forensic Decision Analyses with R provides a sort of blueprint for using Bayes factors in forensics for both investigative and evaluative purposes, including R code and free access to the whole material. The final book tells story follows two young girls competing for dinosaur expertise and being rewarded by cookies, in proportion to the probability of providing the correct answer to two dinosaur questions.

R. Wasserstein
What ignites your passion, feeds your frustration, or impresses you with its beauty or power? What is the “one thing” you want to tell some¬one who is interested in statistics and data science about sta¬tistics? These are the questions to be answered by this new column, “One thing about…,” which will invite contributors to share their unique perspectives on statistics and data science. In the inaugural column, Ron Wasserstein who is the executive director of the ASA and the column editor shares his “one thing.” Statistics does not magically get rid of all the uncertainty of life. But it helps us know how certain we reasonably can be.

Why Testing? Why Should It Cost You?

Abstract The authors of this essay consider the costs of the errors that occur in any kind of decision making. In a binary decision there are always two kinds of errors that can be made – saying ‘yes’ when you should have said ‘no’ (a false positive) or saying ‘no’ when you should have said ‘yes’ (a false negative). Choosing a decision-making strategy by simply adding up the number of each of two kinds of errors is only sensible if the costs of each of the two errors are equal. This is rarely the case. The authors explore these ideas in the context of college admission and testing.

Abstract In February 2021, Allen Hillery, Athony Starks, and Sekou Tyler, started the #DuboisChallenge, and annual online challenge where participants use modern data visualization toolssuch as R, Python, and Tableau, among others, to recreate the data visualizations by W.E.B.Du Bois. The challenge took place again in February 2022 and it was featuredin 2021 and 2022 as part of the weekly online data visualization event TidyTuesday( https://github.com/rfordatascience/tidytuesday ). This column presents examples of activities for the classroom that are inspired by the #DuBoisChallenge.

Climate Risk Analytics

Abstract With the increasing recognition of the impacts and growing costs due to climate change, there is a growing demand for actionable assessments of climate risk from business, industry, and governments. The assessment of climate risk is at the heart of climate risk analytics, and these assessments can be used in a variety of use cases. This article explores the use cases such as the impact of extreme weather events and regulatory response and disclosure. The paper also explores the critical impact of the statistical sciences on climate analytics as a growing field and discusses the opportunities for statisticians and data scientists.

Abstract We have been looking up at the stars for millennia, trying to figure out our place in space, making small steps out and sending probes out even further. We are space travelers and, for the foreseeable future, Earth is our “mother ship.” To sustain our voyage through space, we need to look out for stressors, overheating and, particularly, new energy sources for our ship. We need to monitor its integrity, repair components that are broken, and establish long-term maintenance protocols. That is, mitigation is needed at scale, and we need to plan and action it now! We have scientific knowledge about different parts of the ship with differing degrees of certainty, but the message is clear that it is in peril from overheating. Unfortunately, there are many captains to report to, with different priorities. While they demur, deflect, and disagree, Earth is rapidly approaching a waypoint where mitigation will not be enough, and adaptation for a fast-changing climate will be part of our future.

Advisory Committee on Climate Change Policy: A Committee of the American Statistical Association

Abstract This article describes the work of the American Statistical Association (ASA) Advisory Committee on Climate Change Policy (ACCP) which was established in 2008. The committee’s earliest activities included meetings with Congressional committee staffers to hear firsthand their views on climate change, how or whether it should be addressed, and how the statistical perspective may be helpful. Building on the successes in raising awareness on Capitol Hill and beyond regarding the reality of climate change, the group is now pivoting to an emphasis on promoting solutions to climate change. These new efforts will ultimately enable statisticians and data scientists to engage more deeply in the research that is critical to society proactively and successfully addressing the intensifying impacts of climate change.
