In this review of basic principles of cognitive behavioral therapy, application to treatment of anxiety in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is outlined and evidence for effectiveness presented. The links between social anxiety disorder and social communication impairment are explored, and the issues raised by applying principles drawn from psychology to clinical practice in speech-language pathology are discussed. Suggestions for clinical practice are offered, along with reflections on the potential for increased collaboration between cognitive behavioral therapists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to better serve individuals with ASD. Outcomes for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) can be impacted by many factors, including co-morbid psychiatric factors. In working on clinical pragmatics with individuals on the autism spectrum, it is not uncommon to come across clients who have a clinical diagnosis of anxiety disorder. Often, the symptoms of that disorder are present primarily in soci...

This paper describes the multilinguistic spelling assessment and treatment protocol for aseventh-grade male student using a collaborative approach between a speech-languagepathologist and librarians. Working together, the team used internet search tools toprovide authentic reading and writing materials for generalization of acquired word studyskills. Specific goals and activities were tailored to meet the student's needs byintegrating 5 linguistic awareness components of word study instruction.

There has been an increased emphasis on caregiver-implemented intervention in the field of early intervention. However, this form of intervention can be effective only if the provider has the skills to teach, scaffold and coach the caregiver within a supportive, collaborative partnership. This article describes More Than Words—The Hanen Program for Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, a manualized parent-implemented intervention for groups of parents and caregivers. In this program, the speech-pathologist assumes the role of mediator, utilizing specific techniques and activities based on adult education principles, providing a multifaceted, collaborative learning experience that enables parents to become effective language facilitators for their child.
