When it comes to herd health issues in the GB dairy herd, lameness is currently heading the agenda. Practicing cattle veterinary surgeons might interpret this as a cause for alarm or as an opportunity. The past decade has seen some important developments to reinforce an evidence-based approach to helping farmers improve foot health. With the correct training, veterinary surgeons should feel confident that their input will be both effective and valued.

Over 90% of antibiotic use data is now captured within UK poultry, pig and aquaculture sectors. While dairy, beef and sheep lag behind, a new database promises to change this. So how – and why – should veterinary surgeons engage with the new Medicine Hub?

Ewe colostrum quality on commercial Welsh sheep farms
Pub Date : 2022-01-02 DOI: 10.12968/live.2022.27.1.40
Phillipa Page, G. Sherwin, Rosalie Sampson, K. Phillips, F. Lovatt
In advance of the 2020 lambing season, 147 Welsh farmers were engaged in active colostrum management through training and discussion groups. Sixty-four of these farmers returned data on 1295 ewes, including ewe age, breed, body condition score (BCS), number of live and dead lambs born, a description of udder condition, colour of colostrum and a Brix reading. Flock numbers were available from 43 farmers and information on late pregnancy ration from 30 farms. Results were analysed using a Brix reading cut-off of 26.5% and showed that 76% of samples exceeded this level and were considered of good quality. With an average of 20 ewe colostrum samples returned per flock, the greatest variation was found to be at the flock level with ewe nutrition considered to be the greatest driver. Concentrate feed space, silage crude protein and the supplementation of concentrates to twin and triplet-bearing ewes were all factors that indicated a potential flock level role in determining the colostrum quality. Individual level ewe factors appeared to have a much smaller role in determining the quality of the colostrum, with the ease of stripping being the main significant factors. Colostrum quality was more likely to be inadequate if the ewe was reported to be hard to strip (OR 0.56). While not significant in the final regression model, other ewe factors appeared to have an impact on the colostrum quality, such as the BCS and number of lambs born; however, lack of significance in the model may mean they are not significant or that they reflect differences in management between different flocks. As UK sheep farmers prepare for lambing 2022, and continue to optimise colostrum management and reduce levels of antibiotic given to neonatal lambs, this practical study has demonstrated how sheep farmers can be actively motivated to measure colostrum quality to determine how to optimally manage colostral antibody delivery to individual lambs.

Control of bovine tuberculosis and Johne's disease in cattle
Pub Date : 2021-11-02 DOI: 10.12968/live.2021.26.6.280
K. Cutler, R. Cavill, B. Griffin, P. Orpin, Sarah Tomlinson
If the diagnosis of mycobacterial disease in cattle is challenging, the diagnosis of infection is even more so. This is because of the biology of the organisms involved, the pathogenesis of the diseases characterised by uncertain, frequently prolonged and non-linear progression and intermittent shedding of the infectious organism, and limitations, particularly with respect to sensitivity, of the commonly used testing technologies and strategies. Infected animals, however, need to be identified and managed if disease is to be controlled and perhaps even ultimately eradicated. Possible strategies to facilitate this are discussed.

Abomasal ulcers in cattle
Pub Date : 2021-11-02 DOI: 10.12968/live.2021.26.6.274
Andrea Turner
Abomasal ulcers in cattle often present with non-specific clinical signs meaning that it is one of several differentials that may be relevant for a wide range of clinical presentations. This, combined with a lack of accurate diagnostic tests, makes the condition hard for the clinician to diagnose with confidence. The management and prognosis for cattle differ significantly depending on the severity and chronicity of an abomasal ulcer. It is important that clinicians are aware of the possibilities for diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of the varying forms of this condition so they can offer the most appropriate management plans for the individual animal in every case.

On-farm culture and pathogen identification: risks and benefits

Selective treatment of clinical mastitis cases based on the results of on-farm culture (OFC) has been suggested by several international experts. It is based on the theory that mastitis cases caused by Gram-negative species has high resolution rates, and those that do not resolve respond poorly to therapy. Several peer-reviewed studies have evaluated the accuracy of different OFC test kits, which are between 60–85% accurate at identifying Gram-positive pathogens. Implementation studies consistently show a reduction in antimicrobial use, although further research across larger populations is needed to assess the impact on mastitis cure. Any OFC protocol should be regularly reviewed with the herd veterinarian. Herds with a high bulk cell count, a high prevalence of Gram-positive pathogens (e.g. Streptococcus uberis), or with a high prevalence of Klebsiella spp. should carefully consider the impact of deferred or withholding treatment on mastitis cure.

Some skin conditions in pigs: types, control and prevention

Skin conditions in pigs are common problems presented to the veterinary surgeon. A careful clinical examination, especially considering the age of the pig and the distribution of the lesions, all aids making an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Pain management is essential in clinical management. Sarcoptic mange is a condition that can be eliminated from pigs and should be considered a welfare problem. Ear necrosis and trauma injuries can be particularly problematic and must be treated aggressively. African swine fever (ASF) presents with a range of clinical signs including skin lesions, and all veterinary surgeons must be able to put ASF as a differential where appropriate.
