In this work, we have analyzed the links between the structure of the individual open social networks and the ability to adapt to a context of technological change. We have used data from a sample of 371 employees in 133 branches of a big banking company. According to the findings, individual behaviors that explain individual task performance and individual adaptability are affected by a number of social links from which the individual receives support from inside, and also from outside, the organization. Results also show that individual performance is also affected by the level of altruism and help existing among the members of the organization. Furthermore, this positive behavior among the members of the firm fosters the positive effect that internal and external support exerts on individual adaptation to technological change.

Universities now play a major role in regional economic and social development. This new mission is transforming the traditional university into an entrepreneurial university. This entrepreneurial activity has mainly been carried out by transferring technology to industry; in particular by creating spin-off firms. Drawing on a resource-based view, the objective of this paper is to understand why some Spanish universities are more successful than others at generating spin-offs. In order to determine the factors that influence the spin-off activity, we used a balanced panel comprising all 47 Spanish Public Universities using information that is biannually available between 2002 and 2006. The results showed that university spin-offs are significantly positively associated with industry-funded research, the tradition of the university spin-off activity, the research orientation, and the existence of incubation services in the university. Furthermore, we also found some unexpected results which highlight some peculiarities of Spain and other countries with little tradition in university entrepreneurial activity, such as the absence of the effect of a Technology Transfer Office (TTO) on spin-off production.

This study contributes to the literature on university spin-off activity. First, there are no similar empirical studies about Spanish universities. Second, we set out several policies to improve the dissemination of scientific knowledge and technology transfer activities.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the effect of locating in science and technology parks and R+D+i cooperation on innovation. For this we have selected a sample of 784 companies, of which half are located in science and technology parks. Results show that companies located in a park are more innovative in the organizational and commercial activities, and companies that cooperate in R+D+i are more likely to be innovative in both product and process, as well as organizational and commercial aspects.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the evolution of research on technological innovation processes in companies. We have performed a bibliometric study of Revista Europea de Dirección y Economía de la Empresa, which is one of the leading Spanish journals on Company Management. We have analyzed 63 articles on technological innovation published in the mentioned journal for a study period covering the first 20 volumes of the journal (1992–2011). Different bibliometric methods and techniques have been applied (activity, first and second generation relational indicators) that have allowed us to describe the evolution of publication activity and to identify the most productive authors and universities, the most frequently used methodologies, the cooperation networks among them and the main subjects researched.

As a result of the development of emerging countries such as China and Brazil, the traditional competitive paradigm based on the cost benefits and efficiencies related to quality, are not enough nowadays. These paradigms related the classical competitive with the degree of technological innovation and the use of cluster resources by its members. However, the combination of adequate knowledge and relationship marketing management provides a review of current models of competition that goes beyond the traditional cluster analysis. The aim of this study is to analyze the governance structure of the territorial value chain in the Spanish ceramic tile cluster, through the understanding of past and current roles of the various sectors involved in the creation of the value system. Through the case study approach and quantitative methodology, the study explores the paradigm shift where the traditional actors in the value chain are losing their control over their contribution to the value creation system, while new players with a more stable and promising role are emerging.

The internationalization of R&D activities in countries different from that of the multinational's origin is a difficult decision. The local environment plays an essential role in that sense. Using case study methodology and taking seven subsidiaries with excellent research centers in Spain as a reference, the results show that the aspects related to technology supply have more power of attraction than those related to market demand. However, the Spanish environment is more attractive on the side of demand factors than by the supply ones; therefore, it explains the position of Spain as an intermediate country in attracting direct foreign investment in R&D and innovation.

We analyze the preference of technological firms for long-term relationships, instead of short-term contracts, as they engage in R&D outsourcing agreements with external partners. We draw from transaction cost theory and resource dependence theory to argue that this choice will be mainly determined by the attributes of the R&D service outsourced, and the company's need to secure the availability of external resources on a long-term basis. Using original international survey data on 90 R&D outsourcing agreements by European and U.S. companies operating in technology-intensive industries, we find that long-term relationships are preferred when the attributes of asset-specificity and frequency are present and when the level of resource dependence between the exchange parties increases. On the other hand, companies seem to prefer short-term contracts in order to follow a flexible R&D sourcing strategy. This preference appears to be higher for those companies that are more technologically competent, and when the underlying motive for outsourcing the R&D service is increasing operational flexibility, or overcoming the liability of foreignness when entering new markets.
