Headaches and migraines are frequent functional signs in our patients referred for assessment. The distinction is sometimes difficult to make for the patient himself or for the practitioner thus motivating additional examinations. A binocular imbalance can cause headaches and pain that are often resolved in whole or in part by rehabilitation.

« I often have a headache » is a sentense that is heard almost daily in our offices. If headaches can be the expression of a serious disorder, in most case, they are fortunately the consequence of a binocular imbalance, intermittent strabismus, maladaptive refraction… The case of Laurine shows that orthoptic management was sufficient enough to eliminate her discomfort and restore optimum visual efficiency.

This article offers a twofold look at the functioning of the migraine brain and more specifically at the problem of photophobia: both the point of view centred on brain functioning and the ophthalmological point of view through the study of visual evoked potentials and clinical studies in the literature.

Léna, a 12-year-old girl, comes to consult for a renewal of her optical correction. She complains of headache and blurred vision. The examinations carried out during the visual assessment followed by an ophthalmological consultation will make it possible to conclude the presence of bilateral papillary edema indicative of intracranial hypertension.
