AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE VIRUS OF FOWL-PEST 禽害病毒的实验研究

The results obtained from our experiments on the susceptibility of pigeons to the virus of fowl-pest, and some observations on the infected animals are briefly summarized as follows:1. The transmission of the disease to pigeons was successful by feeding a large amount of the virus, instillation into conjunctival sac, application to the scarified skin, or by cloacal injection, but not by the co-habitation of pigeons with affected fowls or pigeons.2. The virus seems not to be equally distributed in the organs of the affected pigeons, its virulence being proved very high in brain, less in liver, kidney and spleen, the least in testicle and no trace of the virus in cornea.3. The susceptibility of the pigeon differs with the age, young and old pigeons being less susceptible while the one weighing about 300gr. most susceptible.4. The successive passages of the virus through the pigeon is possible, and the virus passed through pigeons is able to produce the disease in chickens.5. Our observations on the changes in the blood of the diseased pigeons showed that within 3 to 4 days before the appearance of symptoms the pseudo-eosinophilic leucocytes increased reaching more than 2-3 times the numbers in normal cases while the number of lymphocytes decreased.

ON THE DISINFECTION OF ANTHRAX-SPORES WITH CHLORIDE OF LIME 石灰氯消毒炭疽孢子的研究

The disinfecting action of chloride of lime has already been confirmed by many authors, though its practical application was chiefly limitted to the purification of water. The reason of its narrow use in practice was thought to lie in its defective properties that quantity of available chlorine is not constant, and that free chlorine is easily consumed by oxidizable substances contained in infected materials. Recently, however, the application of chloride of lime is becoming wider, being used for the disinfection of fruits, vegetables, excreta, infected bath water and sewage. The present author thinking very desirable to get clearer insight to the nature of disinfection with chloride of lime, conducted the following experiment with the aim of increasing its disinfecting power and of reducing the consumption of free chlorine by oxidizable substances. The essentials of the results obtained are presented as follows. Relation between free chlorine contained in the solution of chloride of lime and its disinfecting power. Although chlorine does not exist in the solution of chloride of lime prepared with distilled water, except Cl' and ClO' yet its well-water solution may probably contain free chlorine in a small quantity. Having prepared the solution with well-water, I have estimated the chlorine content and tested its disinfecting power.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO BIOLOGICAL STUDIES ON THE VIRUS OF CONTAGIOUS PLEURO-PNEUMONIA IN CATTLE 牛传染性胸膜肺炎病毒生物学研究的贡献

For effective control of contagious pleuro -pneumonia in cattle, it is believed of importance to ascertain the biological characters of the virus of the disease. Extensive studies for this purpose have been made abroad, so that there is a number of valuable informations relating to cultural and biochemical surveys. However, biological characteristics of the virus have not been yet thoroughly demonstrated. As shown in our former publication, in growing the virus on culture media some particular efforts should de made to obtain positive results. Moreover, as for the tenacity of the virus against physical and chemical influences, our knowledge seems to be almost lacking. The possibility of the cultivation of the virus in vivo by sealing broth inoculated with a small quantity of lymph from affected lungs in a collodion sack and placing it in the peritoneal cavity of a rabbit was first demonstrated by Nocard and Roux (1898). Later they succeeded in cultivating the virus in the peritoneal cavity of cattle by a similar procedure, and also in Martin's broth added with cattle or rabbit blood serum (6-8%). DujardinBeaumetz found Martin's peptone and Martin's broth agar containing blood serum to be suitable media for the development of the virus outside the animal body. Furthermore, Marino used broth added with a few drops of an alcoholic solution of eosin blue for the estimation of development of the virus in fluid media. HISTOGENETICAL STUDIES OF ABDOMINAL CANCERS IN THE FOWL 家禽腹部肿瘤的组织遗传学研究

As is known, various kinds of interesting tumours occur in the fowl. At autopsy of 3150 hens, 350 cases of leiomyoma, 1 case of rhabdomyoma, 3 cases of fibroma, 4 cases of lipoma, 7 cases of sarcoma, 8 cases of lymphoma, 1 case of malignant adenoma, 3 cases of cystoma and 37 cases of intra-abdominal carcinoma were found. In 270 cocks, however, only 1 case of sarcoma was found.44 cases of carcinoma, including 7 cases which were collected from poulterers, have been studied histogenetically; it has been shown that 16 cases were resulted from the cells of oviduct gland, 1 case from the mucous membrane of oviduct, 9 cases from the paraovaries, 6 cases from the follicular cells of ovary, 1 case from the cells of the seminiferous tubule of the ovary, 1 case from the peritoneal ep thelium, 6 cases from the intestinal mucous membrane, 1 case from the epithelial cells of the bile duct duct and 3 cases from the adrenal cortex.

A STAINING METHOD OF GOAT COCCIDIUM AND COCCIDIUM CYST 山羊球虫及球虫囊的染色方法

A farm manager has recently visited me, complaining of a great loss among his goats, suffered from acute emaciation with anaemia after severe attacks of diarrhoea since January this year, and during a course of 3 months 37 animals have actually died of the disease. Most of them died in 2 days after the appearance of the symptoms. Post-mortem examination of the dead has shown a more marked change in the small intestine than in the large. Although there was not any sign of the skin symptom as Stevenson and Balfour indicated, I took the disease in suspicion of coccidiosis and wanted to examine the faeces of the diseased animals. A short time later, the manager sent me faeces from 7 goats that were ill. I have found numerous oocysts in 4 materials and in the rest of them no parasite, probably due to an elapse of days after the collection of the material.

Most of them died in 2 days after the appearance of the symptoms. Post-mortem examination of the dead has shown a more marked change in the small intestine than in the large. Although there was not any sign of the skin symptom as Stevenson and Balfour indicated, I took the disease in suspicion of coccidiosis and wanted to examine the faeces of the diseased animals. A short time later, the manager sent me faeces from 7 goats that were ill.
