Mesotheliomas are malignant neoplasms and cause severe and extensive lesions in the peritoneum, pleura, pericardium and adjacent organs. The present case study discusses the death of a jaguar (Panthera onca) kept under human care in a zoo in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, with an estimated age of 19-years-old. He presented increased abdominal volume, ascites, decreased displacement by the enclosure, inappetence and polydipsia. The patient underwent clinical, laboratory and diagnostic imaging tests and died after a short period of time. The anatomopathological results indicated the diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma, with metastasis in the mesenteric lymph node.

Environments for bathing and grooming procedures expose animals to a large number of stressors, such as dryer’s noise, changes in temperature and manipulation by strange people, causing apprehension, anxiety and fear that can lead to death due to physical trauma in attempts to escape or due to respiratory collapse secondary to acute stress. We report the case of a 6-month-old female Shih-tzu, with no previous signs of respiratory or cardiovascular disease, who died a few hours after bathing in a pet shop, with symptoms of stress and acute respiratory failure and with necroscopic changes compatible with hemorrhage and pulmonar edema, without signs of cranial trauma or trauma in other organs. The importance of minimizing stress in grooming procedures is emphasized, in order to avoid these acidentes, as well as the presence of the veterinarian responsible for the establishment, so that appropriate and early measures can be taken to prevent these potentially fatal conditions.

While diseases in humans seem to be an isolated concern, many are caused by zoonotic agents. The increasingly close contact between pets and their guardians must be considered, and investigations related to pathogens that are frequently found in humans and other animals must be carried out. Escherichia coli, in addition to being a commensal bacterium found in the intestinal tract of many animals, is one of the most frequent causes of several bacterial infections. Recent studies indicate that contact between humans and animals could contribute to the transmission between species of E. coli strains that produce extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and AmpC-type lactamases, which are antimicrobial-resistant (multi-resistant). However, more studies are needed for these assumption to be confirmed. This review addresses the zoonotic potential of E. coli based on research related to the finding of pathogenic strains in animals and humans.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, cutaneous asthenia or dermatosparaxis, is a rare genetic disorder that causes alterations in the synthesis of collagen fibers, resulting in hyperextensibility and dermal fragility. This paper reports the case of a nine-year-old bitch, of no defined breed. The diagnosis was obtained by the history of the animal and clinical examination. The cutaneous extensibility test resulted in an index value of 23.5% extensibility, higher than the normal value for canines (14.5%). To confirm the diagnosis, skin samples were taken for histopathological studies. For this syndrome, treatment is palliative, prioritizing the quality of life of the animal and environmental management.

Pyometra in felines may present with a vaginal discharge or no vaginal discharge, depending on the opening of the uterine cervix. The most obvious clinical signs of a closed uterine cervix pyometra are loss of appetite, apathy, lethargy, polydipsia, polyuria, hyperthermia and abdominal enlargement. The veterinary approach depends on numerous factors, but the patient is invariably submitted to an ovariohysterectomy. This case report discusses a puma (Puma concolor), aged over 16 years and under human care in a zoo in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, with clinical suspicion of closed pyometra. The patient underwent ultrasound examination, laboratory analysis and an ovariohysterectomy. The animal recovered well and returned to the display enclosure at the zoo.

Ophthalmic diseases in rodents are uncommon, but clinically importante. Eye diseases can cause pain and compromise the well-being of these patients. Roptosis of the eyeball may occur due to anatomical characteristics of rodents, which have a thin scler; and inadequate clinical management can also result in proptosis. We report the treatment of left eyeball proptosis of unknown etiology in a male cub Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus). Transconjunctival enucleation with adequate anesthetic protocol and perioperative care, resulted in a successful outcome. We emphasize the importance of understanding the peculiarities of a species still infrequently seen in clinical routine of small animal practice.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is defined as the structural and/or functional impairment of one or both kidneys of 3 or more months duration, and resulting in irreversible loss of renal functions. The International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) classifies CKD into 4 stages according to levels of serum creatinine and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), Urinary protein/creatinine ratio and systemic arterial pressure are subcriteria used in stating the disease. We reviewed the records of 50 dogs and 67 cats diagnosed with CKD. The staging criteria was recorded in 39.5% of the dogs (n = 32), and 60.5% of the cats (n = 49). Stage 1 CKD was diagnosed in 10 dogs (12.4%), while stage 2, 3, and 4 were diagnosed in respectively 4 (4.9%), 7 (8.7%), and 11 (13.6%) of the dogs. In cats, Stage 1 CKD was diagnosed in 8 (9.8%), and stages 2, 3, and 4 were diagnosed in respectively 18 (22.2%), 13 (16%), and 10 (12,4%) of the cats.

We report the use of neurolytic ethanolic suspension (NES) to promote acetabular desensitization in a dog with canine hip dysplasia (CHD). A male Dogo Argentino presented with a 120 days history of pain and lameness not responsive to conservative treatment. Acetabular chemical neurolysis was performed with a single application of NES The degrees of sensitivity and lameness were evaluated at 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours post-injection, and at 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days after the procedure. The use of NES in the hip joint capsule resulted in remission of lameness seven days after treatment, and was still effective at 180 days. This technique still requires further study, but demonstrates good prospects as a therapeutic option in the management of pain caused by Canine Hip Dysplasia.

Eventration is a separation of the musculoaponeurotic layers of the abdominal wall resulting in protrusion of abdominal contents, and characterized by the absence of the hernial sac and intact skin. We describe a case of chronic left sided eventration associated with deformity of the right femoral fossa in a 30-year-old female Argentine land tortoise. The animal was referred for evaluation of a soft and non-painful deformity of the left lumbar fossa and third degree lameness of the left posterior limb. Eventration of one bladder lobe and oviduct loops was diagnosed by ultrasonography. We describe the anesthetic protocol and the surgical technique used in the treatment with approach to the coelomic cavity through the prefemoral fossa, as well as the resolution of the abdominal wall defect.

Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne infectious disease caused by a bacterium belonging to the Anaplasmataceae family that can infect mammals. In Brazil, canine ehrlichiosis is caused by Ehrlichia canis, and it is endemic in some regions. The bacterium is transmitted by vectors, and especially the Rhipicephalus sanguineus. In cats the disease process is less understood due to scarce research, and lack of standardization of diagnostic tests. Lack of awareness of veterinarians about the importance of the disease in cats is also a contributing factor to scarce information. The available information suggests that the course of the disease in cats is similar to that of the dog. In this article we present a literature review on feline ehrlichiosis describing etiopathogenesis, methods of diagnostic, treatment, and prophylaxis strategies.
