Imaging exams are frequently requested during assessment of oncological patients. Although advanced imaging techniques are already available in veterinary medicine, radiographic and ultrasonographic exams remain the basic diagnostic tools in veterinary oncology. This review describes some considerations to improve clinical approach to animals with neoplastic lesions based on the use of radiographic and ultrasonographic exams. The role of these modalities in screening, diagnosis, staging, treatment choice, and follow-up of cancers is discussed. Additionally, a workflow for some type of tumors is described, such as mediastinal lymphoma in cats, as well as mast cell tumors and osteosarcoma in dogs. Situations that require other techniques are also discussed.

Lymphangiectasia is an obstructive disorder of the lymphatic system. In the gastrointestinal system, it may result in protein loss and enteropathy, which can lead to edema, ascites or pleural effusion. It can be either a primary (congenital) or secondary (acquired) disorder. The goal of this study is to report the case of a seven-year-old male Yorkshire Terrier that had a 30-day history of diarrhea and ascites. Laboratory tests disclosed hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia. Definitive diagnosis was achieved through endoscopic biopsy. The tutor reported significant improvement seven days after treatment onset. The animal was kept on a diet with fat restriction and remained free of clinical signs post-treatment.

The present report aims to describe a case of scrotal hypospadias in a four-month-old boxer. This anomaly was observed during physical examination of the reproductive system, which evinced an ectopic opening of the urethral ostium in the scrotal region, as well as penile underdevelopment and atrophy, malformation of the foreskin and dermatitis in the periurethral region. After additional tests, the patient was referred for surgery, during which amputation of the penis, orchiectomy and urethrostomy were performed. The patient presented excellent post-surgical recovery. The chosen surgical conduct was successful with respect to the clinical picture, and minimized complications due to hypospadias, ensuring a better quality of life to the patient.

The foramen magnum is normally rounded or oval in shape and has a similar diameter to the vertebral foramen of the atlas. Occipital dysplasia is observed is small breed and brachycephalic dogs, and is characterized by a dorsal widening of the foramen magnum caused by an incomplete ossification of the supraoccipital bone. There are divergent opinions in the literature regarding the clinical relevance of occipital dysplasia in dogs, and doubts remain as to whether this presentation is only an anatomical variation or an actual disease. The objective of this paper is to clarify aspects related to occipital dysplasia by means of a literature review on this subject, focusing on the anatomy of the atlanto-occipital junction, as well as the clinical and diagnostic aspects of occipital dysplasia in dogs.

Congenital anomalies of the reproductive system of cats and dogs are rare. Among these, the unilateral agenesis of the uterine horn (unicornuate uterus) is the most frequent anomaly. Due to its rarity and few reports in literature, the aim of this work is to report the finding of uterine segment aplasia in a bitch during elective ovariohysterectomy. Traction of the right uterine horn was attempted after a retro umbilical celiotomy, disclosing a malformation characterized by shortening of the uterine horn, which measured 12 mm with the ovary close to the reduced segment. Malformation encountered during surgical procedures result in difficulties for the surgical team and prolonged surgical time, since other organs and systems can also present anomalies and require therefore careful inspection.

A seven-year-old 26 kg male dog presenting preputial serosanguineous discharge and a cauliflower-like mass on the penile bulb region was attended at a veterinary school hospital. The mass was hemorrhagic and friable. Cytopathological examination disclosed a plasmacytoid transmissible venereal tumor. Antineoplastic chemotherapy was initiated, associating piroxicam (0.3 mm/kg at 48 hour intervals) and vincristine sulfate (0.75 mg/m2 each seven days). Since no tumor regression was observed after eight chemotherapy cycles, doxorubicin was implemented as a new therapeutic protocol (30 mg/m2 each 21 days). No improvement was observed. Thus, three cycles of cryosurgery were attempted, using a Cry-Ac equipment with closed-circuit tip. Total remission of the tumor was observed 21 days post-surgery.

Canine narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that affects the appearance and organization of sleep. It is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy and hypnagogic hallucinations. In Doberman and Labrador breeds, narcolepsy is transmitted hereditarily by the canarc-1 recessive gene, which has complete penetrance and causes a mutation in the receptor for hypocretin-2, a neuropeptide that prevents entry into REM sleep by activating specific neurons. Diagnosis can be achieved by observing the symptoms. Cataplexy is a key factor for diagnosis of narcolepsy and must be carefully distinguished from other neurological diseases and reversible paralytic disorders. Treatment is palliative and based on the administration of stimulants of the central nervous system (CNS) and tricyclic antidepressants.

Diagnosis of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis is complex and challenging, because no test is 100% sensitive and specific. The Brazilian public service employs the euthanasia of seropositive dogs as a control method. Additionally, veterinarians have difficulty in standardizing the serological diagnostic routine, due to the lack of technical and standardized methods and the use of exclusively qualitative serological tests for diagnosis. This scenario requires the search for more reliable and standardized tests in order to prevent the slaughter of false-positive dogs, vaccination of infected animals and unnecessary treatments as a result of test misinterpretation. This review aims to present and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of serologic tests used to diagnose the disease in Brazil.

Artificial insemination is a technique employed in dogs mainly when natural mating is not possible due to anatomical, behavioral or health problems. This article describes an intravaginal insemination performed in a two-year-old Brazilian Mastiff bitch. Vaginal cytology was the diagnostic method of choice for determining the stage of the estrous cycle: more than 80% of the cells were cornified epithelial cells, a feature of the estrus phase. Semen from a male Brazilian Mastiff was collected manually and inseminated fresh immediately after collection and also 48 hours later. Pregnancy was confirmed by ultrasound examination and radiography 56 days after first insemination. At least nine live fetuses were found; viability was proven by the presence of heartbeat.

Total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomy is a surgical procedure indicated for the treatment of chronic otitis externa and otitis media, aural polyps and neoplasia of external auditory canal in cats. Because of its complexity, there is potential risk of various surgical complications such as persistence or recurrence of infection, facial nerve damage, Horner’s syndrome, inner ear damage, auditory function impairment and poor ear carriage. Nonetheless, excellent results can be obtained by means of precise and meticulous surgical skills. Special attention should also be given to postoperative pain management due to the deep dissection in this kind of surgery. The aim of this review is to describe these feline ear diseases and the surgical technique of total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomy.
