The accelerated and disordered division of cells in the body results in neoplastic processes. Melanoma, a malignant neoplasm, is described in domestic dogs, and it has already been reported in wild carnivores. During a routine examination of an adult crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), approximately 14 years old and kept at the Sorocaba Zoo, presented a mass in the perineal region. A surgical procedure was realized to remove the mass, as it presented ulceration. The patient’s recovery was satisfactory and the animal was medically discharged. Cytological, histological and immunohistochemical tests were performed, and the results indicated amelanotic melanoma. This is the first report of amelanotic melanoma in a crab-eating fox kept under human care.

Reproductive changes are a common issue in the clinical management of domestically raised birds. Typically, these alterations result from inadequate environmental and dietary management, as well as inappropriate interactions between humans and their birds. Adjusting the environmental and dietary management is crucial for correcting these problems. However, in chronic and recurrent cases such as chronic oviposition and refractory prolapses, the use of medical therapy, hormonal treatments or surgery may be necessary. This study reports the results obtained from treating a female bird of the species Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), which, after experiencing chronic egg-laying episodes, suffered from a prolapse of the oviduct and cloaca, leading treatment through oviductectomy combined with the use of the hormonal implant Suprelorin®.

Canine visceral leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease endemic in Brazil, caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum and transmitted by the phlebotomine vector, Lutzomyia longipalpis. This study aims to present a literature review of the main characteristics of the disease, focusing on therapeutic and preventive measures in the Brazilian territory. Contaminated animals can remain asymptomatic from months to years, and although many drugs are used in their treatment, none has yet reached the parasitological cure, so those animals have an important role in maintaining the disease cycle. Moreover, the Ministry of Health (Ministério da Saúde) does not recommend treatment. Control and prevention measures are not completely effective. For these reasons, this disease generates high risks to animal and human health, being a serious public health problem.

An analysis of the documentation of wild animals received by Cetras/IEF from Patos de Minas, MG, Brazil, during the year 2020 was carried out, obtaining data on the origin of animals, release and death rates, permanence in captivity and data on clinical conditions at the arrival. During the period, 1,306 animals were received, 86.9% of which were birds. The most common form of admission was apprehension by competent authority (36.1%), followed by voluntary delivery (33.2%) and collection in urban/rural areas (30.8%). Of the total, 44.3% animals were reintroduced, 39% died, 10% remained at Cetras until the end of the period and 6.7% were destined to other institutions. Injured animals and offspring had a mortality rate of approximately 50%. It is observed that the voluntary delivery has increased and almost equaled the apprehensions. The reintroduction rate is considered satisfactory in relation to similar institutions.

Primary hypoadrenocorticism or Addison’s disease is an endocrinopathy involving glucocorticoid deficiency, commonly associated with mineralocorticoid deficiency. The most commonly used treatment for hormone replacement involves the combination of fludrocortisone and prednisone. Deoxycorticosterone pivalate (DOCP) has been shown in the literature to be superior in electrolyte control in patients with hypoadrenocorticism, and should always be associated with prednisone/prednisolona. In this study, we report the benefit of DOCP and the two-stage dose adjustment protocol for this drug in 2 different cases. There was superior efficacy in electrolyte control and reduction of side effects with the DOCP and prednisolone protocol compared to the use of fludrocortisone in both patients.

The lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) is a large mammal that inhabits forested areas with abundance of water. It is well represented species in zoos and rescue centers and is easily adapted to the artificial environment. The most common veterinary problems in tapirs appear in skin, eye, musculoskeletal system and, to a lesser occurrence, teeth. The objective of this report is to present a case of osteosynthesis in the upper jaw of a seven-year-old male tapir, kept under human care in a zoo, with fracture of the rostral maxillary portion. The methodology of choice for the treatment was interdental fixation with steel wire, for coaptation of the fracture fragments, followed by splinting to stabilize the fracture foci. The diet was modified, to avoid overloading the masticatory force during the bone healing process. After 120 days, the animal underwent a new anesthesia for radiographic evaluation and removal of the osteosynthesis implants, showing good recovery and being incorporated into the group.

After 120 days, the animal underwent a new anesthesia for radiographic evaluation and removal of the osteosynthesis implants, showing good recovery and being incorporated into the group.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87302824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prostatic carcinoma in a cat – case report and literature review 猫前列腺癌1例报告及文献复习
Pub Date : 2022-09-01 DOI: 10.46958/rcv.2022.xxvii.n.160.p.44-56

Prostatic neoplasia in cats is rare and poorly described in the literature. It is not an androgen dependent tumor, and castration does not help in prevention or treatment. Ultrasonographic and radiographic techniques will show urethral or rectal compression in the position of the neoplasm, and for a definitive diagnosis, histopathological examination must be performed. There is no effective therapeutic protocol established, and surgical treatment is not usually effective in controlling the evolution of the condition, since it is malignant, aggressive and has high rates of metastases. The patient in this report is a 10-year-old male, neutered, mixed-breed, short-haired cat, with a history of dyschesia, ribbon-like stools, hematuria and normorexia. The presumptive diagnosis was performed by ultrasound; however, due to the obstructive characteristic presented by the neoplasm, as well as the poor prognosis in relation to the therapeutic alternatives, euthanasia was chosen, and no metastasis was evidenced.

Demodicosis in domestic cats – a review 家猫的蠕虫病研究进展
Pub Date : 2022-07-01 DOI: 10.46958/rcv.2022.xxvii.n.159.p.44-53

Demodicosis is an uncommon disease in the clinical-dermatological routine of felines. It can be caused by the Demodex gatoi or Demodex cati, and a new, as yet unnamed species has been reported. Numerous forms of diagnosis and therapeutic protocols have been reported for canine demodicosis for years. However, there are few current studies on the subject in felines. Therefore, the present work aims to carry out a literature review on this skin disease, with a description of its etiology, epidemiology, clinical signs, diagnosis and current forms of treatment, as feline demodicosis still has a therapeutic and diagnostic difficulty because it is a rare and low-incidence disease. Future studies are still needed to reach a better understand of the disease and to define a more concise therapeutic protocol, including standardization of doses and frequency of administration.
