Waveguide optical isolators suitable for integrated optics are described, which include a nonreciprocal loss isolator and an interferometric one. A surface activated bonding technique is effective for incorporating a magneto-optic effect in a semiconductor waveguide.

The remarkable early success and current explosive growth of electronic integrated circuits (ICs) have fascinated photonics researchers since 1969 with the prospect of similar success in photonic ICs. We will compare the slow progress of photonic integrated circuits with that of electronic ICs.

Simulations of gold/silver vias of different diameters terminating on CdSe are shown to have dipole resonances matched to the bandgap of CdSe. Using simplified models, a threshold carrier concentration required to achieve lasing is estimated.

We performed the time-domain measurement of lasing spectrum in a GaInAsP photonic crystal nanolaser. We observed a very wide wavelength chirping up to 10 nm, which can be explained by a strong TO effect.

We demonstrate the enhancement of optical activity in the terahertz frequency region with metal chiral gratings by photo-excitation of the semiconductor substrate. This result indicates the possibility of the active control of the terahertz polarization.

We present the new scheme of the OSPC. From the waveform calculation, we found the proposed scheme can be operated successively. And also in the analysis of the effect of optical loss on BER, we showed that 2 bit- and 27 bit-operation could be expected for InGaAsP and silica, respectively. From these analytical studies, the operating potential of the proposed OSPC could be confirmed.
