In this paper, the in-orbit receiving environment of a GPS receiver for low/medium altitude satellites is studied and in particular, antenna characteristics of the GPS receiver for various antenna beam directions are examined. In addition, we propose a method to reduce error in calculating the position by reducing the geometric dilution of precision (GDOP). By computer simulations, the relation between the number of visible GPS satellites and GDOP is investigated and the fact that there must exist the most possible GPS satellites in order to reduce GDOP is also confirmed. Besides, since the error factor can be reduced if GDOP becomes smaller can yield the better performance of the GPS receiver. Another simulation result indicates that the heading angle of the GPS receiver antenna must be changed in proportion to the altitude of the receiver in order to obtain better receiving characteristics. The wider receiving range of the antenna can prevent from the situation that the direction of the satellite body must be changed. In this paper, even though we analyze the characteristics for GPS receivers with high inclination angle by computer simulations, we can also characterize the characteristics for GPS receivers with arbitrary inclination angle by considering the earth is a nearly sphere and GPS satellites are uniformly distributed.

This presentation introduces some of the design, deployment, and operation requirements imposed on the embedded systems by the industrial environment, specifically in control and automation. An introduction is offered to typical field devices deployed in industrial automation and the architectures of the associated embedded nodes, as well as technologies used. Connectivity being one of those requirements is discussed in detail, including the integration issues and solutions. Special focus ison the actual implementations of the real-time Ethernet and emerging standards. Security at the field and embedded level arising from the exposure of the field level to the wide area network and the Internet users are presented in some detail. Fault tolerant services and protocols are explored in the context of the safety critical real-time embedded systems and applications. A considerable attention is paid to wireless sensor networks used in industrial automation: specific requirements, architectures, design issues, and protocols are discussed. Programmable platforms are discussed; in this context a need for a generic meta-platform(s) for specific industrial applications in controls and automation is explored. The presentation concludes with an overview of the emerging trends.

Virtualization is used increasingly in data centers to achieve server consolidation. More and more products (commercial and open source) are available; virtualization is even natively included in Linux distributions like in the upcoming Microsoft Windows server. In this paper we present the virtualization tests carried out by EDIT R&D since 2005 to improve the durability of industrial applications running on obsolete hardware platforms. The applications based on the Intelpsilas x86 architecture, and requiring no specific hardware, can be easily virtualized. Thus their lifetime can be extended as long as the virtualization software is adapted to the new hardware of the servers. For applications requiring specific hardware, virtualization is not easy. In this paper we present how to implement the support of a new peripheral, using the open source virtualization software QEMU. We also discuss how the IOs of the drivers are forwarded from the emulated hardware to another hardware that has the same features.

In order to meet the information integration requirement of mechatronics system multi-disciplinary design tools, an ontology-based information integration framework is proposed. This developed integration framework adopts component-based architecture which facilitates the design and simulation applications plug-and-play in the framework Mechatronics System Ontology (MSO) is defined and the standard application component interfaces are specified. MSO includes all the major objects as well as the relationships of the objects in the process of mechatronics systems design and standard component interfaces provide applications a standard way to exchange information based on MSO.

This paper explores the inter-relationships among an airportpsilas performances, its operating characteristics and its nationpsilas logistics industry and economic development by introducing and testing the validity of air cargo supply chain operations reference (ACSCOR) model in the light of Singapore and Hong Kong statistics. Common in both economies, the cargo traffic volume of an airport is found significantly influenced by its operating characteristics and the performances of its airfreight industry. The logistics industry, which provides supporting functions such as water, land connections, etc to airfreight industry, has its overall performance positively correlated with the nationpsilas economic performance. Nonetheless, our study detects the various sectors within the Hong Kong logistics industry is more deeply integrated. As such, Hong Kong benefits more from the strong complementary relationship that exists among her land, sea and air transport sectors.

This paper deal first with artificial neural networks for demand forecasting, neural networks have successfully been used for demand forecasting, however, due to a large number of parameters to be estimated empirically, it is not a simple task to select the appropriate neural network architecture for a demand forecasting problem. Researchers often overlook the effect of neural network parameters on the performance of neural network forecasting. This paper examines the effects of the number of input and hidden nodes and hidden layers as well as the size of the training sample on the in-sample and out-of-sample performance. The second objective of this paper is to describe a new forecasting approach inspired from regression method for weekly demand forecasting, we have used this approach for demand forecasting as a benchmark for comparison. This method performs an extensive search in order to select the appropriate transformation functions of input variables, the weighting factors and the training periods to be used, by taking into consideration the correlation analysis of the selected input variables. With this procedure the best forecasting model is formed.

In the literature, the notion of trust has been widely discussed and various approaches have been proposed to assess and quantify it, in order to take it into consideration when making an interaction-based decision in industrial ecosystems. At the same time, the notion and importance of risk have been widely ignored and not been acknowledged as an important factor to consider, along with trust; while making an interaction-based decision. Although there are approaches in the literature which attempt to quantify risk in the domain of a business interaction in industrial ecosystems, none of them proposes a methodology by which the initiating agent of the interaction can ascertain and determine all the various concepts that are expressed by risk in that domain, and then utilize it to make an informed interaction-based decision. In this paper we present an evaluation of the approaches from the literature and highlight the issues which need to be addressed in order to assist the initiating agent of the interaction in making an informed interaction-based decision with another agent in Industrial ecosystems.

Stewart mechanism is widely used in industry. To study the control of Stewart mechanism, hydraulic Stewart platform was used as plant. Controller was designed according to dynamic model, so local closed-loop control system was to be built. Coefficient matrices of dynamic equation of Stewart platform can only be known by measuring real-time pose of platform and doing real-time calculation, which makes application complicated. Therefore dynamic model was transformed, and one operating point was defined as nominal operating point, where coefficient matrices of dynamic equation were constant. Sliding mode controller was designed with simplified dynamic model, and reaching condition of sliding mode was given in the entire workspace of platform. Hence real-time pose measure is avoided and calculation is reduced. Simulation and experiments show that system performance of trajectory tracking with payload is improved by use of the proposed controller.

The avionics data bus systems of the last four decades were dominated by federated systems. In the European Integrated Project DECOS (Dependable Embedded Components and Systems, partially funded by EC-IST-FP6-511764), in Subproject 6 (SP6) - application demonstrator domain aerospace, the attempt was to develop a new technology approach for an integrated system based on the time-triggered communication architectures. The new technologies in flight control electronics systems selected for the DECOS SP6 test-bench consist of the following: layered time-triggered data bus architectures (LTTP), digital actuator control electronics (ACE), signal processor based motor control electronics (NICE) and a centralized system control unit (SCU) embedded in an integrated modular avionics (IMA) cabinet. These electronics were used to drive two mechanically synchronized rotary actuators with DC brushless motors. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the new technologies implemented in DECOS SP6 with an emphasis on the experiences made and efforts deployed at Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg in developing, manufacturing and integrating all components into a high-lift actuation system test-rig.

Networked control system has many different characteristics compared with the traditional control system, so it is necessary to do some researches on strategies of networked control systems. In order to research in this area, establishing NCS simulation research platform is extremely important. A design scheme of NCS flexible researching platform is proposed, in which a switch and three computers are utilized to constitute a typical NCS, and the implementation of the scheme is completed well. Finally, with a typical second-order system model, some experiments under PID algorithm in different network load are carried out. From the experimental results, feasibility and effectiveness of the scheme of NCS research platform proposed in this paper are verified.
