Facial fractures are a common presentation in equine practice, with management strategies ranging from conservative treatment for stable fractures to surgical intervention for displaced or unstable cases. Resorbable implants present several advantages over conventional metal implants, including a lower risk of infection, elimination of the need for implant removal, and gradual degradation during the healing process. Their application in equine patients has shown promising results in two cases involving low-stress anatomical regions such as the nasal and maxillary bones. Alternative fixation methods, such as titanium plates, provide superior mechanical stability but are associated with a higher risk of implant-related complications. In the future, 3D-printed patient-specific implants may offer a customised approach to fracture repair. The increasing accessibility of 3D printing technology presents new opportunities for preoperative planning and customised implant designs, potentially improving surgical outcomes in select cases.

An 18-year-old Standardbred mare that presented with clinical signs consistent with a subsolar foot abscess in the right hindlimb. Standard foot radiographs were unremarkable. Digital venography of the hoof demonstrated a significant lack of contrast filling in the terminal papilla, circumflex vessel and solar vessels in the region of the medial toe. Findings from the venogram were used to locate the abscess tract and establish drainage. Approximately 3 h after establishing drainage of the subsolar abscess, a second digital venogram was performed. This subsequent venogram revealed near complete resolution of the previously described contrast filling defects. The only deficit noted was a slight decrease in the filling of the terminal papilla in a small area at the medial toe. This case demonstrates the utility of digital venography as a simple, accessible imaging modality available to the field practitioner, providing more accurate lesion identification and localisation, resulting in faster resolution of a subsolar abscess.

Background

There is a concern that performing routine dental floats could result in adverse pregnancy outcomes in mares. There is a paucity of data on the effect of dentistry during pregnancy in domestic species. In women, dental prophylaxis is considered safe during pregnancy.

Objectives

The objective of this study was to determine if routine dental floating was associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes in Thoroughbred broodmares.

Study design

Retrospective records analysis.

Methods

Clinical and farm records from 2013 to 2021 were utilised. Abortion, stillbirth and placentitis were modelled using the SAS GLIMMIX procedure. Time of the dental procedure was categorised in two ways, occurring when the mares were (1) open or pregnant or (2) open, during the first trimester (0–114 days), the second trimester (115–228 days) or the third trimester (>229 days) of pregnancy for separate models for each outcome. Significance was set at p < 0.05.

Results

Both logistic regression models examining abortion found age of the mare at the time of float remained significant, while the trimester of dental procedure, farm and year float performed were not significant. Both logistic regression models examining stillbirth found the age of the mare at the time of float remained significant, with location being significant in the first model (open or pregnant) and a tendency (0.10 > p > 0.05) in the second model (open, first, second or third trimester). Other variables in the models were not significant. Farm remained significant in both logistic models of placentitis, while the age of mare at the time of float, trimester of dental float and year float was performed were not significant.

Main limitations

Not a controlled study.

Conclusions

Floating a mare's teeth during each trimester of pregnancy is a safe procedure.

A 13-year-old Belgian jumping mare was presented with acute onset of severe left forelimb lameness after a jumping competition. Radiographic evaluation showed the presence of periosteal bone formation on the lateral radial eminence, while ultrasonography revealed an injury of the lateral collateral ligament of the elbow associated with severe proliferative synovitis of the humeroradial joint. The rehabilitation program consisted of hand walking for 5 weeks and a progressive increase in the duration of controlled exercise for an additional 16 weeks. Therapeutic ultrasound and pulsed electromagnetic field were also applied. Repeated radiographic and ultrasonographic images after 6 weeks showed a smoother outline and more homogenous radiopacity of the insertional pathology, resolution of the oedema of the soft tissue, and improvement in the joint distension, ligament size and echogenicity. No signs of elbow osteoarthritis were noted. The horse returned to its normal activity 22 weeks after the time of diagnosis. Injuries of the lateral collateral ligament of the elbow are rare and are reported as traumatic and with a poor prognosis. This case demonstrated that a lesion of the lateral collateral ligament of the elbow can result in a favourable prognosis for return to athletic activities.

This case report describes the unusual presentation of an intra-articular solitary osteochondroma in a 7-year-old Warmblood horse associated with fetlock distention and lameness. The osteochondroma was situated at the level of the distal physis of the plantar surface of the third metatarsal (MTIII) bone within the metatarsophalangeal joint and was successfully removed by arthroscopy. The owner reported a good clinical outcome 6 months after surgery, with no visible lameness at walk and trot. To the authors' knowledge, this case report has documented for the first time an intra-articular solitary osteochondroma at the level of the distal physis of the plantar surface of the MTIII bone.
