EFL Teachers’ Perceptions on ICT in English Classroom 英语教师在英语课堂上对信息通信技术的认知

Digital technology has permeated almost every aspect of life. Meanwhile, the responses from the field of language teaching in Indonesia to this new development have been scarce. This study aims to investigate the EFL teachers’ perceptions on ICT in English classrooms. To achieve this aim, a qualitative case study design with a semi-structured interview as the instruments was employed. The participants involved in this research were two English teachers in one of senior high schools in Garut. In conclusion, both participants had a positive perception about the use of ICT in English classrooms. This is indicated by their knowledge of ICT, the kind of ICT, the benefits of ICT, the role of ICT, and how to use it. In addition, they also supported the existence of ICT in English Classroom which is claimed to be helpful. However, they still had barriers in applying ICT in their classroom technically and non-technically

TEACHERS’ PERSPECTIVES ON CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD LANGUAGE LEARNERS 教师对优秀语言学习者特征的看法

The study aim to obtain insight into teachers’ perspectives on characteristics of a good language learners. To fulfill this aim, qualitative method was employed in this study. The study applied a case study research design. The study was conducted in one of a universities in Garut, West Java. The researcher interviewed three lectures in the English education program. The data were collected from materials, tools for recording, participants as the object of the study, and transcription. The data were then analyzed inductive analysis which concerned with the generation of new theory emerging from the data. The inductive approach is a systematic procedure for analyzing qualitative data where the analysis is guided by specific objectives (Thomas, R David, 2003). The result of this study reveals that teachers do have different perspectives according to what they experience themselves. While the characteristics according to several teachers who have been interviewed researchers are students who are active in the language learning process, students who realize that learning language is not easy, students who find strategies to practice using language in the classroom and outside the classroom, students who have good self- image and self-confidence, students who want to make mistakes.

AN ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL CONFLICT IN TOER’S “MIDAH, SIMANIS BERGIGI EMAS” 塔尔市“midah, simanis bergigi emas”中的社会冲突分析

The objective of this study was to find out the significant effect of Task Based Language Teaching towards students’ writing ability. The research method used in this study was quantitative method with the pre-experimental design. The participants of this study were the tenth grade students in one of state vocational high schools in Garut at academic year 2019/2020. One class was chosen as sample of this study. One class was selected as an experimental class which consisted of 30 students. The data were collected through the result of students’ pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using ztable formula. The result showed that zobserved = 13.012 and the significance level of 0,05; zcrirtical = z(0,5-0,05) = z0,450 = 1,65. Therefore, zobserved = 13.012 was greater than zcrirtical = 1,65, so that H0 was rejected and H was accepted. It could be concluded that there was a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension by using Read, Cover, Remember and Retell strategy.
本研究的目的是发现任务型语言教学对学生写作能力的显著影响。本研究采用定量方法和预实验设计。本研究的参与者是2019/2020学年加鲁特一所公立职业高中的十年级学生。本研究选取一个班级作为样本。选取一个班作为实验班,共30名学生。数据通过学生的前测和后测结果收集。采用ztable公式对数据进行分析。结果表明,zobserved = 13.012,显著性水平为0.05;zcritical = z(0,5-0,05) = z0,450 = 1,65。因此,zobserved = 13.012大于zcritical = 1,65,因此H0被拒绝,H被接受。由此可见,阅读、覆盖、记忆和复述策略对学生的阅读理解有显著的影响。

AN ANALYSIS OF CHARACTERS AND CHARACTERIZATION IN WELLS’ THE ISLAND OF Dr. MOREAU 威尔斯《莫罗博士岛》中的人物与人物塑造分析

This paper was entitled “An Analysis of Characters and Characterization in Wells the Island of Dr. Moreau”. This paper discussed of the secondary characters and their characterizations on novel the island of Dr.Moreau which were Moreau itself and his experiments or beast folks. The background of this research was taken because the novel is science fiction. The characters might be representing of future. The depiction of characters and characterizations was the reason of this paper and the development. The object researches problems were the way of the author explained the characters and characterizations, the characters development, and how plotting line assisted the characters and characterizations were developed. The theories were used in this paper; narratology including characters and characterization, and literary works. The aims of this paper the comprehension on literary works and how to find out the signs. The methodology in this paper is used qualitative method and descriptive methodology to interpret the signs. The result of the object research problems the secondary characters were the flat characters. The character of Moreau was the antagonist on this novel, meanwhile the beast folks were tritagonist. The findings were taken by point of view, dialogue, and so on. For further research of this paper, it might be taken of semiotics to get deeper comprehension of characters on this novel.

THE ANALYSIS OF THE QUALITY OF NATIONAL STANDARDIZED SCHOOL SUMMATIVE EXAMINATION OF ENGLISH SUBJECT 2019 2019年全国标准化学校英语总结性考试质量分析

The national standardized school summative examination (USBN) is the test for measuring student competency achievement, it is constructed by Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) about 25% and MGMP Province 75%. However, in improving the quality of the test, it is addition the cognitive dimention of High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) as the standard. The purpose of this study is to prove the quality of the test in terms of item analysis, distribution of hots and consistency of the test. This study was conducted by analyzing the national standardized school summative examination (USBN) 2019 items, answer sheet, key answer and syllabus.The data was collected from archieves in one of Senior High School. The result shows that the item analysis of the test is valid and reliable, the level of difficulty is not balanced, the discriminating power is sufficient, and the effectiveness of distractor is mostly need revision. Moreover, the distribution of hots has pass the limit and the test consistency is satisfactory in criteria of a good test

METACOGNITIVE STRATEGIES IN STUDENT’S READING COMPREHENSION 学生阅读理解中的元认知策略

The aim of this study is to find out the process of using metacognitive strategies applied by introvert student in reading comprehension. This study used qualitative research in terms of descriptive study. In collecting the data, there were two instruments applied; interview, especially semi-interview because it was to find out the problem naturally and not only focus on taking notes during the research and the second instrument was observation. The setting of this study was conducted in outdoor room and the participant was an introvert student of fifteen years old in non-formal education. The study results were the introvert student used metacognitive strategies with three stages in the process of reading, they were planning before reading, monitoring during reading and evaluating after reading, it was removing shortcomings in reading especially in pronunciation and vocabulary, the introvert student thought what she was thinking to maximize her own productivity in reading, she asked herself what she already knew to focus her thinking of reading, and she evaluated what she has carried out in the process of reading, the introvert student fostered forethought and self-reflection in the process of reading so that she became aware of how she learned and evaluated and adapted skills to increase reading comprehension.

THEME AND THEMATIC PROGRESSION OF UNDERGRADUATE THESES 本科毕业论文的主题与主题推进

This research aimed to analyze the theme and the thematic progression in undergraduate students’ theses. To achieve these aims, a qualitative research embracing case study was chosen. The participants of this research were six undergraduate students from academic year 2016, 2017, and 2018 in one of colleges in Garut. The data, students’ theses, were collected by techniques of document study based on theses theme (developing writing skill). The theory of theme by Butt et al (2000) and thematic progression by Bloor and Bloor (2004) was used to analyze the data. The result revealed that undergraduate students mostly used unmarked topical theme and reiteration pattern. It meant that the undergraduate students had tried to persuade the readers to accept their point of view and they had tried to make their text focus by repeating the same element as a theme.

To achieve these aims, a qualitative research embracing case study was chosen. The participants of this research were six undergraduate students from academic year 2016, 2017, and 2018 in one of colleges in Garut. The data, students’ theses, were collected by techniques of document study based on theses theme (developing writing skill). The theory of theme by Butt et al (2000) and thematic progression by Bloor and Bloor (2004) was used to analyze the data. The result revealed that undergraduate students mostly used unmarked topical theme and reiteration pattern. USING PICTURES AS TEACHING MEDIA IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT (A Pre-Experimental Study at one of Junior High School in Garut, West Java, Indonesia) 运用图片作为教学媒介撰写描述性文字(在印度尼西亚西爪哇省加鲁特市某初中的实验前研究)

This research investigated “Using Picture as Teaching Media in Writing Descriptive Text”. It enhanced the ability to write descriptive in one of junior high school in Garut. The purpose of the research was to know the effect of using pictures on students’ writing ability in descriptive text. The research population was the eighth grade students. The researcher used a written test to collect data. The research design was quantitative experimental. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test. The technique used in analyzing the data was t-test formula. It was used to determine whether there was a significance difference between the pre-test and post-test. The result of the test between pre-test and post-test, the mean of pre-test was 59.63 and the mean of post-test was 75.17 The obtained t- test was tobserved = 12.51 and tcritical = 2.0452. The result showed that tobserved greater than tcritical (12.51 > 2.0452). The tobserved was in the area H0 rejected it means H0 was rejected so Ha was accepted. So it can be concluded that using the pictures as teaching media is effective to develop students’ ability in writing descriptive text after being given the treatments. The result of the research was expected to consider teachers to practice the use pictures as teaching media in writing descriptive text. . It would developed students’ writing skill easily.

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO EFL STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ANXIETY 英语学生口语焦虑的成因

Anxiety is one of the most influential factors on students’ learning, especially speaking. English speaking is a language skill that is highly affected by anxiety. Therefore it suggested that the cause of this anxiety be explored to reduce its significant effect on learner. This research aimed at describing contributing factors to EFL students’ speaking. Qualitative inquiry was used as the main framework in completing the analysis. The participants of this research was EFL learners enrolled in English department in a private university in Garut. They were involved based on volunteer participation. Their identity was presented as pseudonym in order to comply with the research ethical conduct. The interviews were used to explore many contributing factors to speaking anxiety experienced by EFL Learners. The result revealed that there are nine dominant factors identified as the cause of students’ speaking anxiety, they are: cognitive and linguistic factors related to classroom procedure, strict and formal classroom environment, classroom presentation, fear of making mistakes and apprehension about others’ evaluation, role of language instructors, linguistic difficulties, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary

AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN TRANSLATING POETRY 分析学生翻译诗歌的困难

This research aimed to find out students’ difficulties in translating poetry and its causes. In conducting the research, qualitative method and descriptive study are used. The data are taken from the students’ work, questionnaire and interview. The research is conducted to 15 third grade students of English Education Program at STKIP Garut. The research result shows that the students faced some difficulties in translating poetry. The students got difficulties in finding equivalent words from the source language into the target language, translating words which function as symbols, translating sentences with figures of speech, and the writing style of poetry which uses ungrammatical structures. Based on the result of the research, the researcher suggests that to translate poetry, the students have to enrich their knowledge about translation and poetry.
本研究旨在了解学生在翻译诗歌时遇到的困难及其原因。研究采用定性研究法和描述性研究法。数据来自学生的作业、问卷和访谈。研究对象是加鲁特STKIP英语教育项目三年级的15名学生。研究结果表明,学生在翻译诗歌时遇到了一些困难。学生们在将源语言中的对等词翻译成目标语言、翻译作为符号的单词、翻译带有比喻的句子以及使用非语法结构的诗歌写作风格方面遇到了困难。根据研究结果,研究人员建议,要翻译诗歌,学生必须丰富翻译和诗歌方面的知识。
