Media processors are instrumental in bridging the gap between computers and consumer electronics. Currently, they are used mainly to enhance the multimedia capabilities of PCs. Shortly, we may also expect to see their application in consumer electronics products that require a high degree of flexibility or interactivity. A typical media processor like the new chip described here’ uses a mixture of concepts from function-specific implementations, DSPs and general purpose processors. It can fulfil a variety of purposes in a ‘multimedia-enhanced’ TV platform. INTRODUCTION Multimedia has been the ‘hottest’ subject in the computer market for the last few years. Graphics, sound, and still and moving pictures greatly enhance users’ appreciation of their PCs. With such multimedia applications, computers enter an area that was formerly the exclusive domain of consumer electronics. In addition to the multimedia experience, the traditional PC assets of interactivity and customization still hold a competitive edge over consumer electronics equipment. On the other hand, the priceperformance ratio of consumer electronics equipment, i.e. the audio and video quality per dollar, is an order of magnitude better than that of current computer-based multimedia solutions. In addition, the robustness and easeof-use of consumer equipment is high. We expect to see a growing number of products that mix typical PC and consumer functions. Examples are interactive set top boxes, cheap network computers, and televisions with Internet browsing capabilities. For these products to be successful, they must offer the best of both worlds, i.e. they should be able to run many different multimedia applications with high quality and at low cost.

With the growing popularity of Internet and Virtual Reality (VR), more and more applications, for example, VRML browsers and 3D graphics network multiplayer games, require 3D graphics capabilities over network. This paper presents a 3D graphics library written in Java to satisfy this requirement. Performance evaluation is especially addressed for further studies in developing 3D graphics applications over network. Furthermore, we have also developed a network library and combined it into the 3D graphics library, so that this library has network capability and others can develop 3D graphics network multiplayer applications based

Symbol timing offset in OFDM systems does not only induce intersymbol interference (ISI) but also causes phase rotation of the signal constellation of the receiver FFT output, which degrades system performance. In this paper, we describe a patent-pending coarse and fine symbol timing recovery algorithm for OFDM systems which, unlike previous algorithms [l-51, does not require carrier synchronization nor supplementary pilot signals for proper operation.

A new algorithm using property restoral approach for adaptive blind equalization of QAM signals is proposed. According to residual intersymbol interference (HI) levels at equalizer output, the proposed algorithm adopts a single-level radius or a multi-level radius to form the error signal to be minimized. Thus, it is possible to reduce the steady-state error and improve the convergence speed of conventional property restoral algorithms. Introduction The property restoral approach is a widely used blind equalization technique. Instead of using the training sequence the property restoral approach identifies an invariant property of the signal of interest and then uses it for adapting an equalizer. However, the performances for steady-state and blind convergence of conventional property restoral algorithms degrade when they are extended to high-order QAM constellations. In this paper, the problems of conventional property restoral algorithms are formulated, and a novel blind equalization technique based on property restoral approach is presented.

Compressed bitstreams are, in general, very sensitive to channel errors. For instance, a single bit error in a coded video bitstream may cause severe degradations on picture quality. Therefore, error concealment is needed at the receiver for picture replenishment. Error concealment algorithms attempt to repair damaged portions of the picture by exploiting the spatial and temporal redundancies in the received and reconstructed video signals. In this paper, we utilize spatially correlated information for error concealment by performing spatial interpolation based on a large local neighborhood of surrounding pixels, and restore image edges that are continuous with those present in the neighborhood. Although other spatial interpolation techniques generate blurring effects, out proposed method has shown no blurring.

A proposed encoder supports NTSC and PAL systems. I n addition, it also permits PALplus standard mode compatible to16.9 wide screen on a 4:3 screen. I n order for this to be realized, vertical and horizontal synchronous timings are fully programmable and the encoder is designed in systolic pipelined architecture with double pixel clock to increase an internal processing speed Also, we have mainly concentrated on cutting down area of the encoder as much as possible. Submodules like letter-box converter, color converter matrix, low pass jilter, interpolator, and color modulator have area saving architectures. The encoder can accept RGB and YCbCr as the input pixel signal type in the speed of 10-1SMpps. Outputs are a Y/C (S-video) signal and a composite signal .We have modeled the encoder in Yerilog-HDL and verified its operation in each mode with C-language based program.
