This paper describes functions and architecture of a VLC ASIC chip specially designed for a parallel processing HDTV video encoder. It is designed to have several operating modes which is very flexible in that it can process in a master or slave sub-picture encoding module of an HDTV encoder, as well as in a standalone encoder for several video input formats according to MPEG-2 MP@ML. The VLC chip is fabricated using 0 . 8 ~ CMOS gate array technology, and runs at 27MHz clock rate.

Personal mobile equipments are often required to be simple, inexpensive, as well as powerful in the same time. We refer to this equipment as Lightweight Intelligent Mobile Equipment (LIME). This paper presents a protocol architecture supporting the Internet access for LIME using the wireless WAN technologies such as GSM (Global System for Mobile communications), or CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data). Each LIME has a service agent located in a server connected to the mobile switching center. The proposed protocol is intended for the handover and data transportation between LIME and the LIME agent. Architectural design of LIME and its agent will also be described.

In this paper, we introduce Korean HDTV transmission system being developed and describe transport stream(TS) remultiplexer and data transport unit architecture which are based on MPEG-2 standard. The remultiplexer performs the function of program clock reference correction and TS packet multiplexing. Also, data transport unit can packetize and combine resource and subscriber management(RSM) data and multiple additional data into a MPEG-2 transport stream.

The standard for digital VCR has some features in common with other standards such as JPEG, MPEG, etc., but adopted a far different scheme for quantization of transformed coefficients [I] . The encoder contains a set of quantizers and selects the best of them for each DCT block. The selection of the quantizer is, therefore, the most important part to increase the coding efficiency. The standard defines several parameters, QNO, CLASS, and AREA, to specify the quantization step size for a coefficient. In this paper, we propose a new method to select a quantizer and compare its performance with that of the conventional method. By using the proposed method, we obtained a significantly improved quality of reconstructed image sequences.

In this paper, we propose a new digital carrier recovery loop architecture for the Grand Alliance (GA) HDTV system. We have developed a n ASIC based on the new architecture. The developed ASIC has the gete count of 60K with a gate array technology that features on 0.5pm, 3.3V and 2metal-layers technology. The pull-in range of the proposed architecture is about k25OKHz with OdB carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR).

This paper presents a new 3D-sound algorithm using the TLA(Table Lookup Architecture). The proposed architecture has the following advantages over the existing architectures[ 11. 1) programmable by changing the contents of the lookup table. 2) scaleable via table size for cost and fidelity. In particular, the low-cost implementation is proposed to target consumer multimedia applications such as TV, PC, and Audio Systems.
