Kaempferia galanga L . is one of the plants in Zingiberaceae family. It is used by people in many regions of Asia and Africa for relieving toothache, abdominal pain, muscular swelling and rheumatism. Tyrosinase is a key enzyme for melanogenesis, and hyperpigmentation is associated with abnomal accumulation of melanin pigment. This study aimed to investigate the inhibition of melanogenesis by hexane extract of Kaempferia galanga L. (HKG) in B16F10 melanoma cells. Cell-free tyrosinase, melanin contents, intracellular tyrosinase activity and western blot analysis were performed to elucidate the effects on anti-melanogenesis. Cytotoxicity of the extracts was measured using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and determined the concentration of 12.5, 25 ㎍/ml. HKG significantly inhibited to activities of intracellular tyrosinase and melanin synthesis in the absence or presence of α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) with dose-dependent manner. And HKG inhibited the expression of tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TRP-1) and tyrosinase-related protein 2 (TRP-2), regardless of the presence or absence of α-MSH. HKG also down–regulated phosphorylation of p38 and JNK, and up–regulated phosphorylation of Akt. These effects were not related to its cytotoxicity action. These results indicate that HKG has the potential to be a useful therapeutic agent for treating hyperpigmentation disorders and as a beneficial additive in whitening agents in cosmetics industry.

태음인의 辛丑本 新定方 처방과 약재는 甲午本과 辛丑本을 거 치면서 表病과 裏病의 구분을 비롯한 생리, 병리의 인식과 병증 적 용에 있어서 많은 변화가 있었으며, 辛丑本에서도 주치증이 생략된 처방이 있어 辛丑本만으로는 모든 처방들의 病證論적 근거를 밝히 기가 어렵다. 辛丑本의 病證 분류도 사상의학 연구자에 따라 분류 기준이나 연구 의도에 따라 다르게 구분되어 다양한 각도의 체계적 인 연구가 필요하다1-6). 사상의학에서는 병증을 기존 證治醫學과는 달리 陰陽虛實로 논하지 않고 각 체질의 保命之主가 어떤 상황에 처하느냐에 따라 升降緩束에 따라 논한 것이 기존 證治醫學의 八綱辨證, 氣血辨證, 臟腑辨證의 개념과 두드러진 차이점이라고 볼 수 있다7). 東醫壽世保元의 처방과 약재에 관한 연구는 東醫壽世保元 新 定方과 東醫四象新編을 비교한 연구8), 東醫壽世保元과 藥徵을 비 교한 연구9), 기존의학의 歸經, 性味, 效能을 사상의학적으로 재해 석한 연구10,11), 傷寒論과 金匱要略과의 비교를 통한 연구12), 八綱 의 개념에서 사상의학 처방을 분석한 연구13) 등 다수가 있으나 사 상의학적 생리, 병리를 고려한 관점에서의 연구는 비교적 적은 편 이다. 또한 東醫四象新編을 비롯한 사상의학 처방 서적은 이제마가 저술한 서적과는 달리 四象醫學의 證治醫學的 응용을 위해 실용성 과 활용성에 중심을 두어 편찬되어 四象體質 病證 運用精神과는 차이가 있다14). 이제마의 저서로는 北韓 保健省 간행 東武遺稿, 藏書閣 所藏 東武遺稿, 格致藁, 東醫壽世保元四象草本卷(이하 草本卷), 東醫壽 世保元 甲午本(이하 甲午本), 東醫壽世保元 辛丑本(이하 辛丑本)이 있으나 처방과 약재에 관한 내용은 北韓 保健省 東武遺稿, 草本卷, 甲午本, 辛丑本의 네 서적에 주로 기재되어 있다15-17). 본 연구에서 는 이제마가 저술한 네 서적에서 태음인의 생리, 병리, 병증, 처방 에 관한 내용을 수집, 정리, 요약, 분석하여 태음인의 처방을 사상 의학적으로 설명하고자 시도하여 병리와 처방에 관한 내용을 정리 하여 보고하는 바이다. 태음인 처방의 사상의학적 병리 연구

Amomum cadamomum Linne (ACL) has long been utilized against the inhibited qi movement related diseases such as dyspepsia, acute gastroenteritis, vomiting and diarrhea in Korean medicine. We speculated that ACL could improve the metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes through removing the phlegm-dampness and promoting the qi movement or stagnation. This study was designed to investigate effects and molecular mechanisms of ACL extract on the improvement of adipocyte dysfunction induced by TNF-α in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Potential roles of ACL extract in the lipogenesis, inhibition of inflammatory cytokines and insulin resistance, were investigated in this study. Also, we examined the adipose genes and signaling molecules related to insulin resistance and glucose uptake to elucidate its mechanism. Our data demonstrated that TNF-α significantly incresed the release of lipid droplets and the production of MCP-1 and IL-6 from adipocytes. In gene expression, TNF-α reduced the expression of aP2, PPARγ, C/EBPα, GLUT4, and IRS-1 related to lipogenesis and insulin sesitivity, while TNF-α increased the expression of MCP-1 related to inflammation. In addition, TNF-α down-regulated the PPARγ and IRS-1 protein and up-regulated the IRS-1 Ser307 phosphorylation. These alterations induced by TNF-α were prevented by the treatment of ACL extract. Thus, our results indicate that ACL extract can be used to prevent from the TNF-α-induced adipocyte dysfunction through insulin and PPARγ pathways.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(MBTI) personality type and academic achievement of Korean medical students. A total of 97 (57 men, 40 women; ages 24 to 36) fourth-year Korean medical students participated in this study. The MBTI questionnaire was administered to all the students for identification of their personality type and academic performance. The results are as follows. First, the proportions of Personality type of Korean medical students were Extroversion (E) 33.0% - Introversion (I) 67.0%, Sensing (S) 70.1%- Intuition (N) 29.9%, Thinking (T) 58.8%- Feeling (F) 41.2%, and Judging (J) 54.6% - Perceiving (P) 45.3%. Second, the most common personality type was ISTJ (22.7%), followed by ISTP (13.4%), ISFJ (12.3%). Third, according to the analysis of this study, academic achievement was significantly related with their personality type in the preference : Sensing (S) - Intuition (N) and Judging (J)-Perceiving (P). In analysis of Sensing (S) - Intuition (N) and Judging (J)-Perceiving (P) index, Sensing (S) and Judging (J) type students had higher academic achievement than Intuition (N) and Perceiving (P) type students. This is the study to identify the characteristics of MBTI in Korean Medical students. The findings indicate that academic achievement was significantly related to their personality type in the preference. Using the results of MBTI in Korean medical students, is helpful in selection of appropriate teaching and learning strategies to provide better education.
