The purpose of this study was to understand how vegetarian diets in Taiwanese hospitals are well established and provide suggestion for successful implementation in Korea. Micro-ethnographic case study with in-depth interviews, field observations, and paper reviews were used for this study. Experiences of doctors and nutritionists from Taiwanese hospitals where deliver vegetarian hospital diets were analyzed. This research found out Taiwanese life respect culture has influence on introducing vegetarian diets in hospital, besides most Participants agreed to use vegetarian diets for the medical purpose according to their clinic experiences and research results. Meanwhile there is no restriction to compel patients to keep vegetarian diets. All participants answered food has a large effect on the human body and further study on vegetarian diets’ efficacy is required. The hospital chief’s decision making is crucial to introduce vegetarian diets in hospitals. For the bigger picture, social supports, organizational supports and national policy supports are all important factors for it. The implications and recommendations for Korean hospitals were discussed. The public awareness for vegetarian diet for medical purpose along with research on its efficacy would be needed. In order to make good use of a vegetarian diet for medical purposes, we first need to build a vegetarian-friendly environment, go deep into the study of a diet’s effects using diverse methodologies, and combine the diet with traditional medicine theory. Adipocytes are endocrine cells that release bioactive mediators called adipokines. In condition of obesity characterized by low-grade chronic inflammation, adipocytes release inflammatory adipokines, which is related to insulin resistance. Bojungchiseub-tang (BJCST) has been used in symptoms and signs of edema, dampness-phlegm, kidney failure, and so on in Korean medicine. BJCST is also expected to have anti-obesity activities. In the present study, we examined whether BJCST modulate the production of inflammatory adipokines and the activations of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathway related to induce adipocyte inflammation to elucidate the effects and its mechanism of BJCST on lowering the content of inflammatory adipokines in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. As a result, BJCST suppressed the production of proinflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) -α, interleukin (IL) -1β, IL-6, interferon (IFN) -γ, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and the production of other inflammatory mediators, prostaglandin E2(PGE2) and nitric oxide(NO)viadownregulationofcyclooxygenase-2(COX-2)andinducible NO synthase (iNOS) gene expressions. In addition, BJCST decreased the phosphorylation of MAPK that promotes the production of inflammatory adipokines in 3T3-L1 mature adipocytes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the protective effects of Yukmijiwhang-tang(YM) water extracts against the UVB irradiation on the human keratinocyte HaCaT cells. We observed the effects of YM on the oxidative stress, gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine such as TNF-α and IL-1β, and matrix metalloproteinase-9 in UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells. On the effects of oxidative stress and antioxidant function on the treatment with YM, The activity of xanthine oxidase(XO) was significantly decreased by treatment of YM in all the concentrations(p<0.01). The activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and catalase(CAT) was significantly increased by treatment of YM in a dose dependent manner(p<0.05 and p<0.01). DPPH radical was erased by treatment of YM under dose of 500 μg/ml concentration. Treatment of HaCaT cells with YM had also significantly reduced intracellular ROS produced by UVB irradiation in a dose dependent manner(p<0.05, p<0.01, p<0.001). Gelatin zymography assay showed that YM downregulated the MMP-9 activity in UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells. RT-PCR analysis revealed that YM suppressed the expression of IL-1β and MMP-9 however, it has no effects on the expression of TNF-α and MMP-3. The object of this study was to observe the effect of Banhasasim-tang (BHSST) on the HCl/EtOH-induced gastric ulcer in mice. Three different dosages of BHSST extract (400, 200 and 100 ㎎/㎏) were once orally administered 1 hr before HCl/EtOH mixture treatment. One hour after HCl/EtOH mixture single oral treatment, the changes on the gross hemorrhagic lesion scores, fundic histopathology, gastric nitrate/nitrite contents, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense system (catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities) were observed, and compared with that of ranitidine 100 ㎎/㎏. As results of all three different dosages of BHSST extract treatment in the HCl/EtOH-induced gastric ulcer mice, significant and dose-dependent decreased gastric damages. BHSST extracts also increased gastric nitrate/nitrite contents and strengthened the antioxidant defense systems, and increased the activities of catalase and SOD, respectively. BHSST extracts 200 ㎎/㎏ showed similar anti-ulcerative effect as compared with ranitidine 100 ㎎/㎏, in this experiment. BHSST has favorable protective effects against to the HCl/EtOH-induced gastric damages, through the strengthening of the body antioxidant defense systems. These gastroprotective effects of BHSST against HCl/EtOH-induced gastric ulcer considered as results of complicated synergic effects of their 8 kinds of herbal components, but exact synergic or individual herbal effects are difficult to discuss in this study. Therefore, more detail synergic effects between 8 kinds of individual herbal component of BHSST should be tested with screening of active anti-inflammatory chemical ingredients, in future.

This study was aimed to obtain epidemiological information of cancer patients treated with Oriental medicine. 58 breast and gynecological cancer patients treated in Cancer Center of Daeguhanny Oriental Hospital from August 2012 to August 2013 were reviewed. Careful investigations were done by categorizing these patients by their origin, stage, treatment, conventional treatment type, chief complaint, etc. In tumor origin, breast cancer showed the largest proportion in total patients(74.1%) and inpatients(81.8%). 63.8% of the patients' tumors were stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ. 48.3% of patients visited Oriental hospital for combination treatment with conventional medicine. 91.4% of the patients have under 5 years of cancer duration. Their cheif complaints are general weakness, postoperative pain and abdominal discomfort in general. This study presented the characteristics of breast and gynecological cancer patients treated by Oriental medical therapies, and thus would be valuable for futher studies of Oriental medical cancer treatments.

Commelina communis Ledeb is a widely used medication for the treatment of antidiabetic, antioxidant and hypoglycemic agent in Korea. Alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) is a major factor to stimulate melanin synthesis in the skin. The purposes of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effects of extract from Commelina communis Ledeb (ECC) on α-MSH-stimulated melanogenesis in B16F10 cells. ECC suppressed melanin synthesis and intracellular tyrosinase activity in B16F10 cells or α-MSH-induced B16F10 cells in a dose dependent manner. In study on the melanogenic protein expressions, it had especially influence on expressions of tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related protein (TRP-1). Tyrosinase and TRP-1 expressions were gradually decreased in a dose-dependent. Additionally, the extract also decreased the α-MSH-induced over-expression of tyrosinase and TRP-1. This results show that the anti-melanogenic activity of ECC is correlated with the suppression of tyrosinase and TRP-1 protein expressions in B16F10 cells.

This study investegated the effect of Liriope platyphylla (LP) on allergic reactions and its mechanism of action. We investigated the effect of LP on Evans Blue (EB) extravasation induced by anti-dinitrophenyl (DNP)-IgE in rats. We tested whether the ethanol extract of LP reduced ear skin thickness and historical changes induced by topical application of 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) to ears of mice. We evaluated compound 48/80-induced release of histamine in rats peritoneal mast cell (RPMCs). We also investigated the regulatory effect of LP on the level of inflammatory mediators in PMACI-induced human mast cell (HMC-1); cytokine IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α in HMC-1, MAPKs (ERK, JNK and p38) in HMC-1. The ethanol extract of LP (81.3 mg/100 g body weight) significantly inhibited the PCA reaction compared with the control (P < 0.05). However, LP did not prevent topical applications of DNFB-induced ear skin thickening and histological changes. In RPMCs, histamine release induced by compound 48/80 was significantly attenuated by LP at 100 μg/ml (P < 0.05). LP extract (100 μg/ml) significantly reduced the PMACI-induced IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α secretion via inhibition of ERK phosphorylation in HMC-1. In conclusion, the ethanol extract of LP inhibited mast cell-derived, immediate-type allergic reactions, and the result suggest the potential of LP for preventing allergic inflammatory disorders.
