AbstractOnline learning is the alternative solution to carry out the teaching and learning during the pandemic of Covid-19 since the schools in all level are closed. As the number of English online learning practices carried out in Indonesia, there have been numerous barriers faced by the EFL teachers. One of the challenges faced by the EFL teacher is the students’ lack of motivation since the learning process is considered not interesting. Hence, it is paramount to identify the kinds of learning media such as digital platforms and learning applications that accommodate the students’ multiple intelligence. This study implements a literature review by collecting the data from various relevant literature and analyzing qualitatively. The result of this study shows the kinds of learning application as the media to accommodate the students’ multiple intelligence types. Moreover, the result of this study is expected to be a reference for EFL teachers to select and initiate learning media based on the students’ multiple intelligence. Thus the students get motivation in online learning especially in the current situation. Keywords:multiple intelligence, media, motivation

The prior and recent literature on the second and foreign language education has touched upon a number of discussion regarding Critical Pedagogy (CP). CP is generally defined as an approach to teaching and curriculum that seeks to understand and the historical and socio-political context of schooling and pedagogical practices that aim not only to change the schooling, but also the wider society. This case study aimed to investigate the perspective of teachers towards CP in an Indonesian higher education in order to see the possibilities and the challenges of applying CP in this particular context. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data to five teachers, and the data was analysed using a thematic analysis. The result of this study revealed that while some of the teachers were in favour of implementing CP, the others seemed to be rather pessimistic due to some constraints they had in the classroom. Some strategies, e.g. problem posing techniques were found to be essential to engage the students in critical dialogue with the teachers. It is hoped that this research can shed new light on to what extent CP can be implemented in certain educational contexts and on possible challenges that teachers may face in the process.

The purpose of this study aimed at investigating is to investigate English learning strategies used by fifth grade students of a private school in Yogyakarta in learning English online during pandemic during pandemic period. The research used mixed methods design with forty-one student respondents to the learning strategy questionnaire for quantitative data. Two students were interviewed for qualitative data. The quantitative data from questionnaire was analyzed using descriptive statistic, while the interviews was analyzed using the thematic analysis. The results show that first; first, memory strategy is the type of learning strategies often used by the students under category direct strategies (66.66%), while under indirect category, the respondents applied social strategy most (87.79%). Second, the students have a greater demand to apply direct strategies than indirect one, with percentage as much 23.57% and 14.08% consecutively. Of the two learning strategies, direct and indirect strategies, the learning strategy that is in great demand by fifth grade students is indirect strategies (23.57%) compared to direct strategies (14.08%). The results of the interview showed that the most of the fifth-grade students used writing strategies in the form of sentences in learning English, so that they could easily remember new vocabulary (memory strategies); listening to English music to help students learn English (cognitive strategies); and asking people who are fluent in English when they have difficulty or don't understand English material (social strategies).

AbstractThe purpose of this research was to find out whether the use of story mapping technique is effective or not in improving students’ reading comprehension on the narrative text at Senior High Schools in Luwu Utara. This research applied pre-experimental design. The population of this research was the tenth grade students SMAN 3 Luwu Utara. The samples of this research were 10 students. The sampling technique in this research was purposive sampling. The instrument of this research was reading test of narrative texts. The researcher gave pretest and posttest to the students. SPSS 20 was used to analyze the data. The result of this research showed that the use of story mapping technique in in improving students’ reading comprehension is effective. It proved by the result of the data indicated that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test. The mean score in the pre-test was 47.80 and the mean score in the post-test was 81.40. The value of t0 (ttest) = 8.297, the value of tt (ttable) = 2.262 at the level of significance is 5% (0,05) with degree of freedom (df) = 9. Based on the result namely 8.297> 2,262 or t0 (ttest) was higher than tt (ttable), t0 > tt, it means that the story mapping technique is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension on the narrative text at Senior High School No. 3 in Luwu Utara. Critical thinking is a skill that should be developed to enable students cope with 21st century challenges. Critical Listening class is one of the compulsory subjects in English Language Education Study Program of Mercu Buana University Yogyakarta which goal is to enhance students critical thinking whenever they listen to particular information. However, the instrument to measure the students’ critical listening skill has not been developed yet. Therefore, this study aims at developing an instrument to develop students’ critical listening skill. The study was started by developing the conceptual definition and operational definition of critical thinking and critical listening. Afterwards, a set of instrument containing of 40 items were developed. Identifying instrument content validity is the first step the focus of this study. The instrument items were then validated by 3 experts. The result of this study showed that 30 items on the instrument was considered valid as they had I-CVI ranged from 0,8-1. The other 10 items were deemed to be invalid since the I-CVI is lower than 0,78. The result of this study encouraged the researcher to revise the instrument and improve the validity of the items.

This research aims to map out teachers‟ beliefs about, perceptions of, and classroompractices emphasizing English as the medium instruction towards STEM education. Thisstudy addresses the following research questions: (1) what are teachers‟ beliefs on applyingEnglish as the medium instruction through STEM subjects in elementary school? (2) Howdoes English as medium instruction impacts STEM subjects for elementary school? (3)What do teachers identify as challenges and barriers to use English as medium instructionin teaching STEM subjects? Moreover, this research determined as the first step to designpre-service teacher to teach STEM disciplines subjects emphasizing English as the mediuminstruction. A multi-case case study was conducted with two elementary school teachers. These two teachers were purposefully selected from a Cambridge Standard School torepresent science, mathematics, and as English teachers as well. Data collection consists ofdocument analysis, classroom observations, and interviews. Triangulation was used tovalidate the data. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Findingsfrom the case studies are (1) teachers‟ beliefs influence their professional coursework, classroom practices, and how they perceived future education, (2) as the medium ofinstruction changes the classroom gets more interactive and students have fun in learning,(3) new vocabularies that students have not known and matched approach were two bigbarriers for teachers.

This paper proposes lesson study as a model for improving pedagogical skill especially in teaching English for Public Speaking. The lesson study has three steps. Those are plan, do, and see. In a small group, several lecturers design the material and the methods. One lecturer is being a class lecturer of English for Public Speaking, the rest of them are being observers. The class lecturer explains about the lesson plan. The rest of them give comment and suggestion. The class lecturer apply the lesson plan which has revised to the students. The observers observe students‟ responds. After the class has finished, the class lecturer and the observers discuss their progress. They evaluate the class activity and make the next lesson plan. It shows that lesson study help the students to increase their understanding of English for Public Speaking. The lesson plan also give insight to class lecturer and the observers.
