Burnt-Bricks Production Using Extracted Finer Particles from Soil with Fly Ash Addition 粉煤灰加土提取细颗粒生产烧结砖

Earthen building materials, including mud, adobe, rammed earth, and bricks, have a long history of use in civil engineering construction all throughout the world. Burnt bricks are one of these materials thatis important. However, the availabilityof raw materials for making bricks is limited. As a result, numerous alternatives have been investigated as raw materials for making bricks. These substitutes include fly ash, rice husk and ash, industrial, and agricultural waste. The current study suggests a novel method for producing burnt bricks using extracted finer and fly ash.Finer particle extraction was done through soil washing. Since the extracted finer is having high plasticity index and high linear shrinkage, extracted finer was mixed with 20%, 25%, 30%, 40% and 50% fly ash. Fly ash is an industrial waste; hence the use of fly ash for this kind of production would give a sustainable solution for waste management. Every finer-fly ash combination underwent an Atterburg test to evaluate its qualities, particularly its plasticity index and linear shrinkage. Standard-type mold (220 x 115 x 75 mm) was used to producethe handmade bricks. Compressive strength, flexural strength, water absorption, density, and dimension variations of burned bricks were all examined. Results were compared with SLS 39: Specification for burnt clay bricks. Further, these properties were compared with the same properties of bricks made with soil taken from the brick-making industry mixed with fly ash and industrial available burnt-bricks.Additionally, wire-cut bricks were produced using extractedfiner and 25% fly ash. The dimensional variationof finer-fly ash mixed burnt bricks is decreasing when the fly ash % is increased relative to the mold size. Compressive strength of the Grade 2 category was demonstrated using bricks manufactured with a 25% fly addition, according to SLS 39. According to the aforementioned findings, burnt bricks composed of extractedfiner and fly ash have higher desirable qualities when 25% more fly ash is added. Additionally, it shows that using fly ash results in lightweight bricks.The wire-cut bricks made with this selected mixture give 10.64 N/mm2 of compressive strength and it satisfies the SLS 39 requirements for wire-cut bricks. Also, its water absorption was nearly 16% which is below the SLS required value (18%).

Sustainable Client-Driven Marketing Strategies of Quantity Surveying Firms in the Built Environment 建筑环境中工料测量公司的可持续客户驱动营销策略

Marketing strategy had been understood to mean the way and manner in which a firm create and achieve a profitable customer relationship in a competitive environment. However, not all strategies could capture the attention of clients in such a competitive business environment. Therefore, this study seeks to identify marketing strategies that drive clients in engaging the services of quantity surveying firms for the sustainability of the firms in the built environment. The opinions of 46registered quantity surveying firms in Lagos, Oyo and Ondo States on the usage and effectiveness of sustainable customer-driven marketing strategies were obtained through a well-structured questionnaire. The surveyed respondents’ quantity surveying firms were randomly sampled in the selected locations. Mean Response Analysis (MRA) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the data collected. Findings show that professional-client relationship (MS=4.13) is the most frequently used (MS=4.17) and effective (MS=4.13) marketing strategy that drives clients and sustains the quantity surveying firms. This is closely followed by follow-up and expanding service to existing clients. Furthermore, the view of the respondents on the effectiveness of professional-client relationship (p-value=0.104) and follow-up (p-value=0.157) marketing strategies were the same at P>0.05. However, a significant difference existed in the view of respondents on one marketing strategy i.e. expanding service to existing clients (p-value=0.019). The study concluded that professional-client relationship and follow-up are the strategies that drive the attention of the clients mostly in the study area; this increases the chances of firms’ sustainability in the built environment. The implication of this is that quantity surveying firms will much more survive in the competitive environment using these highly effective sustainable client-driven marketing strategies.

Readiness of Malaysian on Sustainable Development in Solar Energy Application 马来西亚在太阳能应用可持续发展方面的准备情况

Solar energy is a non-vanishing renewable source of energy that is eco-friendly. However, the solar energy adoption rate in Malaysia remains low due to the low readiness level among the Malaysian. This phenomenon should be emphasized where solutions need to be figured out to encourage the adoption of solar energy in buildings. Thus, this research was conducted to explore the readiness and challenges of the Malaysians in adopting solar energy. A mixed research method was adopted where a totalof 200 sets of online questionnaire surveys were distributed to the public, and a semi-structured interview was carried out to obtain the opinions from the expert in the industry. Based on the findings of the questionnaires, the top 3 challenges in solar energy adoption are (1) high setting up cost of solar panels, (2) limited public awareness of solar energy and (3) efficiency of the solar panel depends on the weather. Next, the qualitative study found that 48.9% of 139 respondents were willing to adopt solar energy in the future. The findings show that that breaking down the barriers of high investment cost and long return investment would further enhance the solar energy adoption rates at the residential scale. Since this study had explored the challenges and solution to these barriers, the outcomes of this study can be used by the policy maker as the fundamental to encourage the adoption of solar energy in the existing buildings where the current adoption rate is low.

Comparative Evaluation of the Engineering Properties of Asphaltic Concrete from Selected Asphalt Plants in Southwestern Nigeria for Road Construction 尼日利亚西南部公路建设中选定沥青厂沥青混凝土工程性能比较评价

In this study, the engineering properties of asphaltic concrete from selected asphalt plants in Southwestern Nigeria for road construction were sampled for three months, analysed and compared with regulatory body specifications. The penetration test, Ductility test, Marshall Stability and flow tests results indicated good conformity to the regulatory specificationby all the plants with JBN exhibiting highest range value while LSPWC has the least. Also, asphalt samples from all the plants passed the Ring ball and softening point test with Julius Berger Nigeria having highest value between 53.5-53.7 while SEQUOIA has the least with 50-50.2 when compared to standard value 47-56. For bitumen content tests with 5-8% Specification, ESPRO failed with 3.9-4.8, LSPWC show inconsistence result of 3.9-5.6, SEQUOIA had the highest between 6.4-7.0, while CCECC and JBN conform to specification. The density-void ratio and particle size specification were met by only JBN with major deviation recorded from LSPWC. The result indicated JBN is the only company that satisfy all the engineering properties specification while others exhibit inconsistency in aggregates proportion thereby making the asphalt concrete a possible cause for pavement failure in Southwest Nigeria.

The penetration test, Ductility test, Marshall Stability and flow tests results indicated good conformity to the regulatory specificationby all the plants with JBN exhibiting highest range value while LSPWC has the least. Also, asphalt samples from all the plants passed the Ring ball and softening point test with Julius Berger Nigeria having highest value between 53.5-53.7 while SEQUOIA has the least with 50-50.2 when compared to standard value 47-56. For bitumen content tests with 5-8% Specification, ESPRO failed with 3.9-4.8, LSPWC show inconsistence result of 3.9-5.6, SEQUOIA had the highest between 6.4-7.0, while CCECC and JBN conform to specification. The density-void ratio and particle size specification were met by only JBN with major deviation recorded from LSPWC. Curing Condition and NaOH Concentration on the Mechanical Properties of Fly Ash Based Geopolymer Mortars 养护条件和NaOH浓度对粉煤灰基地聚合物砂浆力学性能的影响

This paper describes the effect of different curing conditions on the mechanical properties of fly ash-based geopolymer mortars activated by different NaOH solution molarity. The influence of different curing initial curing temperatures (40°C,50°C,60°C), initial curing time (4h,8h,12h), and NaOH solution concentration (8mol, 10mol, 12mol) was studied by orthogonal design and the single-variable method.Results indicated thatthe fluidity of the geopolymer mortar sample followed the opposite trend with NaOH molarity increase. The most sensitive factor is NaOH molarity without considering curing age based on the data from orthogonal experiments. Furthermore, the study revealed a tendency to increase the flexural and compressive strength with rising NaOH concentration, initial curing temperature, and time, despite the mechanical strength development speed at different ages beingvarious,and the optimum NaOH molarity may be 10mol while NaOH pellets dosage and CO2emission were considered.

The dramatic increase in urban population has led to rapid infrastructure development worldwide and the construction industry has become one of the most progressive sectors in the world today. As a result, the construction process and its related stages play a significant role in the environment's impact, both directly (via resource and energy consumption as well as the production of contamination and waste) and indirectly (through intense pressure on inadequate infrastructures). Consequently, there is a global drive to develop “environmental-friendly and sustainable, “green” and carbon reducing buildings”. Implementing sustainability can improve the quality of our life, granting us a healthy life and promoting economic, social, and environmental circumstances. The optimal selection of sustainable building materials is acknowledged as the most fundamental way for designers to apply sustainability principles to construction projects. This Paper provides a comprehensive literature review for sustainability maximization through the material selection process. The paper performs an analysis of the previous studies related to sustainable material selectionto identify the critical factors and knowledge gaps that should be considered in the material selection process. Finally, the paper concludes that the current literature in the building domain lacks a standard method that could help decision-makers selectthe appropriate materials by considering all factors that arise in the decision-making process to maximize sustainability in buildings. Furthermore, a need exists to fill the gap between designers and decision-makers in the sustainable construction industry for improving the selection process of sustainable building materials while at the same time looking at the accomplishment of environmental goals and meeting design and budget requirements
