The metallothionein levels of the carps in the river of Yamanashi Prefecture were measured as an environmental pollution biomarker. The carps(n=70)were caught in 4 places during 1999~2001. Concentrations of metallothionein and heavy metals(Cd, Hg, Zn, Cu, V, Mn)in the hepatopancreas were measured. The mean value of metallothionein level of the carp captured in the each sampling station could not recognize the difference. However, it was shown that the metallothionein had been induced in the part of the carp. In addition, positive correlation between metallothionein level and Cu level in the hepatopancreas was recognized.(r=0.80, p<0.001).As a result of the metal analysis of the metallothionein using HPLC/ICP-MS, the Cu has mainly combined with the metallothionein. These results show that the metallothionein of carp in the river of Yamanashi Prefecture was induced by Cu.

The long term impact of successive municipal solid waste compost(MSWC)amendments on soil was investigated using physico-chemical analyses, soil microbial activity characterization and direct solid-phase bioassays. Unvegetated soil plots had been yearly amended with different amounts of Tunisian MSWC and conventional farm manure(FM) for four consecutive years. Despite the changes in physico-chemical properties of organically amended soils, neither the amendment type nor the incorporated amount had significant effects on soil ecotoxicity, microbial growth and enzymatic activities at long-term.

The inhibitory effects of various insecticides and their derivatives on acetylcholinesterase(AChE)purified from the body muscle homogenate of Koi carp(Cyprinus carpio)were examined in vitro. The p(IC50), negative logarithm of inhibitor concentration(M)required for 50% inhibition, of individual chemicals was estimated to be 3.2-8.2 and 5.4-6.1 for the organophosphates and carbamates tested, respectively. Of the 35 chemicals examined, isoxathion oxon was the most potent inhibitor as shown by p(IC50)of 8.2, and oxono organophospate compounds(with P=O)were hundreds to thousands times more inhibitory than their thiono analogues(with P=S). Azinphos, chloropyrifos, paraoxon and parathion in the form of diethyl ester were slightly more inhibitory than their dimethyl analogues, respectively. Effects of combination of different insecticides were also examined, and various combinations tested showed an additive inhibitory effect.
