A 13 GHz Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) employing a parametric divider is being developed for volume production of microwave and millimeter wave applications. This PLL is realized using a mixed technology of pHEMT MMICs and SMT components to insure a cost effective, microwave multi-chip assembly solution. The fundamental PLL frequency of 13 GHz can be used as a very stable oscillator source for a number of applications, including point-to-point systems, 38 GHz radio band, 65 GHz broadband network and 77 GHz automotive applications by means of successive multipliers.

This paper presents a general method for analytically evaluating the gradients of cost-functions of microwave structures analyzed by the Finite Element Method (FEM). Conventional optimizers require a finite difference scheme to find the gradients of the cost function and thus two calculations per optimization parameter. The method described in this paper shows that the gradients can be evaluated analytically (exactly) from a single analysis run of the structure. Numerical results are presented for 2D microwave structures and compared with conventional finite differencing. Excellent agreement is found. The method can easily be extended to 3D problems with arbitrarily shaped mesh-simplexes and higher-order vector interpolation functions.

This paper describes a low cost and simple design method for feedforward linear power amplifier. The adaptive control techniques are employed in loop I to cancel carrier and extract error signal. In the loop II, the lookup table method of temperature correction is utilized for ensuring third-order intermodulation products (IMD/sub 3/) cancellation. The achievement has been realized in 460 MHz multicarrier power amplifier and CDMA base station power amplifier. The two-tone (IMD/sub 3/) are less than 62 dBc and the operation bandwidth is more than 20 MHz at 460 MHz. The ACPR of CDMA power amplifier is better than 40 dBc.

An improvement of a quasi-optical frequency doubler based on crossed dipoles is proposed. The directivity of the dipole antenna is increased by adding parasitic elements similar to the Yagi-Uda approach. Layout and promising measured results of a structure with one reflector are presented and further steps for possible improvements suggested.

An original generalized admittance matrix (GAM) approach for the analysis of multiport junctions in rectangular waveguide having an arbitrary circular-rod inset is presented. The method is based on an efficient computation of the GAM for the blocks that compose the structure. The accuracy and efficiency of the method developed has been assessed by comparing the results obtained with some measured data and with data obtained by FEM.

In this paper we describe triple mode filters in a square waveguide with integrated coaxial input/output excitation. An important feature of the structure proposed is that it is easily amenable to an accurate full wave analysis. In addition to theory, a practical six pole filter with two transmission zeros is also demonstrated.

The ACeS satellite system provides voice and data services to mobile users throughout the Asia Pacific region. The space segment of the ACeS system provides high quality signal on the ground to allow communication with small mobile terminals. The phase noise and transient performance of the overall communications system are very important performance parameters for mobile communications systems. A centralized frequency generation system was employed for generating all local oscillator frequencies for the ACeS payload. A major design criteria was to mitigate the risks associated with single event upsets (SEU), which necessitated the use of either low speed or high speed refresh circuits for each synthesizer device. The high-speed refresh option caused continuous sidebands and degraded phase noise performance on some phase-locked loop designs. This paper provides an overview of how refresh options were chosen to minimize phase noise and spurious degradation effects and also provides phase noise characterization of each local oscillator. The phase noise performance at component, subsystem and system level is also presented.

A novel implementation of a vertically coupled, 1.3 /spl mu/m wavelength waveguide integrated InGaAs photodiode with distributed absorption is proposed using an index matching layer that can improve optical saturation power, responsivity and bandwidth. Waveguide photodiode made with this design shows a RF 1-dB compression point up to 10.2 mA at 20 GHz with CW optical power. Furthermore, the device has a 47 GHz 3-dB bandwidth, and 0.4 A/W microwave responsivity at 20 GHz without anti-reflection coating.

This paper presents for the first time a high efficiency SiGe HBT based CDMA power amplifier (PA) for PCS handset applications. Under IS-95 CDMA modulation at 1.88 GHz and 3.4 V bias voltage, the two-stage amplifier exhibits 41% power-added efficiency and 30 dBm linear output power with -46 dBc adjacent-channel-power-ratio (ACPR) and 23 dB gain. The SiGe HBTs used in the amplifier were fabricated in a production qualified 8-inch SiGe BiCMOS production process. This performance demonstrates for the first time that SiGe technology can provide competitive performance for PCS wireless handset PA applications.
