The paper discusses the concept of using two single-mode resonators to construct a quasi dual-mode resonator that has all the features of traditional dual-mode resonators. Two novel filter structures are presented in this paper that employs this concept; one employs planar type resonators and the other employs dielectric resonators. A new configuration for a single mode dielectric resonator is also proposed in this paper. The use of such type of resonators makes it possible to construct dielectric resonator filters that are much smaller in size than conventional TE/sub 01/ single mode resonators. Measured and theoretical results are presented to verify the concepts proposed in this paper.

Phased arrays with reduced cost and increased power handling capability are important for commercial applications. In this paper, we demonstrate beam-steering arrays using reconfigurable periodic structures in the ground plane without solid-state phase shifters. A linearly discrete beam-steering of 35/spl deg/ in steps of approximately 6/spl deg/ has been achieved at a fixed frequency of 5.6 GHz. The main beam power varied less than 2 dB over the whole range of beam-steering. A frequency-dependent beam-steering of 15/spl deg/ is also achieved from 5 GHz to 6 GHz.

A three stage high power amplifier (HPA) module for wide-band CDMA handy phones using an HPF/LPF combined interstage matching circuit has been developed. An HPF/LPF combined interstage matching circuit can realize both the optimum load impedance of the second stage FET and the optimum source impedance of the third stage FET to achieve high efficiency. The developed three stage HPA module, size of which is 0.08cc (7 mm/spl times/7 mm./spl times/1.7 mm), achieves a power-added efficiency of 43.9% and an output power of 27.1 dBm with an adjacent channel leakage power (ACP) of -38 dBc at 1.95 GHz.

In this paper, lead network circuit technique to design high efficiency Class F amplifiers using new types of loading circuits was demonstrated. The loading circuits were realized using both lumped elements and transmission lines. The derived values of each circuit element are given. The simulation procedure and experimental verification were performed on the example of high-voltage LDMOSFET power amplifier. The test measurements show that, for this power amplifier, 76% drain efficiency can be achieved for 20 W output power at 500 MHz operating frequency.

We report here our recent discoveries relating to the dispersion behaviors of printed-circuit transmission lines. Such behaviors relate to those of both the bound dominant mode and the space-wave leaky modes propagating at rather low frequencies. The discovered behaviors affect significantly the performance of microwave and millimeter-wave integrated circuits.

A full W-band, MMIC amplifier has been tested on-wafer. The chip delivers 25-43 mW with 6.2/spl plusmn/1.2 dB associated large-signal gain across 75-110 GHz when input power is held constant at 8 mW. This is the widest bandwidth MMIC amplifier ever published that delivers at least 25 mW over the entire W-band.

In this paper we present some results of a primary development of microstrip bandpass filters comprised of triangular patch resonators for high temperature superconducting (HTS), micromachined circuits and other applications. Advantages of a triangular patch resonator filter are not only its higher capability of power handling, but also its natural circuit topology that can inherently implement finite-frequency transmission zeros in a simple cascading structure. In order to have the transmission zeros on the either side of the passband, two different resonant modes of triangular patch resonators are employed. Two three-pole filters of this type, which may form the basic units for higher order filters, are for the first time demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally.

Practical realization of NRD (non-radiative dielectric)-guide components such as filter, T-junction or hybrid planar NRD-guide circuit is rather complicated because of the alignment requirement of various elements of the structure. We present a new platform called "Engraved NRD-guide (ENRD)". In this proposed structure, only the outline of NRD-guide is machined out of a dielectric block. It eliminates the alignment constraint and allows for a more precision design/realization and also a better physical integrity of the overall circuit. Using the ENRD-guide, a microstrip-to-NRD-guide transition and a filter were realized and measured, confirming its feasibility. It is believed that this technique will ease the fabrication of NRD-based millimeter-wave transceiver that may involve multiple NRD components.

We have employed a portable near-field scanner operating at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths to map the 2D amplitude and phase patterns of a radio beam. Combined with a numerical transform, we have developed a novel alignment procedure to diagnose the alignment error in a complex receiving system. The optics of a multiband, superconducting receiver have been aligned using this technique.

This paper presents evaluation of EMI with a hearing aid using electromagnetic modeling and measurements, and acoustic measurements. For modeling the FDTD technique is used, and the fields around a commercial telephone are computed in free space and near a heterogeneous model of the human head. Very good agreement of computed near fields of the telephone in free space is obtained, provided that its antenna is correctly represented. Computed field levels in the ear canal correlate well with the measured acoustic interference levels.
