A novel algorithm based on generalized transmission line equations (GTL) and on the method of lines (MoL) for the analysis of planar waveguide circuits with anisotropic layers is proposed and substantiated. The algorithm uses discretization lines in the propagation direction of the waves. As in the case of multiconductor transmission lines two modal matrices are determined. Impedance/admittance transformation equations are determined on the basis of the GTL equations. Using these equations numerically stable and accurate impedance transformations and field calculations can be performed.

We demonstrate an ultra-wideband fiber optic true time-delay receive beamformer using a chirped grating architecture of identical, cascaded gratings provided continuous, time-delay of up to 2.4 ns. The beamformer system was built using commercially available components, and is capable of continuous tuning over /spl plusmn/60/spl deg/, with an instantaneous bandwidth of 14 GHz.

In this paper a new topology for wideband power distributed amplifiers is proposed. This topology is based on a nonlinearly optimized HBT cascode cell. More than 2 W have been measured in the 2-8 GHz frequency range with an associated gain of 9 dB and a PAE higher than 20%. Those results have been found in good agreement with the simulated ones.

We present hybrid SiGe HBT push-push oscillators at 58 GHz, fabricated on 5 mil alumina substrates. A second output additionally allows us to make use of the fundamental 29 GHz signal. A maximum output power of +1 dBm at 58 GHz and simultaneously of 0 dBm at 29 GHz were achieved. Phase noise at 58 GHz was measured to be -108 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 1 MHz.

The substrate is usually truncated far enough from a microstrip line to avoid disturbing the line characteristics. Such uneconomical practice is not necessary if the disturbances as a function of truncation are known in formulas and therefore are easily compensated. This paper derives the desired formulas from the novel technique of synthetic asymptotes. The formulas cover the full truncation range. The worst error found is about 6% for the line in the two-sided truncation case, but only 3%, i.e., half as much, for the line in the one-sided case at the edge of a large substrate. Their average errors should be only half again.

This paper presents our work on evaluation and qualification of superconductor and cryotechnology for commercial space applications. Issues like characterisation of the HTSC thin films, passivation of superconducting devices against moisture, evaluation and qualification programs for assembly and mounting technologies, qualification methods and procedures for superconducting devices in low and high RF power application are as well addressed as evaluation and qualification of the cryotechnology and the cryocoolers.

A technique is presented to minimise false decisions in automotive microwave radars operating in close proximity. The technique also reduces the requirement on the microwave power of the radar as signals can be detected with very low signal to noise ratios. The signal processing is achieved in real time using a field programmable array.

A new circuit configurations of Band Elimination Filter (BEF) has been invented to recover the attenuation, which was degraded due to the coupling between resonators. The technique of forming an attenuation pole with the laminated planar filter was applied to suppress the influence of coupling. The simulation and the experimental results show that a large attenuation can be obtained by this new configuration. Thus, the very compact BEF's are realized with laminated Low Temperature Cofired Ceramics (LTCC). They are very suitable for next-generation portable telephones.

A 3D photolithographic technique is exploited to produce finite ground coplanar (FGC) transmission lines that transition into and out of silicon micromachined cavities. Each transition was found to introduce an average loss of less than 0.08 dB across the 2-40 GHz range for a cavity depth of 110 /spl mu/m. The demonstration of this technology is a significant step toward fully realizing the circuit packaging capabilities of micromachined silicon and offers the possibility of novel, broadband vertical transitions.

In this paper we extended the RWG basis function to triangular-quadrilateral (Mix-RWG) current basis function. Simple implementation of Mix-RWG based MoM code is done by using hybrid mesh linked list data structure. Compared to RWG basis function, Mix-RWG basis function has many advantages. Numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the new basis function's simplicity and its advantages.
