Objective

At the U.S. Geological Survey Leetown Research Laboratory in Kearneysville, West Virginia, an approximately 3-year-old, captive-held Northern Snakehead Channa argus with clinical signs of abdominal distention died and was necropsied 1 day after an examination under anesthesia. A mass discovered in the midcoelomic cavity, presumed to be deformed spleen, was comprised of large, pseudocystic structures that contained considerable volumes of opaque, straw-colored fluid.

Methods

A histopathological evaluation revealed that the tissue consisted of foci of small capillaries, nodular areas of proliferating, pleomorphic endothelial cells, and areas of necrosis within the pseudocyst wall. Positive nuclear and nonspecific immunolabeling with a vascular marker, cluster of differentiation 31, was concentrated in and around vascular spaces.

Result

Based on these observations, the tumor has been putatively identified as a hemangioendothelial neoplasm.

Conclusion

This would represent the first report of a vascular tumor in a Northern Snakehead and, globally, one of the few described neoplasms identified in a member of the Channidae family.

Objective

The objectives of this study were to describe spatiotemporal patterns of infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV) detections in marine salmonid production sites in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada.

Methods

Infectious salmon anemia virus surveillance data between 2012 and 2020 from the province of Newfoundland and Labrador were used. Data comprised a total of 94 sampling events from 20 Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar production sites in which ISAV was detected. Using linear regression models, factors influencing time to detection (days from stocking to first ISAV detection) and time to depopulation (days from first detection to production site depopulation) were investigated.

Result

Based on 28 unique cases, site-level annual incidence risk of ISAV detection ranged from 3% to 29%. The proportion of ISAV detection by PCR in fish samples ranged from 2% to 45% annually. Overall, ISAV variants from the European clade were more common than variants from the North American clade. The type of ISAV clade, detections of ISAV in nearest production sites based on seaway distances, and year of infectious salmon anemia cases were not associated with time to first ISAV detection. Time to depopulation for sites infected with the ISAV-HPRΔ variant was not associated with ISAV North American or European clades.

Conclusion

Our results contribute to the further understanding of the changing dynamics of infectious salmon anemia detections in Newfoundland and Labrador since its first detection in 2012 and will likely assist in the design of improved disease surveillance and control programs in the province.

Objective

Two Cownose Rays Rhinoptera bonasus were presented for management of a severe capsalid monogenean infection Benedeniella posterocolpa in a mixed species habitat at an aquarium.

Methods

A series of freshwater (FW) dips were elected to mitigate parasite resistance to praziquantel due to the endemic monogenean population in the system. A pretreatment blood sample was opportunistically obtained, and subsequent samples were processed due to development of clinical signs.

Result

While the first FW dip was tolerated well and did not induce abnormal behavior, the second led to one individual presenting with tachypnea, pallor, and lethargy. Marked hematological abnormalities requiring medical intervention occurred in both individuals after the second dip. After treatment with elasmobranch Ringer's fluid therapy, sodium bicarbonate, prednisolone acetate, and vitamin E/selenium in the more severely affected ray, and elasmobranch Ringer's alone in the second ray, hematologic derangements and symptoms resolved. Hemoconcentration, hyperproteinemia, hyperlactatemia, and hyperglycemia were attributed to a stress response. A selective loss of urea after exposure to FW resulted in decreased plasma osmolality.

Conclusion

Given the severity of the stress response and associated complications observed, hyposalinity treatments should be utilized with caution in this species. If this therapy is employed, the clinician is advised to be prepared to administer supportive care coinciding with the FW dip if necessary.
