Based on the complexities within the natural water, heavy metal element Cr in K2Cr2O7 solution and the treated water of Poyang Lake are both detected in this paper by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Compared with the K2Cr2O7 solution, the better trigger frequency with less interference from other ions or impurities in the detection of PoYang Lake water is available. And the best frequency in detection of Poyang Lake water is 1Hz when taken Cr I at 425.43nm, 427.48nm and 428.97nm into consideration, while the best frequency for detecting K2Cr2O7 solution is 2Hz. However, the linear regression correlation coefficients in the analysis of Cr at 425.43nm in K2Cr2O7 solution and the treated water are both high under the frequency of 1Hz. It demonstrates that a better multivariate combination can be done to improve the use of LIBS in the determination of complex material for broadening the spectral detection range of target element or the detected objects.

Self-Phase Modulation (SPM) can not be ignored in single light source OFDM system, so it is necessary to overcome the influence of SPM. A joint equalization solution to optical OFDM system based on orthogonal wavelet transform is proposed in this paper. In this method, block pilots are periodically inserted into the frame of OFDM signals. At receiver, the phase rotations of pilots are extracted to pre-compensation. Then, Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE) equalizer based on Voterra is applied to compensation the SPM. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for 100 Gbit/s optical 16QAM-OFDM system in which the G.652 fiber with nonlinear coefficient of 2.6/w/km is used.

In this article we present a concept of a prototype design of the femtosecond laser micromachining system and a femtosecond solid-state Yb:KYW laser developed in our laboratory. Ultra-short laser pulses have many advantages over the long pulses laser micromachining, due to their unique ability to interact with different materials without transferring heat to them. This allows very precise and pure laser-processing, clean cuts and sharp edges. A femtosecond laser micromachining device presented here is equipped with a synchronized motion control system. Application of this advanced motion system results in the maximum use of the femtosecond laser potential for high-precision micromachining.

Two-dimensional coupled photonic crystals waveguides (CPCWs) constructed with a portion of 12-fold photonic quasicrystals are studied. Finite-difference time-domain is performed to investigate the properties of light propagating through the waveguides, and shows that reduced group velocity and flexible waveguide modes can be obtained in such CPCW structures. Our results verify a feasible way for constructing wavelength filter, demultiplexer, etc. multichannel operations for photonic integrated circuits.

In order to improve the conversion efficiency of thin film solar cells, tandem technology is used to absorb the solar spectrum. Since nano-crystalline silicon film has the characteristic of good photosensitivity, good absorption coefficient and stability under light soak, this thin film is expected to replace the amorphous silicon as the top solar cell in tandem solar cells. In this paper, the nc-Si/uc-Si tandem solar cell was optimized by simulation. The simulation results show that the band gap of the top cell has very important influence on the conversion efficiency of the tandem cell. When the band gap increases from 1.8eV to 2.1eV, the efficiency can be raised more than 3 percentage points. And the influences of the bottom cell, the tunneling junction are also discussed.

We propose and simulate a code-division-multiplexing (CDM) over-fiber passive optical network (COF-PON) system using novel logical operation coding to eliminate multiple access interference (MAI). In this COF-PON system, CDM is accomplished in the frequency domain. At the transmitter, data from each user is encoded with a group of selected subcarriers, and then fed through the fiber. Non-linear effect of the transmission fiber is also considered. This coding method is simple and cost-effective. With the simulation, we tested and compared the Q factor of 1Gb/s and 0.5Gb/s downstream signals, and proved the proposed coding scheme to be feasible.

Edge enhancement is a key part of image processing in order to sharpen the edge and optimize the visual quality of the input image. This paper proposes novel edge-directed enhancement spatial phase filters based on the generalized radial Hilbert transform theory. The simulated results showed that the proposed spatial phase filters are more efficient and flexible for edge-directed enhancement than conventional mathematical morphological edge enhancement algorithms.

Optical characteristics of the multi-channel filters based on the two-dimensional photonic crystals with oval defects are studied. Shape alteration of the air hole from a circle to an ellipse offers a powerful approach to engineer the resonant wavelength of channel filters. It is found that the resonant wavelength can be flexibly adjusted only by changing the oval's obliquity. A six-channel side-coupled drop filters based on the oval holes with different obliquities is designed, and a good wavelength filtering ability is obtained.

In this paper, an approach based on generalized gradient vector flow (GGVF) snake model is proposed for automatic segmentation of liver tumor ultrasound images. According to it the initial contour of GGVF snake can be generated automatically in stead of artificial appointment. The preprocess including anisotropic diffusion filtering and texture classification is implemented on ultrasound images, which ensures the initial contour close to the tumor's real boundaries. The edge map function of GGVF is also modified for obtaining better segmenting performance on ultrasound images. Experimental results show the approach is suitable and effective for segmentation of liver tumor in ultrasound images.
