In recent years philosophical circles in China, on the basis of deepend discussion of the criterion of practice and the basic problems ofl philosophy, have launched a debate on the issue of subject and object. This bears bothy theoretical and practical significance to the endeavor of deepening the study of epistemology and establishing a Marxist philosophical system of categories of logic.

What position does the category of transformation hold in materialist dialectics? Arguments prevalent in the past ascribed it to the identity of contradiction, viewing it as an implication of identity. Comrades Rong Kaiming and Lai Chuanxiang published in the fourth issue of Philosophic Studies of 1983 an article entitled "Transformation Is a Relatively Independent Overall Category," which offers a different view. The article holds that the process of transformation itself is not an implication of the identity of contradiction but that the tendency and possibility of transformation has just such an implication. Furthermore, the article groups all categories of dialectics into three different levels and theorizes that the transformation, relation, and development of contradiction are an array of overall categories of materialist dialectics at the primary level; the various laws of dialectics and different pairs of categories are categories at the secondary level subordinate to the overall categories. Engels once described man's consciousness as the most beautiful flower on earth. For man to have consciousness is the most essential factor that differentiates him from animals. In order to know and master man by himself man must first acquire a deep understanding of consciousness—the essential property of mankind. And to understand consciousness we must proceed from its various specific properties and, through extracting and purifying, arrive at its most fundamental property.

In the article "Is Man the Starting Point of Marxism?" (published in Philosophical Studies, no. 3, 1983) Comrade Mao Chongjie remarked: "The problem is not to what extent Marx emphasized man nor on how many occasions Marx mentioned man in his works. The problem is whether or not we should and how we could persevere in the materialist conception of history over the issue of man." Nevertheless, the author held that the cause for the progress of history lies "outside man" and therefore the source or cause of the essential determinative of man also lies "outside man." Whatever the explanation, a viewpoint as such cannot be regarded as having "persevered in the materialist conception of history," either. In fact, it can be traced to the same origin as the idea of negating practice as the basic category of historical materialism, which the author stated in another article. (See "Also on the System of Marxist Philosophy," Xueshu yuekan [Academia Monthly], no. 2, 1983.)

The article is of the opinion that simultaneous with the study of practice as an aggregate that conditions the movement of knowledge an in-depth inquiry should be made into the structure and function of practice and its law of development from different angles. The article lays emphasis on probing into the following: the process in which the capacity for practice is converted from potential into reality and the specific social and historical conditions for the conversion; the dialectic relations between the purpose and effect, the effect and efficiency, and the general and the partial effect of practice and the objective criterion to judge the effect; and the feedback mechanism of the movement of practice and its function. On the basis of the above, the article analyzes the intricate interactions between practice and its various links of efficacy, effect, and feedback and arrives at the conclusion that the dialectical cycle of "practice-efficacy-effect-feedback-practice" is objective, universal, dynamic, ...

The history of philosophy is the history of entire knowledge, a definition made by Lenin.1 At the same time Lenin also pointed out that throughout the two thousand years of development of philosophy the struggle between idealism and materialism, between the lines or tendencies, has never come to a stalemate.2 Based on what Lenin had pointed out, Redanov [translation of the name in Chinese—Tr.] of the Soviet Union repudiated Alexandrov's definition of the history of philosophy. As a matter of fact, in defining it as the history of knowledge, Alexandrov also drew his idea from Lenin's definition. The history of philosophy is the history of knowledge and also the history of the struggle between materialism and idealism. The two definitions should complement rather than exclude each other. However, in applying them a deviation will emerge as if the use of the one would invariably violate the other. In writing The History of Philosophy of West Europe, Alexandrov applied the idea that the history of philosophy ...

Selections from Deng Xiaoping, long expected by the people across the country, is now off press. It is a major event of the political life of the people in our country. The book is the product of a great period of historical change. By pooling the collective wisdom of the Party, it sums up the experience of history, gives expression to the people's demands and aspirations, and bears both far-reaching historical significance and major significance for immediate guidance.

In his report to the Party Twelfth National Congress, Comrade Hu Yaobang pointed out that simultaneous to the construction of a high level of material civilization efforts must also be made to build a high level of spiritual civilization. This is an issue related to the strategic policy of building socialism. The historical experience of socialism and realities in China today tell us that whether or not this policy can be adhered to will have a bearing on the rise or fall, success or failure, of socialism. Why should we raise the question to such a high plane? How can a high level of spiritual civilization be built simultaneously with a high level of material civilization? In advancing a coordinated development of the two, this article tries to inquire into the above problems and provide some theoretical explanations.

It was in the mid-seventh century that Buddhism was introduced into the Tibetan region of our country. (1) At that time, the crucible of its fermentation was exclusively the royal court of the Turfan and several noble families; it had very little effect on the masses of the Tibetan people. In society, the dominant position, as far as religious belief was concerned, was occupied by a primitive, naturalistic religion known as Bon-po.
