For all practical purposes the actual meaning of medico legal term is medical treatment and its legal association to it. One should be aware of all possible medico legal aspects when dealing with patients. Since the government of India labels the practice of medical profession as business one should be aware of consumer protection acts. Day by day the medicolegal cases are increasing and one should have adequate knowledge to take care of themselves. It is not uncommon that the doctors are sued for the sake of money and well-targeted as the profession is legally bound. This article highlights the concerns about medicolegal aspects in relation to anesthesiologists.

The sequence in which the writing strokes have been executed on a paper is known as sequence of strokes. Examining the sequence of strokes can help in determining the relative age of ink which is required in various cases related to document examination including examination of wills, cheques, statements, receipts, agreements etc. The current study is focused on examining the sequence of strokes executed with a ball point pen. Video Spectral Comparator 8000 (VSC8000) has been used for the current examination. The test samples and the actual questioned documents were examined under VSC8000. It was observed that depending on the pressure through which the strokes have been executed, identification of sequence of two or more intersecting writing strokes was possible.

“Death occurring in some form of custodial detention is commonly known as death in custody, such as police cell or prison”. ‘Right to Life’ implies the duty of state to respect and ensure the right to life of each and every individual within their jurisdiction including the individuals held in custody by law enforcement agencies. Studies across the globe have noticed that most of the custodial deaths are natural. Death of a person in custody is always a matter of concern especially when it is unnatural one. This study was undertaken to know the pattern of custodial deaths in different aspects. Out of total 28 cases autopsied during study period of 5 years 26 (92.86%) individuals were prisoners whereas only 2 (7.14%) belonged to police custody. Among 28 cases 23 (82.14%) deaths were natural and 5 (17.86%) were unnatural deaths. Tuberculosis 7 (25%) was most common culprit among natural deaths. Total 25 (89.28%) were male and only 3 (10.72%) were females among study population and most of the cases 7 (25%) belonged to 51-60yr age group. As far as unnatural deaths are concerned 4 deaths were suicidal and only one case was homicidal.

Suicide is defined as “the act of killing yourself deliberately”. Most common methods of committing suicide in India are hanging, followed by poisoning, drowning and self-immolation. While least common methods include consuming sleeping pills, electrocution, self-inflicting injuries and firearm injury. Considering deaths due to electrocutions, in India as well as globally, suicidal electrocutions are reported to be very rare compared to accidental ones. Existing literature also have scarcity of reports related to suicidal electrocutions. Hence, we hereby report a case of suicidal electrocution due to its rarity.

Household poisons are substances in home that can cause harm when swallowed, inhaled or touched. They include medicines, detergents, cleaning products, toiletries, garden chemicals and other common household products. Each year hundreds of people from all age groups require medical attention for poisoning from products commonly found around the home. This type of poisoning occurs more commonly in children under five years of age. We are presenting summary of 7 cases of common household chemicals poisoning among pediatric age group brought for post-mortem examination at Department of Forensic Medicine, Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi.

Conscious sedation is most commonly practiced in western world in comparison to developing and underdeveloped countries. Due to advancement of technology and availability of safety drugs to anesthetize the patient is helping the patients to undergo certain procedures especially in dentistry. This technique helps mainly for pediatric patients and to patients who are very anxious. One should not forget that if patient selection is not appropriate or if minimum required facilities are not available then he or she may have to face medico-legal problems. This article reviews the concept of conscious sedation and the role of anesthesiologists.

The hanging is commonly observed in most of the crime scene in northen Indian region. Hanging is mostly suicidal in nature and the second most common way, out of various means adopted by suicide victims. An investigating officer must adopt a scientific method to evaluate the incidence by logical and proper investigations and reconstruction of the case. The present study highlight some important and meaningful points in hanging cases.

Acquired immuno deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a lethal epidemic which alarmingly decreases the body’s ability to combat disease resulting in susceptibility to infection. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/ AIDS have now moved from being viewed solely as a public health issue to a human rights issue. The goal in this regard is now to strengthen the anti-discrimination and other protective laws that safeguard the vulnerable group. To ensure confidentiality and privacy of people living with AIDS, legal and ethical implications for the medical profession are discussed here.In this article, many aspects of HIV / AIDS are discussed in general along with some ethical issues. Odisha is a state with low prevalence of AIDS, and attempts have been made at various levels to make it a zero prevalence state. In this regard, a study of the epidemiological scenario & steps taken by Odisha State AIDS Control Society (OSACS) and to reduce the prevalence in the state and ensure every person living with HIV has access to quality care and is treated with dignity.

Aim of the study was to estimate the age of an individual from the fusion of the secondary ossification center of the shoulder joint. The study was conducted on 60 subjects who were randomly selected from various schools as well as the cases attending the outpatient Department of General Medicine, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Madras Medical College, Chennai. After obtaining written consent from each individual, radiological examination was done. After the statistical analysis it was observed that in the age group 16-17 males, there were no complete union, among females in the same age group. It was 30%, in the age group 17-18, percentage of complete union was 30.76 among males and 40% among females, in the age group 18-19, percentage of complete union was 33.33% among males and 50% among females. It was concluded that the age of complete fusion of epiphysis of the shoulder joint was 17-18 years for males and 16-17 years for females and the earliest union occurred at the age of 15 years in females and 17 years in males which was higher than the previous studies
