Myotis alticraniatus is a small mammal species with widespread distribution in Vietnam and other Asian countries. However, prior to the present study, its echolocation calls were poorly documented. Between 2018 and 2020, we conducted bat surveys in Cat Ba National Park and other areas of Vietnam. Echolocation calls of the species were obtained in different recording situations: handheld, flying inside a fight tent and foraging in natural habitats. The average initial frequency (iFM) and terminal frequency (tFM) of this species’ echolocation calls are in ranges of 113.2-140 kHz and 57.8-68.6 kHz, respectively. Its call duration is in a range of 1.6-3.9 ms. When detecting an object or prey in natural habitats, the species emitted echolocation calls in groups of up to 10 signals with the iFM and tFM values in ranges of 60.6-64.3 kHz and 28.2-31.0 kHz, respectively. Results from the present study exhibited a wide variation in frequencies and signal shapes of the species echolocation calls.

Three benzothiazole aniline derivatives 2a, 2b, and 2c were synthesized successfully by the reduction reaction of the respective nitro compound in neutral condition with Na2S2O4 in moderate yield. Structures of these derivatives were elucidated by IR, NMR, and MS analysis that referred to a strong agreement between spectral data and structures. Three compounds 2a, 2b, and 2c showed weak antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal activities.

In this work, the affection of the Dicke narrowing effect on the spectral shape of the 𝜈3 + 𝜈4 R(7)F1 transition of methane diluted in nitrogen was studied using the Hard- and the Soft- collision line-shape models. Room-temperature absorption spectra of CH4 broadened by N2 were measured at a wide range of pressure using a difference-frequency laser spectrometer. Measured spectra of the studied transition were then one-by-one fitted with the simple Voigt profile as well as the two line-shape models considered the Dicke narrowing effect at two different assumptions of velocity-changing collisions: hard- and soft- collisions. The obtained results confirmed that using these two models leads to better qualities of fit with respect to the Voigt profile. Pressure-dependences of the line-shape parameters were also observed for the considered transition. The results showed a good agreement with other studies.

Two individuals of Indochinese grey langur (Trachypithecus crepusculus) at Hanoi Zoo were studied from August 2014 to January 2015 with a total of 47 observation days and 4290 records to preliminarily determine their activity budget, food composition, and the influence of environmental factors including temperature, humidity, and human impact on their behaviours. The results show that there is a big difference between the activity budget of the two captive individuals and that of freeranging individuals. Furthermore, their food composition was also very different from that of individuals living in the wild and it may be the main reason. From this result, changing the composition of food for Indochinese grey langurs in Hanoi Zoo and limiting the visitors’ food provision needs to be carried out immediately to ensure the health and welfare of these langurs.

Water-soluble porphyrins di(4-aminophenyl)-di(4-sulfophenyl)- diphenyl-porphyrin [(SO3)2-TPP-(NH2)2](TASP) and nano-silver materials (AgNPs) were successfully synthesized by chemical synthesis and green synthesis from guava leaf extracts, respectively. The silver nanoparticle size is well controlled in the range of 1.1 - 1.5 nm. Then, AgNPsTASP hybrid materials were successfully synthesized by different mixing methods. The UV-Vis spectrum of the hybrid material depends on the AgNPs:TASP mixing ratio and still shows the Soret peaks and Q-bands characteristic of the porphyrin family and the broad absorption range from 300 - 600 nm of the silver nanoparticles initial. The results of an antibacterial test against both gram-negative and gram-positive strains on LB agar showed that all samples had different antibacterial activities. In which, the AgNPsTASP hybrid material has better inactivation ability than silver nano for both tested bacterial strains. Besides, the presence of polypyrrole conducting polymer (PPy) has promoted the kinetics of silver ion release, which also gives outstanding antibacterial results, thereby opening the potential to fabricate hybrid materials for antibacterial applications.

Bat flies are highly specialized ectoparasites of the superfamily Hippoboscoidea and only associate with bats. They were rarely documented in Vietnam due to limited study in the country. Between 2017 and 2020, we conducted a series of field surveys in six localities in northern and central Vietnam with an emphasis on bat flies. Bats were captured using mist nets, harp traps, and handnets then morphologically identified following literatures relevant to the bats of each study site. Bat flies were collected using fine forceps and preserved in 70% alcohol for morphological identification. Twelve individuals of Brachytarsina cucullata and thirty-five individuals of Raymondia pseudopagodarum of the family Streblidae were collected over the surveys. Of which, B. cucullata is new to two localities in northern Vietnam (Nham Duong Mountain Area and Ha Long Bay) while R. pseudopagodarum is new to five localities in both northern and southern Vietnam (Bach Ma National Park, Cat Ba National Park, Ha Long Bay, Cu Lao Cham Island and Sop Cop Nature Reserve). Within Vietnam, B. cucullata and R. pseudopagodarum were only recorded from Cat Ba National Park and Vu Quang National Park, respectively. Notably, the previous records from Vietnam did not include either description or illustration. We here provide brief descriptions and illustrated photos of each species for morphological identification of these two bat fly species. A map showing the distributional records of each species is also included in this paper.

Igname yams are agricultural products with high economic and nutritional value. Igname yam plants are grown a lot in our country, especially in Bac Giang province. The aim of this study was to the determination of nutritional components and sensory of igname yam in Bac Giang province. Research results have identified water content in igname yam is 69.3 ± 0.2%, total lipid content is 4.2 ± 0.1%, total glucide content is 20.5 ± 0.1%, total protein content was 2.6 ± 0.1%, vitamin B1 was 28.5 ± 0.1mg% and vitamin B2 was 12.3 ± 0.1mg%. Besides, the content of minerals, such as Ca, Mg, Mn, P, K, Na, Zn, Cu, S, and Fe, fluctuates in the range of 1.4 to 34mg%. By the HPLC method, 17 amino acids have been identified in igname yam. Among those, there were 9 non-substituting amino acids, including histidine, arginine, threonine, valine, methionine, lysine, isoleucine, leucine, and phenylalanine. The igname yam meat has an ivory white color, a characteristic aroma, a fatty taste, a spongy and friable structure. These are important scientific bases for selecting igname yam for processing food products.
