There are various facets that can play a telling role in mitigating the aspect of climate change and the linkages associated with it. While largely the global focus has been on energy transition and moving away from fossil fuel-based consumption, a lot needs to be explored on how we as a society need to move towards responsible production and consumption patterns and the elements that can enable it. The phenomenon of climate change and sustainability is rooted in the products/services and their eventual mass consumption that warrant their degradation. Given the wide range of interdependencies that exist within the ecosystem of sustainability, this paper brings to light the need for analysing our consumption and production patterns through the lens of complex system mechanism, and its subsequent impact on India and the world.

The paper is based on the increased importance of environmental, social, and governance factors in the present-day investing, especially in the COVID-19 pandemic period. The increased trends are not only witnessed in developed economies but also evident in developing economics like India. The possible reasons are attributable to enhanced risk awareness and sensitivity of institutional investors towards ESG issues, thereby, leading to price discovery of ESG factors through increased integration in investment portfolios. The need for prioritizing social investments is clear, especially after the onset of the pandemic. However, the major barriers appear to be lack of relevant knowledge on ESG issues and apathy of investors in formulating an ESG investing framework. The paper provides certain insights on the present-day ESG frameworks and principles that can be adopted by financial managers and asset management companies to generate better risk adjusted returns.

Exploring the Natural Gas Landscape in India
Pub Date : 2022-08-25 DOI: 10.3233/red-170201
Sayeh Shojaeinia, Shashwat Sharma, Greer K. Gosnell, M. Bazilian
This paper considers the growing importance of natural gas in India’s energy landscape. India, like other developing economies, faces enormous challenges in providing a source of energy that is secure, affordable, transportable, and relatively clean for sustained economic growth while moving towards a carbon neutral society. Natural gas has been identified by the government as one part of that solution. We focus our non-comprehensive review on three primary end uses of natural gas in India: city gas distribution (including household and transport), power generation, and industry (e.g., fertilizers, steel, refinery, petrochemicals). The allocation of domestically sourced natural gas for end-use sectors depends on central government policy guidelines. Also, less regulatory restriction is applied for imported gas, and the market can freely import liquefied natural gas. This review lays the groundwork for more detailed analysis, and for identifying tradeoffs between the use of natural gas versus other forms of energy for power and other sectors in the Indian context.

Impact of Odd–Even Scheme on Travel Pattern in Delhi
Pub Date : 2021-03-27 DOI: 10.3233/RED-170103
P. Thakur, Sharif Qamar
The paper intends to assess the impact of the odd–even scheme on the travel pattern of the daily commuters in Delhi. The objective of the paper is to assess the impact of the odd–even scheme on mode choice for daily work trips, shift in travel patterns – before, during, and post-implementation – of the odd–even scheme, and to understand people perception regarding the odd–even scheme. Based on the primary survey, the paper concludes that the odd–even scheme brought a significant impact in the travel pattern in terms of occupancy, travel cost, travel time, and modal shift, and statistically not so much on the air quality gain. It was observed that the scheme helped increase the occupancy rate in cars as well as ridership of buses and Delhi metro. The scheme had a huge impact on congestion, which was evident from both perception analysis and the change in travel time. The modal shift, with an improvement in public transport services and a reduction in car users, is one of the key successes of the scheme resulting in decrease in air pollution caused by private vehicles. To improve the outcome of the odd–even scheme on air pollution, two-wheelers should not be exempted going forward.

HAZMAT, defined as materials which can harm people, organisms, and the environment, are a critical part of the industry supply chain as raw material, intermediates, or finished products. A strong and effective regulatory framework for dealing with HAZMAT and its proper management is of utmost importance for ensuring adequate safety and minimizing the risks during different stages of supply chain (manufacturing, storage, transportation). In view of this, the objective of research was to study the prevailing regulatory framework for supply chain management of HAZMAT in the context of Indian chemical industry.

Rising greenhouse gas emissions is an important issue of the current time. India’s massive greenhouse gas emissions is ranked third globally. The escalating energy demand in the country has opened the gateway for further increase in emissions. Recent studies suggest strong nexus between energy consumption, economic growth, and carbon emissions. This study has the objective to empirically test the aforementioned interdependencies. The co-integration test and multivariate vector error correction model (VECM) are used for the analysis and the Granger Causality test is used to establish the direction of causality. The time-series data for the period of 1971–2011 is used for the analysis. The results of the study confirm strong co-integration between variables. The causality results show that economic growth exerts a causal influence on carbon emissions, energy consumption exerts a causal influence on economic growth, and carbon emissions exert a causal influence on economic growth. Based on the results, the study suggests a policy that focuses on energy conservation and gradual replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources, which would be beneficial for the environment and the society.
