The genus Lindera consists of approximately 100 species that are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world. Most Lindera plants, particularly Lindera aggregata is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine that has important medicinal value and health benefits. Contemporary chemical and pharmacological studies have shown that L. aggregata are a source of structurally diverse molecules having pharmacological potential. In an effort to promote research on L. aggregata and develop therapeutic and pharmacological products, this review describes the structural diversity of its components and pharmacological and biological significance of L. aggregata. This review is based on a literature analysis of scientific journals from electronic sources, such as Science Direct, PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science. Thus, with the growing interest in traditional medicine and botanical drugs worldwide, L. aggregata will increasingly capture chemists’ and pharmacologists’ attention because they produce diverse and structurally novel compounds having pharmacological significance.

Neurodegeneration is a progressive loss of neurons both structurally and functionally causing neuronal cell death ultimately leading to development of various neurodegenerative diseases. Due to poor pharmacokinetic profile of neurotrophins, there still remains a challenge in their neurotrophic therapy where plants, bacteria and fungi, as natural products, could act as promising candidates against various neurological disorders by modulating the neurotrophic activity. Therefore, these natural products that mimic neurotrophins, could develop novel therapeutic approaches to herbal drug that can ameliorate neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other associated neurological disorders. Taking into account the failure of strategies involving single neurotrophins for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, we propose a combination of small molecules of natural products that may work synergistically to restore neuronal functions, minimize side effects and target multiple pathways for a more effective treatment.

Medicinal and aromatic plants can be considered as “multifunctional plants” due to the diverse properties and ecosystem services they provide in agroecosystems. Among the latter, they regulate the populations of insect pests in crops, harboring their natural enemies. In order to determine the plant species with the greatest presence of natural enemies of Saissetia oleae in an agro-ecological crop of Olea europea, biological corridors with species of medicinal and aromatic plants were established in three sectors of the farm. The plants were collected together with the farmers of the Maipo Province and sticky pheromone traps, vacuum cleaner and entomological umbrella were used to collect the arthropods. The results indicate that Calendula officinalis, Borago officinalis, Aquilea millefolium, Linun usitatissimun, Chamaemulum nobile, Origanum vulgare, Artemisia agrotanum and Symphytum officinale are the species with the highest presence of S. oleae natural enemies identified as Coccophagus sp., Metaphycus helvolus, Metaphycus lounsbury, Metaphycus sp., Rhyzobius lophanthae, Scutellista caerulea.

Triatoma infestans (Klug) is the principal vector of Chagas disease in Bolivia and neighboring countries. The objective of this study was to determine the chemical composition of the EO of the Chilean laurel, Laurelia sempervirens (Ruiz & Pav.) Tul. (Monimiaceae) and to evaluate its repellent effect on fifth-instar nymphs of T. infestans. The EO from L. sempervirens was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Their main components were cis-isosafrole (89.8%), βterpinene (3.9%), trans-ocimene (2.7%) and methyleugenol (2.2%). Repellency was evaluated on a circle of filter paper divided into two equal zones which were impregnated with test substances [EO or N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) as positive control] and acetone as blank control, respectively. Several concentrations of test substances between 4.125 and 132 μg/cm were tested. The EO from L. sempervirens produced significant repellency at concentrations equal or above 66.0 μg/cm, while DEET repelled starting at 16.5 μg/cm. Future works will be oriented to the study of repellent properties of cis-isosafrole alone and mixed with β-terpinene, trans-ocimene and methyleugenol on T. infestans.

This work rescues the ethnobotanical heritage of the northernmost region of Uruguay. In this country, ethnobotany has had little development, with scarce studies and scientific publications. The study area includes the departments of: Artigas, Rivera, Tacuarembó and Cerro Largo. Through random sampling, 315 people were interviewed. Among other variables, the data obtained refer to the special uses of the plants. The information was processed in the spreadsheet and listed by means of descriptive statistics techniques. 134 species used were identified, distributed in 57 botanical families. The most frequent families were: Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Apiaceae and Fabaceae. Conventional medicine is complemented with cultivated plants that have medicinal applications. Nine forms of uses were reported, the infusion proved to be the most used practice. The knowledge related to the properties of plants comes from older people and is transmitted by oral tradition. The methodology can be replicated to other areas of the country.

The essential oil of Laurus nobilis L. was used to test their antinociceptive efficacy. It was applied intraperitoneally (i.p.) to rats subjected to a nociception test (C reflex and spinal wind-up). The results showed that the essential oil applied at higher doses (0.06 mg/Kg) causes a complete abolition of the spinal wind-up, while the C reflex was unchanged, indicating a clear antinociceptive effect. At lower concentrations (0.012 mg/Kg), there was a lowering in the wind-up by 85% within ten minutes of the essential i.p. oil application. Interestingly, there was an effect of naloxone (0.08 mg/Kg i.p.) When applied, a change occurs that almost entirely reversed the antinociception caused by the essential oil from Laurus nobilis. We conclude that there is a significant antinociceptive effect of the essential oil of Laurus nobilis subjected to electric nociception. In addition, it was observed that naloxone reversed the antinociceptive effect (windup) produced by Laurus nobilis.

Selaginella is the only genus from Selaginellaceae, and it is considered a key factor in studying evolution. The family managed to survive the many biotic and abiotic pressures during the last 400 million years. The purpose of this review is to provide an up-to-date overview of Selaginella in order to recognize their potential and evaluate future research opportunities. Carbohydrates, pigments, steroids, phenolic derivatives, mainly flavonoids, and alkaloids are the main natural products in Selaginella. A wide spectrum of in vitro and in vivo pharmacological activities, some of them pointed out by folk medicine, has been reported. Future studies should afford valuable new data on better explore the biological potential of the flavonoid amentoflavone and their derivatives as chemical bioactive entities; develop studies about toxicity and, finally, concentrate efforts on elucidate mechanisms of action for biological properties already reported.

Culantro de monte (Eryngium foetidum L.) is a biennial herb of tropical origin very frequent in America, Africa and the Caribbean. With the arrival of Europeans in the fifteenth century, it managed to be distributed to various locations in Asia and Europe. The present study was carried out in the San Antonio de Padua community in the Province of Los Rios - Ecuador to collect information, through interviews with the residents, regarding the nomenclature and uses of this aromatic herb. It was found that 52% of the interviewees mention a nutritional use, especially as a condiment for fish soup, buns and stews, while 26% say they use this plant for medicinal purposes in infusions to cure stomach and joint pain. The variety of metabolites that it possesses, such as eryngial (E-2-Dodecenal), extends its range of applications in modern medicine. We concluded that the transfer of ethnobotanical information still remains in the community, but the young generations are unaware of several of this plant’s applications.

In order to evaluate the potential of this formulation (P. lentiscus L. oil-based ointment) to heal wounds, experimental wounds were done on guinea pigs and efficiency was comparatively assessed against a reference ointment, Cicaderma®. Wound contraction was performed on days 5, 10 and 15. Tissue sections were also evaluated histopathological on days 7, 14 and 21. Results showed that for all days (5, 10 and 15), the highest wound contraction values were attained for the P. lentiscus oil-based ointment treated group with wound contraction values of 19.38, 55.8 and 77.11%, respectively, as compared to the reference drug Cicaderma® where contractions were 7.97%, 49.53% and 71.44%, respectively. Vehicle and negative control groups however showed no statistically significant wound healing activity on the excision wound model. These experimental studies revealed that the P. lentiscus oil-based ointment displays remarkable wound healing activity, in accordance with its use in traditional medicine.
