In this paper, beam tilting behavior of radiating slots is introduced. When the radiating field intensity is measured in EMI/EMC test, the receiving antenna or probe must be moved along its vertical axis because of its beam tilting behavior. The radiation pattern is measured by near-field measurement system and verified by the finite difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The far-field pattern was obtained from near far field transformation by using near-field data. The beam tilted about 18 /spl deg/ at 10.82 GHz and the FDTD method provides a good result to this measurement.

In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the mutual coupling coefficient among antennas, which is based on the principle of signal subspace and the simulated annealing algorithm. The computer simulation have been conducted to illustrate the good performance of this method and to demonstrate that it is statistically efficient. The benefit of this new method is that calibration signals and unknown signals can be received simultaneously, during the course of calibration.

From a system point of view, the capacity and diversity are the two main characteristics afforded by the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The increasing of capacity of multiple-input-multiple-output space-time system seriously relies on the richness of multipath rays which provide uncorrelated or low-correlated parallel sub-channels. The investigation of performance of indoor MIMO systems using one correlated model presented in this paper shows that the arrangements of antenna array elements as well as the indoor scattering environment influence the spatial cross correlation which in turn influences the system performance. The results of investigation provide insights on the design of indoor space-time systems.

This paper presents and focused primarily on the application of atomic to signal processing, image reconstruction, which is also the subject of the recent publications. However, the potential capabilities of this mathematical tool are quite diverse and they can find wide application of elastic waves, etc. They can be used as the basis functions for solving problems of electrodynamics, antenna analysis and synthesis, etc. Moreover, they can be used in acousto and opto-electronics as well as in signal processing problems in medical equipment in combination with other approaches. For short, it is impossible to consider the capabilities of the theory of atomic functions.

The combined method of integral equation - finite elements (IEM-FEM) has been developed for calculation of optical dielectric waveguide properties. The method is applicable for optical dielectric waveguides with arbitrary core geometry and arbitrary distribution of core index of refraction and the constant cladding index. The cutoff frequencies are obtained for rectangular, elliptical, "rounded rectangle" waveguides and waveguides with concave core shape for aspect ratio from 1.0 to 100.0.

Based on the conventional two-scale model method, and by incorporating the multipath effect, the angular distributions of the backscattering cross section are calculated for the fBm sea model. The conclusion, which is consistent with the experimental measurement, is obtained that the amplitude of the HH backscattering cross section is larger than that of the VV backscattering cross section for a region of the moderate incident angle. The dependence of the region of the moderate incident angle on the incident frequency, the tilting angle of the large-scale surface and the fractal dimension is discussed in detail.

In this article, an eigenstructure-based on-line calibration method is presented to estimate the array channel gain and phase parameters. By employing the characteristics of the DS-CDMA system, the calibration can be carried out while the system is working. So it is quite suitable for the practical application. It first estimates the initial parameters by an iteration algorithm, and then use the subspace tracking method to trace the changes of the gain and phase parameters in real-time. The proposed algorithm is described in detail, and numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and behavior of the calibration method.

The ongoing developments of low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technique are making it more and more attractive for applications in microwave and millimetre wave frequency band. The most active areas for high frequency applications include Bluetooth module, front end module (FEM) of mobile phones, wireless local access network (WLAN). Local multipoint distribution system (LMDS) and collision avoidance radar etc. The recent development of LTCC substrate material extend the applicable frequency of the technique up to 100GHz. Owing to the feature of low conductor loss, low substrate loss, and up to 50 laminated layers, LTCC provide a harmonic bed for embedded microwave and mm wave passive components and accessories including antennas. In addition, LTCC substrate material has a wide tuneable range of thermal expansion coefficient. It is this feature that makes the LTCC substrate very attractive for various integrated packaging. In the presentation, the present status of the technology will be reviewed, from its manufacturing process, material properties to RF and microwave performance of typical LTCC modules. The LTCC market projection and cost issue will be also discussed to have a globe view of the technology. A large number of practical examples for high frequency applications will be followed to display the current technology status. The examples include, but not limited to, (1) RF front end module for mobile phones, (2) antennas for WLAN and Bluetooth devices, (3) laminated waveguide and other new form of transmission lines for mm wave applications, (4) integrated mm wave antenna arrays, and (5) Integrated RF modules such as high performance VCO. balanced LNA, miniaturized RF filters and balun. Since the most challenge issue in LTCC module designs is the integrated passives, the emphasis of the examples will be placed on the embedded passives and system integration. Some practical LTCC modules developed in The Chinese University of Hong Kong are listed in the following. The details of these modules can be found in the listed references and will be further elaborated in the presentation.

A microstrip patch antenna on a two-dimensional multi-period electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure, embedded between the patch and the ground plane, is proposed and studied in this paper. The impedance bandwidth, radiation pattern and gain of the antennas are assessed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations and experimental measurements. The simulated and measured results show that the microstrip patch antenna on the sandwiched multiperiod EBG structure can achieve wider impedance bandwidth and higher gain compared to the one on a single period EBG structure. At the same time, the size of the substrate can be reduced substantially.
