Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore ageing trends and age stereotypes about older workers, focusing primarily on the Italian employment context.Design/methodology/approach – Beginning from a review of the literature on ageing, the paper: outlines ageing trends and discriminatory behaviours against older workers in Italy; identifies patterns in the age discrimination phenomenon based on organisational characteristics; describes training‐based good practices for enhancing the employability of older workers, as implemented by an Italian energy company; presents a range of best practices for age management.Findings – Despite trends towards an ageing general population and an ageing workforce, there is overwhelming evidence of age discrimination against older workers. Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to explore coherence across key disciplines of knowledge management (KM) for a general model as a way to address performance dissatisfaction in the field.Design/methodology/approach – Research employed an evidence‐based meta‐analysis (287 aspects of literature), triangulated through an exploratory survey (91 global respondents), to gather data on the drivers for KM. The paper attempts to demonstrate self‐similarity across six key KM disciplines using fractal theory as a data analysis tool.Findings – Appear to demonstrate self‐affinity between key disciplines in the field of KM. This provides a strong signpost for future research in the field when attempting to address practitioner dissatisfaction in performance.Research limitations/implications – The paper cannot determine importance, or value of the factors discussed. Purpose – Most past research on formal mentoring has investigated its antecedents, outcomes and benefits with little attention given to what goes on inside the dyadic relationship. The purpose of this paper is to explore the types of mentor and mentee behaviours that are perceived as critical factors contributing to either a positive or negative mentoring experience for the mentee and the mentor.Design/methodology/approach – Concrete examples of “effective” and “ineffective” mentor and mentee behaviour were collected from the research participants using Flanagan's Critical Incident Technique (CIT). The obtained CIT data were analyzed using forms of open and axial coding. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of a mentor training intervention for experienced entrepreneurs in order to support and advise new and early stage female entrepreneurs in an attempt to enrich the limited literature of empirical data in the area of mentor training intervention assessment.Design/methodology/approach – For the evaluation of the mentor training programme, a three‐level process has been used (reactions to training, knowledge and skills, behavior). Empirical research consists of quantitative research and different questionnaires were used to obtain information from respondents on a post basis. The sample consists of 52 mentors (experienced entrepreneurs) and 52 female mentees (early stage entrepreneurs). Purpose – The main aim of this paper is to test the ways in which the role of high‐technology services (HTS) in the economy of European Union (EU) member countries changes and the extent to which the development of HTS depends on the quality of human resources.Design/methodology/approach – The paper adopts comparative and cluster analysis of statistical data published by Eurostat.Findings – The empirical analysis approved the growing proportion of HTS in both employment and gross value added in the EU as a whole. However, there are great differences among individual member states that can be grouped into four clusters. HTS have a significantly higher proportion of tertiary educated employees, belong to young sectors and show a higher rate of participation in continuing education. Purpose – This paper aims to outline the financial implications, while deploying information and communication technologies for implementing e‐learning, and to elucidate them, while implementing an e‐learning project in a conventional university environment.Design/methodology/approach – The paper is a descriptive account of the various cost factors and benefits accrued in implementing an e‐learning project and draws on a variety of secondary sources both published and unpublished.Findings – The paper identifies the various cost factors as well as the benefits involved in e‐learning implementation in conventional educational institutions, so that e‐learning implementation is a smooth process.
