The motives for shipping asset securitisation: sale-leaseback transactions in the shipping industry 航运资产证券化的动机:航运业的售后回租交易

ABSTRACT This study investigates shipping firms’ motives for using sale-leaseback (SLBs) transactions. Given the bleak conditions in the shipping industry that have persisted since its collapse in 2008, numerous firms have sought ways to relieve short-term financial distress and secure long-term sustainable growth. This study analyses financial ratios of 123 shipping companies in Korea, 25 of which elected to use SLBs in 2019, in terms of growth, profitability, liquidity and leverage for the period of 2016–2018. Consistent with previous findings, the results show that applying for SLBs is associated with a lack of liquidity. By exploring SLBs as a new financing vehicle for shipping companies, the vast majority of which have been under financial distress and constraints in recent years, this study enriches the existing literature on shipping finance. Besides, this study’s findings on shipping companies’ motives for using SLBs can provide helpful suggestions for designing and implementing government policies for restructuring national shipping industry.

State of play in technology and legal framework of alternative marine fuels and renewable energy systems: a bibliometric analysis 替代海洋燃料和可再生能源系统的技术和法律框架现状:文献计量学分析

ABSTRACT Various endeavors are undertaken by the maritime industry, academia, and policy-makers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These include the search for feasible technologies that could be used onboard merchant vessels and are propelled by international legal and social initiatives. To this end, this study aimed to critically analyze the research trends pertaining to the active methods of reducing the negative environmental impact of shipping. The research is focused on alternative fuels and renewable energy systems with respect to the related policy-making and existing legal framework. Therefore, a bibliometric approach was applied to a sample of 234 scientific papers indexed in the SCI-EXPANDED in Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection. The results indicate that the scientific efforts were made more on alternative fuels, while renewable energy sources only recently became a popular research subject. Moreover, the environmental benefits of prospective technologies are more investigated than their financial aspects. The research effort on alternative maritime fuels was made in parallel with the legal one, both aiming to combat global climate change and magnifying each other.

Articulating intermodal chains through short-sea shipping: a method for assessing the performance of East African ports 通过短海运铰接多式联运链:一种评估东非港口绩效的方法

ABSTRACT The location of East African ports, along with difficulties in building and maintaining effective road corridors, has led to the consideration of intermodal transport through Short Sea Shipping (SSS) as an alternative for load transport. However, this potential solution is dependent on the ports as consolidation load centres and on the configuration of transport networks. This paper provides a method to evaluate the performance of East African ports in their role as a hub for the intermodal chain. Specifically, through an assessment of port indicators ad hoc, the method jointly evaluates the performance of the hinterland’s capillary haul and port operations. The proposed indicators aggregately consider attributes of time and cost and compare competitiveness for ports’ current status with standard parameters. The application of the method to East African ports reveals that their tariff structure should be adapted to the operative reality of SSS. In addition, the loading time has not proven to be as determinant as the pre-berthing waiting time in the effectiveness of the intermodal chains.

Characterizing the evolution of the Yangtze River Delta multi-port system using compositional data techniques 用成分数据技术表征长三角多港口系统的演变特征

ABSTRACT The Yangtze River Delta multi-port system (YMPS) receives increasing attention due to its relevance in world trade and excellent competitiveness in the container traffic market. To insight into the development pattern of YMPS, this paper proposes a method that combines the Hierarchical Clustering with compositional data (CoDa) exploratory tools (i.e., biplot and dendrogram) to explore the temporal and spatial evolution of the YMPS from 1992 to 2019. CoDa describes parts of some whole (i.e., frequency and percentage), conveying relative information in the ratios between its components. Container traffic share in a multi-port region is typical CoDa. Traditional statistical approaches to CoDa could lead to spurious correlations and erroneous conclusions. However, using suitable CoDa techniques, such as the centered log-ratio (clr) transformation, can effectively avoid these misinterpretations. The novel method can simultaneously find the temporal and spatial characteristics. The findings indicate that the development of the YMPS has gone through four stages and the evolution of the YMPS is characterized by a tendency towards a ‘multi-core development’ and faces a differentiated pattern of ‘peripheral port challenges’. The analysis further improves the port system’s evolutionary model and explains the underlying reason for the YMPS development. CoDa techniques also provide a new perspective for the temporal and spatial evolution of the transport discipline.

Second-hand vessel valuation: an extreme gradient boosting approach 二手船舶估值:一种极端梯度提升方法

ABSTRACT We investigate the efficacy of the Extreme Gradient boosting (XGBoost) machine learning technique in desktop vessel valuation and compare it to benchmark models consisting of a LASSO regression, a Generalized Additive Model (GAM) and a Generalized Linear Model (GLM). Our data consists of of 1880 sale and purchase transactions for Handysize bulkers between January 1996 and September 2019. Using vessel-specific and market variables, we find that the XGBoost algorithm outperforms the GAM approach in its ability to model complex non-linear relationships between multiple variables. When fitting the XGBoost model, we find that vessel age, timecharter rates and fuel efficiency are the most important variables. Our findings are important for investors, shipowners and ship financiers in the maritime industry.

Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Costing for assessing maritime transport: a comprehensive literature review 生命周期评估和生命周期成本评估海上运输:一个全面的文献综述

ABSTRACT The maritime transport sector is nowadays an object of interest for the scientific community and shipping companies due to its embodied environmental and economic impacts. In this context, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) methods can provide support in obtaining useful information through a detailed analysis of both the environmental and economic performances related to the whole life cycle of maritime means of transport. Based on this, the scope of this study is to provide a comprehensive literature review focused on the analysis of scientific articles in which the environmental and economic impacts of maritime means of transport have been assessed using the LCA and LCC methods. In particular, this study analyses 77 scientific articles in which the above-mentioned methods, as well as integrated approaches, have been applied. The analysis is performed using three review methods: bibliometric, network, and systematic analysis. The results outline the state of the art connected to the research area, as well as identifying the main scientific evidence and the availability of life cycle inventory data. Furthermore, methodological and practical issues are discussed through a critical analysis. This article is a revised and expanded version of a paper entitled “Assessing maritime transport through LCA and LCC: a literature review” presented at “IX Convegno dell’Associazione Rete Italiana di LCA”, Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy), 9-11th December 2020.

ABSTRACT Drawing on the social exchange theory, the objective of this study is to examine employees’ perceptions of cultural differences of container shipping companies and its impact on job performance. We also examined the role of the leadership in the relationship between cultural differences and job performance. Survey data collected from 740 employees of container shipping companies in six different countries including UK, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Mainland China, and Taiwan. A hierarchical regression analysis was conducted. Results indicated that transformational leadership and national cultural differences with respect to uncertainty avoidance, collectivism, and long-term orientation positively influenced job performance, whereas national cultural differences with respect to power distance and masculinity negatively influence job performance. Specifically, this research finds that transformational leadership plays a moderating role on the relationships between national culture differences and job performance. Implications for theory and practices were discussed.

Risk assessment of accidental oil release in a coastal region: the são paulo case study 沿海地区意外漏油风险评估:圣保罗案例研究

ABSTRACT The Port of Santos is the most relevant port in the Southern Hemisphere and has been undergoing continuous expansion of its activities. This work aims to analyze globally the contexts related to the policy and actions of coastal protection against oil spill, as a contribution to the proposal of an integrated risk management tool for oil spills in the coastal zone. The methodology includes the bibliographic review and synthesis of the current state of knowledge, inventory of port activities and related environmental aspects, and the use of quantitative and qualitative methods to perform systemic risk assessment. Factors that contribute to risk are identified, the disaster paradigms (Hazard-Vulnerability-Risk) are assessed for five elements exposed to risk (Port activities; Mangrove; Surrounding communities; Tourist activity; Estuary, beaches and coastal dunes), and the global risk of oil spill in the coastal zone of Port of Santos was assessed. The global assessment of the risk revealed a medium risk (R = 0.69). In terms of distributed assessment considering separately the five elements, a low risk was found for Surrounding communities (0.42) and Estuary, beaches and coastal dunes (0.28), but the other three elements revealed high risk (1.0).

Container flow template planning in seaport railway terminal with on-dock rails 码头铁路码头集装箱流模板规划

ABSTRACT With the construction of on-dock rails, the terminal has become an interface between the maritime transport network and the railway transport network. Terminal operators are facing some new challenges like more complicated terminal operations and the scarcity of storage spaces. To address this issue, the managers should improve the operation efficiency of terminals by adjusting the yard templates and equipment deployment plan, which has not been well studied. To fill this gap, we study the transfer flow template planning problem in seaport railway terminals, and a multi-objective model that integrates the decisions on flow volume, yard template, and equipment deployment plan is proposed. Then, a group of numerical experiments is conducted using Ningbo Beilun Container Terminal as an example to analyze the effect of different management objectives, the pattern of yard template, and the influence of handling capacities. The results show that the optimized flow template performs well when using maximizing throughput as the primal objective. It also reports that stacking imported containers in the blocks near the seaside could help to reduce the operation cost and time consumption of the terminal. Moreover, the location of on-dock rails shows a significant influence on the yard template.

Maritime services location decisions—an empirical analysis and implications 海事服务选址决策——实证分析及其启示

ABSTRACT Maritime services prefer to locate in places where factors indicating the business environment, such as its tax and legal systems, are attractive. However, when there are competing regions to choose from, it is important to understand the impact of each of these factors at each alternative location and whether the negative impacts of one factor may be offset by the positive impacts of other factors. This study analyzes the preferences of maritime services selecting from three potential business locations in Asia (Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore) and the possibility of factor substitution. A stated preference survey is designed to collect the choices of industry leaders facing five major factor options, and discrete choice models are applied to analyze the alternative- and company-specific impacts of these factors. The estimated alternative-specific parameters are consistent with the socioeconomic and legal backgrounds of the three locations, and the company-specific parameters indicate that it is not necessary for maritime services to be located near their clients, namely, shipowners. Finally, the factor trade-off analysis can help each location to identify possible policy changes that may improve its competitiveness.
