Introduction. A proliferation-inducing ligand is a membrane binding protein that represents one of the main survival factors for immature, naive and activated B-cells, and is involved in the global immune response. The objective of this study was to determine whether plasma levels of a proliferation-inducing ligand may be used to assess the proliferation of B-lymphocytes in patients with bacterial infections, B-cell malignancies and autoimmune inflammatory disorders. Material and Methods. The study included 91 patients divided into three groups and 30 blood donors assigned to the control group. Group 1 included 34 patients with bacterial infections confirmed by microbiology and/or radiology diagnostic tests; group 2 included 32 patients with B-cell malignancies; and group 3 included 25 patients with autoimmune inflammatory diseases. All plasma samples were assayed for a proliferation-inducing ligand using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The differences between groups were examined by one-way analysis of variance test and post hoc analysis. Results. One way analysis of variance test showed a statistically significant difference in concentrations of a proliferation-inducing ligand in the examined groups. The highest mean value of a proliferation-inducing ligand was found in patients with established bacterial infections (x = 8,294 ng/ml). Post hoc analysis showed that a proliferation-inducing ligand levels in the plasma samples of patients with bacterial infections were significantly higher than in healthy controls, and patients with hematological and autoimmune diseases, respectively. Conclusion. B-cell proliferation was increased in patients with bacterial infections in regard to patients with other disorders. Therefore, a proliferationinducing ligand can be used to differentiate bacterial infections from other inflammatory disorders and may be helpful in decision making whether to start antibiotic treatment or not.

Introduction. Dermoid cysts are benign developmental skin growths that can occur in any part of the body. Dermoid cysts of the head and neck account for 7% of all cysts, and are most frequently located near the lateral aspect of the eyebrow. They are rarely found in the oral cavity, accounting for 0.01% of all oral cavity cysts. Case Report. A 15-years-old patient was referred to our Clinic due to a growth in the mouth. Clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging showed a clearly demarcated, oval, cystic growth in the midline sublingual region. Intraoral incision, typical for frenectomy, with cyst excision was performed. Histopathological findings suggested a dermoid cyst. Conclusion. Dermoid cysts of the oral cavity are very rare; they grow slowly and when they reach certain dimensions, they interfere with chewing, swallowing, and lead to progressive breathing difficulty. Dermoid cysts should be included in the differential diagnosis of sublingual mass. Magnetic resonance imaging provides complete information about the localization, size, and content of the growth and contributes significantly to the decision on the surgical approach.

Introduction. This paper presents the results of a research conducted among senior high school students in northern Kosovo and Metohija on their knowledge about sexually transmitted infections, emphasizing their awareness and sources of information, as well as their sexual behavior and use of contraceptives. Material and Methods. The survey of senior high school students was done using a previously prepared anonymous questionnaire which was followed by statistical processing of fully completed questionnaires. Results. The research included students aged 17 to 19; 63% were females and 37% males; 35.8% were sexually active. The correct definition of sexually transmitted infections was identified by 49%. School was the source of information on these infections for 45.6% of students and biology class for 45.7%. There were 40.6% sexually active male respondents and 33.0% of female (on average, 18 years old). Of the surveyed students of both sexes, 40.6% became sexually active at the age of 17. Condom use was reported by 49% of respondents of both sexes, whereas 50.8% of sexually active students always used condoms. There were 38.7% (38.9% girls, 38.4% boys) of students who used condoms for protection against sexually transmitted infections, and 58.1% of them personally decided whether to use them. Conclusion. The majority of our respondents were able to identify the correct definition of sexually transmitted infections, and they most often heard of the human immunodeficiency virus/ acquired immune deficiency syndrome. School was their most common source of information, biology class, and a considerable number were informed about this issue on the Internet. The majority of sexually active girls did not use any contraceptives. School curricula and parent-child relationships should have a greater impact on the youth's awareness of reproductive health.

Introduction. Progress in the field of cancer treatment has led to increased survival rate of cancer patients. Chemotherapy and surgical treatment may be the consequence of decreased fertility in both genders. Fertility Preservation. Some of the prominent techniques for fertility preservation, cryopreservation of gametes and embryos, are efficient and safe techniques in clinical practice, while cryopreservation of gonadal tissue and cells is considered experimental, and it is not used in everyday practice yet. Conclusion. Timely and complete information about the effects of cancer treatment on fertility, as well as information about the potential techniques for fertility preservation, should be available to all patients.

SummaryIntroduction. Inter-professional education is the first step towards the effective collaborative practice of future health care workers and one of the prerequisites for the highest quality health care. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the readiness for interprofessional education among medical science students. Material and Methods. The research was conducted as a descriptive cross sectional study by surveying 406 students of five study profiles at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Novi Sad. The Serbian version of The Readiness for Inter-professional Learning Scale and questionnaire on sociodemographic data were used as research instruments. The Readiness for Inter-professional Learning Scale comprises a total of 19 items grouped into two sub-scales: “team work, collaboration and shared learning” and “role and responsi -bilities”. The methods of descriptive and inferential statistics were used, and statistically significant values were considered significant at the p <0.05 level. Results. The mean the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale total score was 73.9, which indicates that students are generally ready for shared learning. The highest scores, that is, greater readiness for inter-professional learning was among physiotherapist students, female students and those who had previously completed secondary medical school. Medical students had significantly more negative attitudes towards this educational strategy. Conclusion. Despite the observed differences, attitudes of the majority of students in relation to all study profiles indicate their readiness to accept inter-professional education.

The human brain accounts for about 2% of the total body weight, but it consumes about 15% of cardiac output and about 20% of the total body energy at rest [1]. The neurovascular coupling in the brain is a mechanism that increases the blood flow in the part of the brain where neurons are the most active [1]. If, for whatever reason, the blood flow drops below the threshold and there is a loss of ionic homeostasis and anoxic depolarization, consequent neuronal necrosis, i.e. brain infarction develops. Complete arrest of blood supply, or inadequate supply of neurons with glucose and oxygen, leads to metabolic and neuronal disorders (within 30 seconds), then functional disorders occur (after 1 minute), and finally (after 5 minutes) irreversible changes and neuronal death occur; this leads to brain infarction, which clinically manifests as ischemic stroke [2]. If the flow of oxygenated blood is re-established quickly enough, the neuronal damage is reversible.

Introduction. Some patients with clinical symptoms and signs of acute myocardial and coronary artery occlusion have atypical electrocardiographic presentations - ST elevation myocardial infarction equivalents. Rapid recognition of these patterns is imperative, because the condition requires prompt reperfusion therapy following actual guidelines. De Winter pattern. Diagnostic criteria are: tall, prominent, symmetrical T-waves in the precordial leads, upsloping ST segment depression > 1 mm at the J-point in the precordial leads, absence of ST elevation in the precordial leads, ST segment elevation (0.5 mm - 1 mm) in aVR. ST Elevation in aVR. Electrocardiographic criteria include ST segment elevation in aVR ≥ 1 mm, ST segment elevation in aVR ≥ V1, and diffuse ST segment depression in lateral leads. Wellens syndrome. Wellens syndrome describes deeply inverted or biphasic T-waves in leads V2 - V3, highly specific for significant stenosis of the left anterior descending artery. Posterior infarction. Posterior infarction is confirmed with ST segment depression ≥ 0,5 mm in leads V1 - 3 and ST segment elevation ≥ 0.5 mm in posterior leads (V7 - V9). Conclusion. There are many electrocardiographic patterns that physicians should promptly recognize as clinical myocardial infarction with ST segment elevation equivalents in order to perform urgent reperfusion therapy for better prognosis and survival in these patients.

SummaryIntroduction. The most recent literature data and studies have rec - ommended the middle gluteal muscle or the ventrogluteal side as the site for the application of intramuscular injection. Although it has been recommended for many years because of its many advantages it is rarely used in the clinical practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of application of intramuscular injection and the level of nurses’ of knowledge on how to give injections at the ventrogluteal site. Material and Methods. This study was conduct - ed as an observational, analytical cross-sectional study at two health - care institutions of different medical care levels on a sample of 96 nurses. The Questionnaire on the level of knowledge concerning the Ventrogluteal Site for Intramuscular Injection was used as a research instrument. Results. A quarter (28.1%) of the nurses knew that the ventrogluteal site or the middle gluteal muscle was the recommend - ed site for intramuscular injection, while in their clinical practice only 20.8% of the nurses used it. The average score on the Questionnaire on the level of knowledge concerning the Ventrogluteal Site for In - tramuscular Injection was 8.8 ± 4.1 (SD), the maximum score being 22. Conclusion. The results of the study show that the ventrogluteal site for administering intramuscular injections is rarely used, and the level of knowledge which the nurses from the study sample have shown about the procedure and the advantages of using the ventro - gluteal site for intramuscular injections is rather low.

Introduction. Conventional complete dentures are still the first choice in the treatment of completely edentulous patients. Dissatisfaction among complete denture wearers is not uncommon. The goal of this study was to determine the causes of patients' dissatisfaction with complete dentures. Material and Methods. A total of sixty patients participated in this study, 36 females (60%) and 24 males (40%). Twenty-five patients received their first complete dentures, and fourteen of them had previously worn complete dentures. In patients receiving complete dentures, there are many factors contributing to their adaptation, acceptance and feeling discomfort while wearing them. Conclusion. Our study showed that patients' satisfaction was not directly related with the quality of complete dentures.
