No Brasil, quando falamos sobre desigualdade, costumamos associar o termo à má distribuição de renda entre a população ou então ao desequilíbrio de riquezas entre certas regiões e estado. Um tipo de desigualdade, porém, é constantemente negligenciado: a desigualdade de investimento na cultura. Este artigo busca apresentar ao leitor o caráter concentrador da Lei Rouanet que, baseada na lógica mercantilista, privilegia de forma desequilibrada as metrópoles Rio e São Paulo no fomento de projetos culturais.

The aim of this paper is to investigate forms of resistance among women that conduct healing and health practices, which consists of alternative methods to the hegemonic western medicine imposed on bodies by the coloniality of power, knowledge and being. This analysis is based on ethnographic research, with maes de santo, in two terreiros de Linha Cruzada, in Rio Grande do Sul, and with benzedeiras from the Movimento Aprendizes da Sabedoria (MASA) in Parana. We propose to discuss, from what these women evoke and carry out, ways of know how that show ruptures to the western-patriarchal model of knowledge production about bodies and health. Their practices and knowledge of healing, stimulated in these two ethnographic contexts, produce intense relations with humans and non-humans (plants, water, earth, animals, orixas, popular saints, monks, etc.), in which different entities act as intensities and powers relational. Benzedeiras and maes de santo demand the recognition of their religious and healing practices that have historically been discriminated, censored, monitored and repressed by the State, as in cases where Afro-religious were persecuted and the benzedeiras held on charges of carrying out illegal healing activities.

The article addresses the processes of neoliberal subjectivation in the field of punishment and criminalization. We first reconstruct M. Foucault's argument regarding the transformations promoted by neoliberalism in the context of punishment and its correlated modality of subjectivation. We argue that his prognosis regarding the future of normalizing institutions, such as the prison, turned out to be, in part, historically mistaken. We then proceed to explore the central argument of the article, namely, that in the past three decades, political technologies and forms of subjectivation in the sphere of punishment have been marked by reciprocal support between neoliberal and other disciplinary and sovereign mechanisms. To this end, we conduct a theoretical-analytical discussion based on empirical examples from countries such as the United States and Brazil. We aim to contribute, thus, from the sociology of punishment, to the contemporary discussion regarding the confluence between neoliberalism and authoritarianism.

Although it did not have systematic theoretical treatment on the part of Pierre Bourdieu, the neoliberal issue goes through the whole of his work especially from the 1990’s. This article seeks to demonstrate that his considerations about neoliberalism were related to the constitution of a subjectivity of political resistance around his conformation as a public intellectual. To this end, the most significant experiences of public engagement mobilized by this sociologist were articulated to his addressing the neoliberal issue. Finally, will be realized an interpretation of the meaning of this subjectivity of resistance against the neoliberalism. The critical incorporation of this theoretical and political repertoire can inspire us for new sociological actions, in the light of current demands and commitments.

In the decades of 1990, 2000 and 2010 Brazil attracted the attention of the international literary circuit. On several occasions the country has been invited to participate in fairs and literary festivals as guest of honor (Guadalajara Book Fair, Paris Book Fair, Bologna Book Fair, etc.). However, Brazil's participation in the Frankfurt Book Fair twice as guest of honor (1994 - 2013) constituted the most privileged moments of the country's exhibition on the edition world stage. Even though it is an eminently commercial arena, Frankfurt is much more than that, with important symbolic implications as well. This article aims to compare the lists of writers officially invited by the Ministry of Culture in the two editions of the Fair in which Brazil was invited of honor (in 1994 and 2013), also comparing the organizing committees and the budgets of each event.

From old and new epidemics to ensuring the quality of life, from economic development to the preservation of the planet, from poverty to redistribution and social justice, the term that groups these concerns is sustainability. One of the pillars of sustainability is the so-called adequate and healthy food, which encompasses a complex of dimensions, from the macro-relationships of production and distribution of goods to the community social micro-relationships and the recognition of people as political subjects. In this sense, this concept of sustainability presupposes a theoretical and practical debate on social justice, which will be developed in this article. We will address, initially, the socio-cultural aspects of food, in reference to the construction of cultural identities and the identification of social inequalities, which are expressed in the concept of adequate and healthy food found in the National Policy on Food and Nutrition (PNAN, in Portuguese). This policy seeks to articulate food, health and quality of life having as principle the adequate and quality food understood as a human right. Finally, we will reflect on social justice based on the articulation between food policies and social justice theories, focusing on the debate proposed by Nancy Fraser.

This article analyses transformations of quality standards in Brazil namely, the Food Identity and Quality standards. Since the 2000s, Brazilian legislation has followed changes in the global food market in which sanitary and labelling issues are given priority in food quality definitions. Unlike other studies that analyze problems in standard compliance, this article problematizes the very definition of these standards. Our sources are reports and technical regulations of the National Agency of Sanitary Surveillance and the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology; newspaper articles and food industry’s periodicals; consumers associations’ publications and market reports. These changes in quality standards mainly favored the opening of new market niches for industrially processed food, as well as the market for ingredients and chemical additives to serve this sector. They also meant the loss in nutritional quality in products and they have resulted in criticism from consumer groups and health care professionals who are attentive to products that emerge from such changes. We conclude that the analysis of these transformations in quality definitions allow us to understand not only how new products and health claims have gained institutional legitimacy and what interests such standards serve but also how the loss of nutritional quality in food is a serious issue allowed by the legislation itself.

African studies have had a profoundly political history in Brazil that shows that in this country, such as elsewhere, studying Africa is not a natural fact, but depends on political, geostrategic and economic interests as well as quite a degree of intellectual engineering. This article explores the originality of African studies in Brazil when compared with the Global North and addresses a set of challenges and bottlenecks that derive form the institutional fragility of such studies and the present adverse political climate in most of the Brics countries – Brazil, South Africa and India. In the last part the article expands on new paths that should be trailed for the development and consolidation of the South-South connection in African studies as seen from Brazil.

Os conceitos de coetaneidade e pos-colonialidade referem-se a movimentos de ampliacao das perspectivas a partir das quais as Ciencias Sociais abordam o continente africano contemporaneamente, suscitando criticas ao carater eurocentrico de seu referencial mais classico. Experiencias de pesquisa em contextos africanos, sobretudo em Paises Africanos de Lingua Oficial Portuguesa (PALOP), sao um componente significativo do processo de internacionalizacao da pesquisa e da pos-graduacao em Ciencias Sociais e produz aportes fundamentais para a consolidacao da Educacao das Relacoes Etnico-Raciais (ERER) nas instituicoes de ensino brasileiras, afirmando-se, assim, a relevância da tematica proposta. Este dossie reune artigos dedicados a compreensao da contemporaneidade do continente africano tanto por meio de analises de processos historicos, a luz de novos conceitos e abordagens das Ciencias Sociais, quanto da rediscussao de determinados pressupostos teorico-metodologicos a luz de novas questoes, problemas, conflitos e praticas sociais. Para apresenta-lo, este artigo percorre a construcao e as principais criticas aos dois conceitos que o estruturam: coetaneidade e pos-colonialidade. Experiencias de pesquisa em contextos africanos, sobretudo em Paises Africanos de Lingua Oficial Portuguesa (PALOP), sao um componente significativo do processo de internacionalizacao da pesquisa e da pos-graduacao em Ciencias Sociais e produz aportes fundamentais para a consolidacao da Educacao das Relacoes Etnico-Raciais (ERER) nas instituicoes de ensino brasileiras, afirmando-se, assim, a relevância da tematica proposta. Este dossie reune artigos dedicados a compreensao da contemporaneidade do continente africano tanto por meio de analises de processos historicos, a luz de novos conceitos e abordagens das Ciencias Sociais, quanto da rediscussao de determinados pressupostos teorico-metodologicos a luz de novas questoes, problemas, conflitos e praticas sociais. Para apresenta-lo, este artigo percorre a construcao e as principais criticas aos dois conceitos que o estruturam: coetaneidade e pos-colonialidade.
