This entire interdisciplinary concept and the related research began by seeing a photograph of King Esarhaddon’s stele found at Zincirli (Sam’al), in Turkey. It shows two eccentric circles in the sky, a circle inside a larger one, touching each other above (Figure 1 M–N). This is a rare combination in real life and not really a decorative motif. The photo made an instant impression on the author that it had been a design commemorating an annular–total solar eclipse seen there. A long search in books and articles yielded many similar “records.” The more interesting ones are tabulated in Figure 1. At some of them we inserted a similar real configuration, usually from the nearest such eclipse, computed by the WinEclipse software.

The role of Civil Society Organizations in development has been reinforced in recent times by the emphasis on participatory development and democracy. In this regard, they are seen as the gate-keepers of our polity. In Nigeria’s grand design for good governance, the populace assign to them enormous responsibility to take development and democracy down to the people. Unfortunately, this is not backed up with adequate infrastructure, knowledge of democracy, development and resources. Their role is also circumscribed by an over-centralized state and persistent top down approaches to development. While the state does not fully understand which types of engagement with Civil Societies would work on the one hand, Civil Societies on the other do not fully perceive the importance of a partnership with the state. Their proposed involvement in voter education and mobilization of the electorate during elections provide another opportunity to experiment with Civil Societies’ participation in governance. This initiative was specifically designed to support the entrenchment of participatory democracy and drive it to a sustainable level in Nigeria with Civil societies mobilizing and sensitizing the electorate to increase voter registration and ensure a free and fair election in 2015.

The so-called Thirty Years War refers to a series of wars in Europe in the seventeenth century fueled by religious, territorial and dynastic rivalries which brought economic and demographic difficulties to that region and their people. In Bohemia, as in other parts of Europe, there was a real desertification of rural areas in this period, causing Jews to migrate from neighboring countries due to their recognized experience in the development of businesses in general. Jewish immigrants spoke a “German Jewish” language, which could be described as German with several expressions in Yiddish and, once a new statute for the Jews was created in the late nineteenth century, they moved to urban centers where they sought assimilation through socio-cultural ambience at big cities. The story of Franz Kafka’s family is the story of most Jewish families who settled there at that time. Josef Kafka, who was the first to adopt this surname, which means “jackdaw” in Czech, married in 1802 and one of his sons, Jacob Kafka, became the father of Hermann Kafka. Hermann settled down with few financial resources, and shortly after marrying Julie Löwy in 1882 he opened a fabric store that thrived thanks to his hard dedication to work. Shortly after, Hermann successfully expanded his business. Hermann established himself thanks to his commitment, sacrifice and perseverance. Franz was the first child born of this marriage, in Prague, in 1883. Two more boys who died young and three daughters who died later during the Nazi holocaust were also born of this marriage. Hermann is described as an energetic man with strong temperament and Julie as a sweet and serene woman, always willing to mitigate her husband’s strong temperament. In addition to Yiddish, Hermann’s children spoke German, which was his family’s native tongue in South Bohemia. Besides German and Yiddish, Franz also spoke Czech in an attempt to broaden his local communication. Based on the fact that they were Jews and having the habit of speaking German, Franz and his family were seen as the minority of minorities, making it difficult for Franz to connect with other inhabitants of Prague. In this context, Franz was exposed to the nationalistic feelings of Prague residents which, when combined with anti-Semitic prejudices, eventually led to street demonstrations against the Jews. Curiously, although he belonged to a family of Jews, Franz did not attend to the synagogue because he did not see himself to be sufficiently involved in the Jewish religion.1,2

As consumers of healthcare we experience varying levels of care delivery and even treatment modalities which may vary by socioeconomic stratification even amongst those that have health insurance. Documented research in Cardiovascular Medicine has shown that treatment may differ by race, ethnicity, and by the zip code in which one live, work and play.1 Studies have also revealed significant mortality resulting from social conditions such as low education, racial segregation, low social support, income inequality and individual/area poverty.2

An earthquake disaster is the most terrifying disaster in Nepal, but Nepal is no limited to just earthquakes; there are also disasters such as floods, landslides, fires, avalanches, windstorms, hailstorms, lightning, glacier lake outburst floods, epidemics, droughts and so on. There have been many occurrences of earthquake disasters in Nepal that have caused heavy casualty losses and physical property damages, adversely affecting the overall development of the country. Nepal’s proximity to earthquake hazards is mainly due to her young and fragile geology. Haphazard and unplanned settlements and poor construction practice are the other reasons that have made her highly vulnerable to earthquake impacts. Nepal may have encountered many earthquakes throughout history; it has the record for the greatest loss of life dating back to the 12th century. Since then Nepal has encountered 16 major earthquakes, including the devastating Gorkha-Nepal earthquake of 25 April 2015 (Figure 1). Abstract

“Should political influence in the decision–making processes of international courts and tribunals be anticipated?”

The terms ‘political considerations’; ‘political influence’ and ‘political interference’ mean different things to different people, so clarification of the meaning of these terms for the purpose of this article is useful. The most passive of the three terms is ‘political considerations’ because it connotes a legitimate and appropriate evaluation of the policies and principles of the actors be they states or non-state actors, affected by the outcome. Whereas ‘political influence’ suggests a more intrusive, yet not necessarily aggressive act of asserting power in an effort to affect a result. The term ‘political interference’ on the other hand suggests an aggressive act, which may be illegitimate, by imposing upon those invested with legal authority to exercise judicial power in a way that will achieve their desired outcomes, often irrespective of the merits of the case.
