ABSTRACT Controlling insect pests still relies on the extensive usage of generic and established methods, such as pesticides, which utilise broad spectrum chemicals or toxins persisting in the environment and targeting non-pest insect species. Therefore, more effective and environmental friendly approaches are needed to counteract these damaging effects. Since a laser can be remotely directed to neutralise undesirable targets, this approach could be highly promising for controlling insect pests in a selective and ecofriendly fashion. In this study, we present a laser system automated by machine vision for neutralising and influencing the behaviour of insect pests. By performing experiments on domiciliary cockroaches, Blattella germanica, we demonstrate that our approach enables the immediate and selective neutralisation of individual insects at a distance up to 1.2 m. We further show the possibility to deter cockroaches by training them not to hide under a dark shelter through aversive heat conditioning with a low power-laser. Parameters of our prototype system can readily be tuned for applications in various situations and on different pest species like mosquitoes, locusts, and caterpillars. The prospect of this study is to pursue the creation of a standalone, safe for the environment, compact, low-cost, and energy-efficient device system for pest control.

ABSTRACT Recent observations and a review of historical collections and literature have revealed that the diversity of scarab beetles in the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of South China is substantially higher than previously reported. In this latest account, nine identified species are reported from this area in the Rutelinae subfamily, within the genera Adoretus, Anomala, Mimela, Pseudosinghala and Popillia. The subfamily Dynastinae appears to be locally represented by two species within the complex oriental genus Xylotrupes and the more widespread genus Alissonotum, respectively. With the exception of A. rubripes rubripes, P. mutans and X. siamensis, which are observed regularly and in reasonable numbers, all the other species are recorded very infrequently and often as single individuals. Thus, while the biodiversity potential of the region is relatively high, most species appear to be under threat of local extinction. This can be attributed mainly to the rapid habitat degradation, use of pesticides and extreme light pollution that are currently occurring in this SAR.

ABSTRACT Tropical Indonesia has a rich biota. The fauna of stag beetles (Lucanidae) is relatively well understood in Indonesia, with numerous endemic species, including on the island of Java. Gnaphaloryx (Lucaninae: Dorcini) is a small genus of stag beetles mainly distributed in the Oriental Region. A new lucanid species, Gnaphaloryx rectus Yamamoto sp. nov., is described from West Java, western Indonesia. This new species can be easily distinguished from the known Gnaphaloryx in the large males as it possesses symmetrical and rather linear mandibles, very weakly developed cephalic horn, weakly produced canthi, and narrower 2nd and 3rd costae on the elytra in comparison with the 1st one. We provide a checklist of all species and subspecies of the genus with their known distributions. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:738C1CA7-8D54-46C4-90D6-97087356528F http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:211DA3A1-A08C-4291-BDC7-BAB3F69034C5

ABSTRACT Asias halodendri (Pallas) is a polyphagous xylophage native to Asia and the biggest threat to Tetraena mongolica Maxim extinction. In this study, we attempted to locate the site of pheromone emission in A. halodendri. Different body parts, which included the wing, thorax, abdomen, and genital segments, of male and female A. halodendri were used in the olfactometry and electroantennographic experiments. Results showed that the male and female responses were stronger when the abdomen or abdominal extracts were applied as stimuli than when other body parts were used. Thus, the pheromone production system in A. halodendri is presumably located at the abdominal region.

ABSTRACT Taxonomic revision of the genus Cueta Navás from Pakistan is presented by redescribing four of the five species, i.e., C. facile, C. infensa, and C. minervae in this country. Cueta omana syn. nov. is proposed as a junior synonym of Cueta thaliae, a poorly known species, only documented from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Cueta infensa is reported as a new record for Pakistan. The holotype photographs of Cueta infensa and Cueta omana are also presented. ABSTRACT Phylogenetic relationships among genera and species of the leafhopper tribe Deltocephalini, with particular focus on the large genus Maiestas, were reconstructed using a data set of 32 species representing eight genera plus five outgroups, three nuclear gene fragments (28S rDNA, Wingless, H3) and one mitochondrial (COI) gene fragment using maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI). The ML and BI results are well resolved with areas of incongruence restricted to a few branches receiving low support in one or both analyses within a large clade comprising species of Maiestas. The results consistently support the monophyly of Deltocephalini, but indicate that some genera previously defined based on morphology, including Deltocephalus, Maiestas and Polyamia, are paraphyletic.

ABSTRACT In the present study, we described the histological and anatomical studies of the digestive canal and excretory system of Mylabris cernyi with light and scanning electron microscopies. The digestive canal is divided into three parts: the foregut, the midgut, and the hindgut. The foregut includes a pharynx, an oesophagus, a proventriculus and an oesophageal valve. There are the muscle layer, a thin epithelium, and the intima lining in the parts of the foregut. The midgut is well developed and has a transversely wrinkled shape. This epithelial layer of columnar cells is invaginated to form large and deep folds of epithelial tissue. The hindgut has pyloric valve, ileum, colon, and rectum. In the cell layers of the hindgut, there is an inner lining of the intima of cuticula, an epithelial layer and a muscle layer. There are 6 Malpighian tubules which are attached between the midgut and the hindgut. The results will help guide the development of new strategies for managing this pest. Because knowing the fine structure of the digestive and excretory system of this species is important in terms of forming the basis for the studies to be carried out in agricultural control against this species.
