ABSTRACT Insect pollinators in agroecosystem are not only associated with crop plants but they also interact with weed flora growing there. In this study, the role of four Asteraceae weed flora: Ageratum conyzoides, Bidens pilosa, Caesulia axillaris and Tridax procumbens influencing pollinators’ diversity in three different land-use gradient, uncultivable land ecosystem , semi-cultivated land and cultivated land ecosystem is investigated in Terai Arc Landscape of Uttarakhand state in India. Total 29 species of pollinators belonging to 10 families of 3 orders were observed with these weed floras. Among pollinators Apis mellifera visited all four species, whereas weeds like T. procumbens and C. axillaris showed more association with hymenopteran pollinators. The floral rewards like total number of pollen grains per flower and total sugar concentration (TSC)/ flower (µg/mL) were analysed by principal component analyses depicts that T. procumbens and C. axillaris are potential producers. Weather conditions had an influence, where minimum relative humidity (Pearson correlation, r = 0.88), minimum temperature (r = 0.86), rainfall (r = 0.68) and maximum temperature (r = 0.63) were favourable for the insect pollinators’ visitation during our study. This study demonstrates that all four Asteraceae weed species have the potential to supplement the diet of pollinators within agricultural ecosystem.

ABSTRACT Caterpillars of Thyrassia virescens (Hampson, 1892) were collected from a newly recorded host plant Cissus quadrangularis Linnaeus, 1767 (Vitaceae) in Chikaballapura district of Karnataka State in India from June to September 2021. Larvae were reared in room condition to study the life cycle. The total larval period was found to be 18–22 days with four instars. The pupal period was found to be 10–12 days. Parasitisation by Cotesia sp. (Braconidae: Hymenoptera) on the caterpillars of T. virescens has been documented for the first time. While there was no parasitisation occurred during the first generation, the second and third generations showed 93.3% and 18.18% parasitisation respectively. Notes on the identification features such as the male and female genitalia have been described. An interesting ‘parasitoid-guarding’ behaviour has been documented, in which the caterpillars seem to protect the parasitoid cocoon from hyper-parasitoids and other enemies until the emergence of parasitoid adult.

ABSTRACT The biological and ecological factors experienced across the lifespan by the bird hosts affect the seasonal dynamics of their ectoparasites. The seasonal population of Columbicola columbae which infests the domestic pigeon Columba livia domestica, in Egypt was studied across four seasons in Cairo, Egypt. 25 pairs (25 ♀ and 25 ♂) of Columba livia domestica were visually assessed for chewing lice infestation, twice a month for one year from March 1st 2019 to February 28th, 2020. Life stages (nymphs and adults) of C. columbae were represented across the four seasons. Environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity play a significant role in shaping the population dynamic of this ectoparasite. The intensity rate of C. columbae displayed the highest peak of 78.65 ± 15.28 in autumn, followed by 59.67 ± 20.58 in summer, 26.65 ± 16.66 in winter, and finally 18.65 ± 7.41 in spring. The infestation level of lice was much higher on females (93.64 ± 7.53) than males (81.40 ± 8.70) pigeons. The fluctuations in C. columbae population intensity on pigeons could be related to external environmental factors and host-related factors, which are affected by the season.

ABSTRACT Controlling insect pests still relies on the extensive usage of generic and established methods, such as pesticides, which utilise broad spectrum chemicals or toxins persisting in the environment and targeting non-pest insect species. Therefore, more effective and environmental friendly approaches are needed to counteract these damaging effects. Since a laser can be remotely directed to neutralise undesirable targets, this approach could be highly promising for controlling insect pests in a selective and ecofriendly fashion. In this study, we present a laser system automated by machine vision for neutralising and influencing the behaviour of insect pests. By performing experiments on domiciliary cockroaches, Blattella germanica, we demonstrate that our approach enables the immediate and selective neutralisation of individual insects at a distance up to 1.2 m. We further show the possibility to deter cockroaches by training them not to hide under a dark shelter through aversive heat conditioning with a low power-laser. Parameters of our prototype system can readily be tuned for applications in various situations and on different pest species like mosquitoes, locusts, and caterpillars. The prospect of this study is to pursue the creation of a standalone, safe for the environment, compact, low-cost, and energy-efficient device system for pest control.

ABSTRACT Recent observations and a review of historical collections and literature have revealed that the diversity of scarab beetles in the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of South China is substantially higher than previously reported. In this latest account, nine identified species are reported from this area in the Rutelinae subfamily, within the genera Adoretus, Anomala, Mimela, Pseudosinghala and Popillia. The subfamily Dynastinae appears to be locally represented by two species within the complex oriental genus Xylotrupes and the more widespread genus Alissonotum, respectively. With the exception of A. rubripes rubripes, P. mutans and X. siamensis, which are observed regularly and in reasonable numbers, all the other species are recorded very infrequently and often as single individuals. Thus, while the biodiversity potential of the region is relatively high, most species appear to be under threat of local extinction. This can be attributed mainly to the rapid habitat degradation, use of pesticides and extreme light pollution that are currently occurring in this SAR.

ABSTRACT Tropical Indonesia has a rich biota. The fauna of stag beetles (Lucanidae) is relatively well understood in Indonesia, with numerous endemic species, including on the island of Java. Gnaphaloryx (Lucaninae: Dorcini) is a small genus of stag beetles mainly distributed in the Oriental Region. A new lucanid species, Gnaphaloryx rectus Yamamoto sp. nov., is described from West Java, western Indonesia. This new species can be easily distinguished from the known Gnaphaloryx in the large males as it possesses symmetrical and rather linear mandibles, very weakly developed cephalic horn, weakly produced canthi, and narrower 2nd and 3rd costae on the elytra in comparison with the 1st one. We provide a checklist of all species and subspecies of the genus with their known distributions. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:738C1CA7-8D54-46C4-90D6-97087356528F http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:211DA3A1-A08C-4291-BDC7-BAB3F69034C5
