The topic of the article is at the junction of such topical areas of historical science as the history of mass sources and regional history. The subject of the study is the economy of the Kola Sami in the second half of the 18th century. The object is the statistical statements of 1764, 1784 and 1785. The first two statistical statements were introduced into scientific circulation relatively recently, and the third became known at the beginning of the 20th century. The analysis of these sources allowed us to identify some aspects of the economic development of the Sami people population of the county: the leading branches of the Kola Sami economy were fish and animal husbandry, the proportion of which could vary depending on natural and climatic conditions; the Kola Sami cannot be called traditional reindeer herders, since reindeer husbandry was represented in the form of a medium-sized cattle breeding farm, performing mainly food and transport functions; another subsidiary occupation was animal husbandry, which was not widespread due to the inability to keep cattle in large numbers; agriculture also did not play a big role in the economy of the Kola Sami, since natural conditions and a semi-nomadic lifestyle did not encourage them to this occupation.

The scientist’s archive is analyzed as a history and sociology of science phenomena on the example of the Vladimir Charnoluskiy’s archive, an ethnographer, best known as a Kola Saami’ researcher. The features of archives as memorial institutions are revealed, personal and official archives are compared. The archive as a metaphor (along with others –– trace, evidence) demonstrates the social dimension of science and the formation of the image of a scientist, as well as its additions and changes. A “model” of a standardized and competitive perception of science with the corresponding “actions” of archival materials is proposed. Archival evidence can supplement or change formed views –– individual facts, the perception of the image of a scientist in terms of research subjects, explanation of the facts and theoretical problems.

The article presents the second part of a comprehensive study of the book of memoirs by E. B. Khalezova as a work of non-fiction and a historical source. The goal is to show how the history of the family-related community of the Russian scientific intelligentsia is reconstructed in a memoir-autobiographical text. The significance of such works for the study of the history of the Russian family and the dynamics of family forms is determined. According to a number of literaryn characteristics, the work correlates with the family chronicle genre. It contains historical and biographical information about the Starynkevich and Borneman families, who were of noble origin. The history of parental and reproductive families is based on the biography of the prominent scientist I. D. Borneman-Starynkevich and the autobiography of her daughter. With all the differences, both families can be attributed to the type of “maternal family”. This source contains valuable information on the history of the families of the Russian intelligentsia. It also contributes to the understanding of how various communities called “family” change during a person's life and in the course of global and local historical processes.

The culture of the indigenous population of the Kola North is actively “exploited” in the image promotion of the region and the development of the souvenir industry. The features of the presentation and promotion of souvenirs with Saami symbols in the social network “VKontakte” are considered. The methods of virtual participant observation, content analysis of textual and visual material were used.

The paper for the first time allows us to consider the mention in the media of two state entities that never existed in reality, so-called Republic of Vologdache and the White Sea Republic. The author uses articles and notes in the US press for July – August 1918 as the main source. The study also contains the necessary information from some European media. The author comes to the conclusion that despite the relatively good awareness of the events in the North of Russia, most of the journalists could not correctly compare the available data, while many theses were invented. According to the author, this disinformation was unintentional, since the journalistic community conveyed information in such a way that the original message, although false, was in the context of real events.

The management of the Murmansk railway, in order to ensure the safety of construction, attracted various groups of guards in 1915–1916. The regulation of social relations between representatives of the security service and other construction participants (administrators, prisoners of war, workers, local residents, migrants) was based on regulatory documents. The text of the document that defined the rights and regulated action of protection is published in the article for the first time. The document entitled “Instructions for guards who work on the construction of the Murmansk Railway” is provided with the author's comments.
