This paper describes the nature of carbon and feed metals deposition on aged resid catalyst. A series of aged resid hydrotreating catalysts from a three stage expanded bed pilot plant has been studied using nuclear microphobe temperature programmed oxidation, solid state NMR spectroscopy and elemental analyses. These techniques have been used to characterize the relationship between activity functions and the carbonaceous and metal deposits.

The objective of our study is to segregate the effect of secondary porosity from the effect of total acid sites and acid strength of dealuminated Y zeolites on heavy oil cracking activity. Of particular importance here is to examine the effect of secondary pore mode on catalysis.

Iron and vanadium are among the major metal contaminantf found in typical petroleum-based refinery catalysts. A study was initiated to understand the interactions of iron and vanadium oxides on an alumina support subjected to high temperature calcination treatments. FCC catalyst regeneration, FCC SOx removal, and resid catalyst regeneration are three areas for which studies of iron-vanadium-ssupport interactions are desirable.

In this work, we have studied zeolite-oxide interaction in the solid state and have found that V and Mo are inserted in forms which remain to be determined. Thus, in the range 680-750 K the zeolite appears to accept levels of V or Mo corresponding to ratios R V2 O 5 = 0.05 and R M oO 3 = 0.075, without any modification of the lattice.

In this communication we discuss the surface chelistry and stability of Me 3 SnCo(CO) 4 in different forms of zeolite. The potential catalytic activity of the Co(CO) 4 moiety is of particular interest. The reactivity of this complex and the stability of Sn-Co bond under different conditions have been studied.

Foam as an injected fluid for enhanced oil recovery has shown promise, particularly in steamflooding. In addition, foam is effective as a barrier to gas coning in thin oil zone. this work unifies the two approaches presently accounting for oil-foam interactions : spreading behaviour and thin film stability. Study of the correspondences between stable pseudoemulsion films, negative entering coefficient and oil-tolerant foams. Stable pseudoemulsion films are essential to maintain oil-tolerant foams

Experimental data dealing with the interactions between certain microbial species and crude oils indicates that these interactions are selective and occur via biochemical pathways which can be characterized by the chemical composition of the initial crude oil and that of the end products. In the studies to be discussed in this paper, the microbial species used were thermophilic and/or thermoadapted microorganisms which thrive in harsh environments (e.g., pH, temperature, pressure, salinity). Crude oils chosen for biotreatment represented a wide range of oils, which varied from relatively light oils to heavy, high sulfur content oils. The crude oils used have also been distinguished in terms of their geological history, i.e., heavy, because they are immature or heavy, because they have been biodegraded. The significance of {open_quotes}biodegraded{close_quotes} vs. {open_quotes}biotreated{close_quotes} crude oil in MEOR will also be discussed.
