Abstract Government policy agendas in high-cost economies focus on manufacturing competitiveness promoting what they term High Value Manufacturing (HVM). HVM is seen as the solution to the problem of manufacturers in high-cost economies being outcompeted by those in low-cost economies. Despite the ubiquity of the term HVM, there is little academic engagement with it leaving HVM an under-theorized, emerging phenomenon lacking in academic legitimization. Our purpose is therefore to gain a ‘theoretical foothold’ to allow the phenomenon of HVM to be characterized. Policy documents from the UK and German governments and the European Commission are empirically analysed to determine the themes within their arguments. A literature consultation is conducted to reveal the underlying theoretical strands informing these arguments. A synthesis follows that relates the themes within the policy documents to the identified theoretical strands. We find that policy uses a plurality of multi-disciplinary, randomly drawn elements. However, despite this, some patterns can be identified with elements drawn from operations strategy, supply chain management and innovation. By defining these elements, this article makes sense of the policy rhetoric and builds a clearer understating of HVM so facilitating sharper and more structured research into its nature and its contribution to contemporary manufacturing competitiveness.

Abstract This paper explores the competing role of organisational culture in organisational change towards sustainability. Drawing on the competing values framework, data was collected by interviewing senior executives and sustainability managers of a leading multinational garment manufacturing organisation based in Sri Lanka. The study finds that organisational culture tends to play a proactive role by going beyond the compliances and regulatory requirements in organisational change towards sustainability. Four competing cultural values appear to shape their corporate sustainability approach, namely (i) people-oriented changes (e.g. empowerment, training, development, team orientation, leadership), (ii) growth-oriented changes (e.g. sustainability innovations, continuous improvements, community engagement), (iii) productivity- and efficiency-oriented changes (e.g. use of professional recommendations, open communication), and (iv) stability- and control-oriented changes (e.g. sustainability budgeting, investment appraisal, life-cycle assessment). The case organisation is more likely to be driven by an integrated approach of the four competing cultural values rather than by one dominant approach. The study contributes to the organisational culture and sustainability literature by highlighting the importance of aligning competing cultural values as a means of addressing sustainability challenges, in the much-debated garment manufacturing industry in the South Asian context. Finally, a framework for sustainability organisational culture is proposed.

Abstract The total cost of a construction project involves both the cost of production and the transaction costs associated with managing the project. However, we know surprisingly little about the magnitude of transaction costs in construction projects. The purpose of this paper is to provide more empirical data as we study what proportion of the total cost in construction projects is spent on managing the project. We use the analogy of human anatomy as we investigate the size of a project’s head (managing the project) compared to the size of its body (producing deliverables). Using a dataset from 134 construction projects in Norway, we find that the project head consists of more than 18% of the total project cost on average. We also investigate how the size of the project head varies depending on a project’s complexity, size, duration and burn rate.

Abstract This research aims to explore how supply chain integration moderates the relationship between servitization and performance. Based on the resource-based view and transaction cost economics, we identified both the benefits and disadvantages of supply chain integration in servitization. Consistent with prior research, we differentiated basic services from advanced services. Hypotheses were tested using international survey data from 931 manufacturing business units. The results indicate that basic services are positively related to sales growth, while advanced services are positively related to return on sales (ROS) growth. Regarding the moderating role of supply chain integration, supplier integration enhances the positive relationship between basic services and sales growth. Customer integration strengthens the relationship between advanced services and ROS growth but weakens the relationship between basic services and ROS growth. Our results suggest that the choice of supplier and customer integration should be aligned with the types of services to maximize the benefits of servitization.

Abstract Organisations face ever increasing pressure to deliver triple-bottom-line performance results in their supply chains. Yet despite the importance and complexity associated with environmental supply chain performance measurement (ESCPM), organisations struggle to achieve this. The purpose of this paper is to identify the important enablers, inhibitors and benefits to implementing ESCPM as a practice in firms. Data were collected from three focus groups and an industry survey of 388 UK supply chain professionals in a three-phase empirical study. Eighteen enablers, seventeen inhibitors and eleven benefits were identified and ranked in importance. A supply chain practice-based view was utilised as an overarching theoretical lens to conceptualise the study’s findings and propose nineteen antecedents, arranged in a hierarchical framework, to enable practitioners to make effective ESCPM decisions. This paper provides an up-to-date review of the factors which influence ESCPM practice, addressing the need for additional research in this area.

Abstract With the development and evolution of information technology, competition has become more and more intensive on a global scale. Many companies have forecast that the future of operation and supply chain management (SCM) may change dramatically, from planning, scheduling, optimisation, to transportation, with the presence of artificial intelligence (AI). People will be more and more interested in machine learning, AI, and other intelligent technologies, in terms of SCM. Within this context, this particular research study provides an overview of the concept of AI and SCM. It then focuses on timely and critical analysis of AI-driven supply chain research and applications. In this exploratory research, the emerging AI-based business models of different case companies are analysed. Their relevant AI solutions and related values to companies are also evaluated. As a result, this research identifies several areas of value creation for the application of AI in the supply chain. It also proposes an approach to designing business models for AI supply chain applications.

Abstract Process Management Programs (PMPs) rely heavily on the standardization of activities to improve organizational efficiency and reliability. Standardization, however, can lead to rigidity and inertia, which may eventually inhibit exploration and innovation. While scholars have provided cognitive and routine-based arguments to cope with this dilemma, the fact that standardization is a social process that requires collaboration between individuals has been overlooked. In this paper, we propose that standardization can improve a team’s social capital and thereby facilitate the activities that enable exploration. Specifically, we hypothesize that standardization relates positively to external communication, psychological safety, and the perception of support for innovation in operational teams. These three social capital attributes mediate the relationship between standardization and exploration. We tested this multilevel mediation model by analysing 431 members of 62 operational teams in a large multinational mining company that had recently implemented a Process Management Program (Lean Management). Our multilevel mediation results confirmed that standardisation promoted exploration by enhancing the teams’ social capital. For robustness we tested our model with a second survey of 450 workers of different companies and obtained similar results. Therefore, we propose that the productivity dilemma can be balanced by improving operational teams’ social capital.

We tested this multilevel mediation model by analysing 431 members of 62 operational teams in a large multinational mining company that had recently implemented a Process Management Program (Lean Management). Our multilevel mediation results confirmed that standardisation promoted exploration by enhancing the teams’ social capital. For robustness we tested our model with a second survey of 450 workers of different companies and obtained similar results. Therefore, we propose that the productivity dilemma can be balanced by improving operational teams’ social capital.","PeriodicalId":20627,"journal":{"name":"Production Planning & Control","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":8.3,"publicationDate":"2021-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89594999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abstract This article explores how waste reduction approaches as found in lean thinking can be applied to engineering design in Engineer-To-Order (ETO) projects based on a multiple case study of ten companies over a 2-year period. ETO projects deliver capital goods that are customised to individual customer requirements. Customisation and ultimately value generation are achieved through an iterative engineering design process. Although inevitable, iterative engineering design allows much leeway for waste generation, expressed in higher costs and longer lead times. Accordingly, this paper investigates the iterative nature of engineering design in current practice and discusses how these iterations create wastes. It applies the concept of lean engineering design and elaborates on how this concept can eliminate wastes. The findings extend the literature on lean thinking by demonstrating its applicability to engineering design and provide a unique description of the most common wastes found in ETO projects. Furthermore, this article provides managerial implications on how lean engineering design can eliminate wastes and ultimately improve ETO project performance based on lessons learned from the case companies.

Abstract Mass Customization is a generic business strategy for organizational excellence and organizations striving for competitive advantage are incorporating MC into their business model. Though research has been done to identify enablers of mass customization, there has been an associated degree of study in conceptual papers while theory-building articles are less in number. Also, less study has been done in the Indian market scenario. The literature show that organizations are apprehensive of their technological potentials and are not taking initiative to transform themselves from conventional mass manufacturing companies to mass customization for emerging market needs. As a response to this research gap, a systematic literature review is conducted on enablers for MC and Total Interpretive Structural Modelling (TISM) and MICMAC analysis is used to develop a framework that illustrates how enablers are placed at different levels and how a particular enabler influences the other or getting influenced. Supporting this insight, a theory for accomplishing mass customization in manufacturing units is established. The theory is verified from experts by structured questionnaire from three Indian manufacturing companies where Mass customization is being practiced. This paper renders a summary of the methodology and specifies its validation in three case study companies. Practices are suggested to reinforce the attainment of mass customization in organizations aspiring to implement mass customization.
