The present essay is intended to provide an overview of the technical standard for the design, construction and technology of roman floors. For a better historical classification, first, an overview of the roman polity in imperial times and generally on the structural framework should be given. On this basis different contemporary examples of Roman soils are presented, which are then examined in detail in terms of function and purpose.

Using the example of peel resistance of flexible polyurea coatings it could be demonstrated that additional proof of quality for coating systems do not only apply in the laboratory, but also in practice. This parameter may provide crucial additional statements on the adhesion of surface protection systems. To determine the peel resistance, a special test apparatus was developed. The test procedure could be successfully applied both in the laboratory and on coated concrete surfaces at the object. By means of the empirical comparison between the lab results and the minimum peel strength of about 1.0 N/mm found in practice at the object, this additional parameter could be derived in relation to the evaluation of the adhesion of a coating system.

Coating measures shield concrete building elements from environmental influences and surrounding attacks, thus increasing the service life of the protected parts. Aesthetic functions are taken in addition in many cases. In the case of industrial floors coatings enhance properties like chemical and mechanical resistance or tightness against hazardous media. This paper deals with the influences and mechanisms which are responsible for reducing the service life of coating measures. By means of examples from an expert’s point of view it is shown, that the systematized causes for damages can be found in real life – even in combinations. In the conclusions the network between design, manufacturing, application and use of a coating on industrial floors is pointed out, which is necessary to achieve a long service life.

Cracks play a decisive role for durability and service life of reinforced concrete structures. In the contribution very fine micro-cracks, which are usually neglected in durability design were induced mechanically into steel reinforced mortar and concrete elements. It turned out that even finest micro-cracks are immediately water filled whenever the surface comes in contact with liquid water. lt can be concluded that micro-cracks have also to be taken into consideration in any realistic service life design. The penetration depth of micro-cracks in concrete plays a decisive role for service life. The role of micro-cracks for durability can be significantly reduced by water repellent treatment of the cracked surface. Further investigations will tell us to which degree and in which environment self-healing may reduce the influence of micro-cracks for durability of reinforced concrete. (A)

lt has been shown that capillary absorption and chloride penetration as well as carbonation are significantly influenced by application of a mechanical stress. This has obviously an influence of service life of reinforced concrete structures in practice. In the article capillary absorption has been studied under the influence of an applied compressive stress. The influence of micro-crack formation and creep of concrete on capillary absorption has been of particular interest. Results can be explained on the basis of changes of the pore structure under sustained load. (A)
