Rotation invariant face recognition using optical neural networks 旋转不变性人脸识别的光学神经网络

In this paper, we present an optical neural network based face detection system. Unlike similar systems which are limited to detecting upright, frontal faces, this system detects faces at any degree of rotation in the image plane. The system employs multiple networks; the first is an orientation network which processes each input window to determine its orientation and then uses this information to prepare the window for identifier network. We present the training methods for both types of networks. We also perform analysis on the networks, and present empirical results on a large test set. Finally, we recognize the face using Principal Component Analysis approach.

Fractal features based technique to identify subtle forearm movements and to measure alertness using physiological signals (sEMG, EEG) 基于分形特征的技术识别前臂细微运动并利用生理信号(肌电图、脑电图)测量警觉性

This research paper reports the use of fractal features based technique in physiological signals like surface electromyogram (sEMG), electroencephalogram (EEG) which has gained increasing attention in biosignal processing for medical and healthcare applications. This research reports the use of fractal dimension, a fractal complexity measure in physiological signals and also reports identification of a new feature of sEMG, maximum fractal length (MFL), as a better measure of small or low level changes in the human activity. The authors propose that FD is a useful indicator of the complexity in signals and MFL is a useful indicator of the level of activity, and the combination of these is suitable for identifying actions and gestures corresponding to low-level muscle contraction using surface EMG signal and using EEG to estimate operatorpsilas global level of alertness. The results indicate that MFL is correlated with the fluctuations of the userpsilas task performance and putative level.

Adaptive processing gain data with space diversity and truncated ARQ in presence of soft handoff in cellular CDMA 基于空间分集和截断ARQ的蜂窝CDMA软切换自适应处理增益数据

An adaptive data transmission scheme based on variable spreading gain (VSG) is studied in CDMA network in presence of soft handoff and space diversity. The processing gain is varied according to traffic intensity meeting a requirement on bit error rate (BER) at the output of a space diversity system provided by antenna array. Truncated automatic repeat request (T-ARQ) is used in link layer to further improve the performance. The joint impact of soft handoff and space diversity on processing gain adaptation is studied. The overall performance improvement due to VSG based transmission in presence of soft handoff and space diversity at physical layer and T-ARQ at link layer is evaluated. A variable packet size scheme is also studied to meet packet loss constraint.

A proportional intra-class scheduling for differentiated services model 一种针对差异化服务的类内比例调度模型

Aggregation of flows into classes is used to avoid the scalability problems of IntServ model and this requires per-class scheduling decisions. There are number of issues associated with such approach e.g. what will be per-flow guarantee, which flows are to be aggregated together, how to determine service order among multiple classes and within a class etc. DiffServ model is a framework wherein class based QoS support is provided. In this paper we propose an algorithm for intra-class scheduling (including a small modification in buffer management) when number of flows are aggregated within a single class. The algorithm proposed, dynamically selects a disjoint subset of flows to form a class (subgroup) and aggregation mechanisim allows us to define QoS requirement of the subgroup with the use of {Max, Min} operation. We show that the algorithm performs substantially better even under heavy network condition.

Digital signal processing for gene prediction 基因预测的数字信号处理

Identification of gene locations in a DNA sequence is one of the important problems in the area of genomics. Nucleotides in exons of a DNA sequence show f = 1/3 periodicity. The period-3 property in exons of eukaryotic gene sequences enables signal processing based time-domain and frequency-domain methods to predict these regions. Identification of the period-3 regions helps in predicting the gene locations within the billions long DNA sequence of eukaryotic cells. Existing non-parametric filtering techniques are less effective in detecting small exons. This paper presents a harmonic suppression filter and parametric minimum variance spectrum estimation technique for gene prediction. We show that both the filtering techniques are able to detect smaller exon regions and adaptive MV filter minimizes the power in introns (non-coding regions) giving more suppression to the intron regions. Furthermore, 2-simplex mapping is used to reduce the computational complexity.

Modeling the impact of group velocity dispersion on the performance of 2-D WH/TS OCDMA systems 群速度色散对二维WH/TS OCDMA系统性能影响的建模

In this paper, a novel model of Gaussian pulse propagation in optical fiber is proposed to comprehensively analyze the impact of Group Velocity Dispersion (GVD) on the performance of two-dimensional wavelength hopping/time spreading optical code division multiple access (2-D WH/TS OCDMA) systems. In addition, many noise and interferences, including multiple access interference (MAI), optical beating interference (OBI), and receiverpsilas noise are included in the analysis. Besides, we propose to use the heterodyne detection receiver so that the receiverpsilas sensitivity can be improved. Analytical results show that, under the impact of GVD, the number of supportable users is extremely decreased and the maximum transmission length is remarkably shortened when the normal single mode fiber is used. The main factor that limits the system performance is time skewing. In addition, we show how the impact of GVD is relieved by dispersion-shifted fiber. For example, a system with 32 times 1 Gbit/s users can achieve a maximum transmission length of 111 km when transmitted optical power per bit is -5 dBm.

Provision for reactive power market in the reactive power control groups 为无功市场提供无功控制组

Implementation of electricity market is facing many challenges in developing countries like India. The market for real power is gaining more interest of investors while the market for reactive power has less incentive due to its technical limitation. But reactive power is of importance for system security and improving the line transmission capacity. The system operator is therefore willing to buy reactive power from different sources to ensure the necessary potential at each node of the system. The paper discusses an approach for market for reactive power in reactive power control groups using the concept of electrical distances. The approach does not involve any optimal power flow (OPF) algorithm for avoiding the complexity and non-convergence for large systems but discusses a simple and economical market provision for reactive power. The approach is illustrated with the transmission system of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL).

Design of passive filter components for switching band controlled DVR 开关带控DVR无源滤波元件设计

This paper presents a filter structure for improving the performance of switching band controlled Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) and a systematic design procedure for the passive filter components. The switching operation of VSI is accompanied by a band controller which restricts the injected voltages within a band, defined about a reference voltage. Switching band control method exhibits merits such as fast dynamic response, robustness, zero magnitude / phase errors and ease in implementation. The performance of the band controller is improved using a novel filter structure. Quantitative expressions involving the dynamics of DVR and variation in switching frequency are also derived. The passive filter components are designed based on switching frequency and inverter rating. The proposed filter structure and design procedure for the DVR filter components are validated by carrying out PSCAD simulation studies.

The switching operation of VSI is accompanied by a band controller which restricts the injected voltages within a band, defined about a reference voltage. Switching band control method exhibits merits such as fast dynamic response, robustness, zero magnitude / phase errors and ease in implementation. The performance of the band controller is improved using a novel filter structure. Quantitative expressions involving the dynamics of DVR and variation in switching frequency are also derived. The passive filter components are designed based on switching frequency and inverter rating. QoS aware multicast routing in MANETs 基于QoS的多播路由

Unlike fixed networks such as the Internet, quality of service support in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is challenging. They potentially have less resources than fixed networks. Applications like video-on-demand, video conferencing, demand multicasting in MANETs. For such applications, more criterion are required in order to capture the quality of the links between the nodes. Proposed QoS aware multicast routing scheme ensures QoS guarantees (bandwidth reservation, delay constrain and packet loss) to multicast session. The scheme operates in the following sequence: 1) Determine the mobility factor of each node participating in the multicast routing, 2) Clustering of nodes and then select QoS aware cluster heads based on the mobility factor of nodes, 3) Identify the intermediate node, 4) Join multicast group members to the backbone, 5) Set up a QoS aware path for the required multicast route. The scheme has been simulated in various network scenarios to test operation effectiveness in terms of performance parameters such as cluster formation time, number of QoS aware cluster heads, network reconfiguration time. We observed from the simulation that the proposed scheme effectively reduces the network overhead and takes care of the connectivity breakages due to mobility of nodes and the node failures.

Communication Technology has taken a great leap towards the advancement. The new communication technologies evolving in the world have changed the living style of the man. One of the communication technology which has revolutionized the telecommunication sector is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The conventional VoIP applications are useful for hearing enabled persons and do not address the solution for hearing impaired. This paper envisages an application which can be used by hearing impaired persons. They communicate using a text interface and make phone calls. The application provides answers for all the cases where either one or both the users communicating are hearing impaired. This enhancement for the existing VoIP solutions would be of great help to hearing impaired people.
