Mitsubishi Kougaku-Juku: a technology training camp for engineers of the future 三菱Kougaku-Juku:未来工程师的技术训练营

It is noted that it is the ultimate objective of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation that its technology and creativity contribute to the construction of an energetic and affluent human society. A key element in the path towards the realization of this commitment is the Mitsubishi Kougaku-Juku, an intensive, one-year, 600-hour program, covering a total of twelve courses such as mechanical engineering, semiconductor devices, computer science, and manufacturing engineering. These courses are offered by some 100 technical professionals, not only to introduce new concepts of advanced technology, but also to cultivate innovative minds in the students. Both are needed for product development. Every six months twenty students are selected for the program and are expected to show excellent leadership in future projects.<>

Teaching management of technology in European graduate business schools 欧洲研究生商学院的技术管理教学

Based on the experience of the Technology Management Program at the Grenoble Graduate School of Business, France, the author presents the content, methodology, and teaching skills that are currently used in France and Europe to teach management of technology on a large scale. It is pointed out that the formal obligation to organize the innovation process in business management and the revolutionary development in the area of sciences and techniques compel academic systems to include management of technology in all sorts of management and engineering programs. The pedagogy of management of technology must adapt itself to diversified audiences: both graduate and postgraduate business and engineering students. The day-to-day practical knowledge of management of technology in companies has not yet been totally transformed into course contents. The drastic lack of faculty in this area is a major concern for institutions wishing to integrate management of technology into their curricula.<>

Strategic management of technology for manufacturing operations 制造业务的技术战略管理

It is pointed out that the successful management of technology furnishes a critical element in the formulation and implementation of an organization's strategic competitive choices. The links between the strategic choices of cost, leadership, differentiation, and focus, and the key aspects of operations and technology management involved in the formulation and achievement of the corporate goals are considered. A holistic approach to the management analysis process is presented, and alternative assembly manufacturing configurations are used as a vehicle for analysis. It is concluded that careful management of linkages can be a decisive source of competitive advantage, and it develops from positioning the organization in the competitive arena, and then moving toward adjustments in the end-product characteristics, transformation technologies, and operating-control methodologies in a cohesive, iterative fashion.<>

It is proposed that an optimal approach to technology management must integrate the five major technology domains: product, process, materials, decision, and information. Implementation of the model in an organization will increase technology awareness throughout the enterprise, limiting technology dominance by a single functional area. Recognition of the validity of the model forces management to accept technology management as strategic in nature and therefore the responsibility of top management.<>

Establishing a productivity-based infrastructure in a technical organization 在技术组织中建立基于生产力的基础结构

The critical nature of the link between management philosophy at the corporate level and design development philosophy at the operational level is discussed. It is suggested that through the balanced application of seven drivers of productivity, a proactive management philosophy can gradually be developed which generates a method for continuously improving the productive output of the organization. These drivers are proper resource usage, sound leadership capability, organizational effectiveness, consideration of interacting conditions and variables, consideration of personal relationships, effective implementation, and accountability-based assessment. These productivity drivers form the foundation for a highly compatible, focused design and manufacturing philosophy which is based on customer-centered performance, built-in quality, built-in reliability, statistically based operational control, concurrent engineering, cost-effective use of available technology, and sound application of all other resources.<>

Interviews based on quantitative and qualitative questionnaires were conducted with sixteen professors, eight university liaison officers, and several administrators in intermediary organizations which match professors and firms. Data were collected and analyzed on facilitating and inhibiting factors, success criteria, resources employed and benefits obtained, how contacts were established with industry, and a number of other issues. The investigation revealed that AMT is transferred using four interrelated processes in which professors, universities, intermediary organizations, and spinoffs, respectively, have the major role. A number of recommendations have been made for improving the effectiveness of AMT transfer.<>

The method is based on the concept of model datarization (regarding the model as data). The management model can be divided into several basic arithmetic units (called operators), and these operators can be combined to construct any complicated program models. First, a general arithmetic model frame with a large operator matrix is built. Then, according to the user's requirement and the system's reasoning, the system matches the operators and builds a model with relational data pointers (RDPs). Therefore, one stores data pointers instead of models in the model base. When one wants to run a model, the system will call a set of data pointers and then run the general arithmetic model. This method provides three benefits: (1) using a traditional technique, it is easy to implement; (2) it stores the RDPs in the database without any further modification; and (3) the system can access data from the database directly.<>

Using Poland and Hungary as reference points, the author advances a reasoning for western organizations to establish their presence in technical service markets. It is suggested that engineering consulting and design, prototype electric circuit design and testing, construction management, manufacturing process audits, and a host of other niche capabilities which may not meet the fiscal tests of a business enterprise in the short term can pay healthy dividends in the longer term as the host economy grows to accommodate the demands placed on it by reform. As it does so, it will make increasing demands on the subordinate technical service industry.<>

It is suggested that engineering consulting and design, prototype electric circuit design and testing, construction management, manufacturing process audits, and a host of other niche capabilities which may not meet the fiscal tests of a business enterprise in the short term can pay healthy dividends in the longer term as the host economy grows to accommodate the demands placed on it by reform. Summary form only given, as follows. It is contended that the term technology management is inherently ambiguous. It could be read as meaning (1) management of technology, assuming that an organization to be managed is taken to be an entity of technology, or (2) management based on system thinking of technology, assuming that an organization to be managed is taken to be purposeful systems of technology. It is argued that meaning (2) is more relevant and important than meaning (1). The argument takes as its point of departure the nature of technology management, accounts for the evolution of management concepts, elaborates on the demand of modern technology, and concludes on the system perspectives of technology management for the 1990s.<>
