Syzygium cumini, generally renowned as jamun, is a tropical tree that yields purple ovoid fleshy fruit. Jamun is having a very good market value, but due to its unavailability and perishability it is still unexploited. Its seed has been conventionally used in India for the management of different ailments. The present investigation was carried out to understand the chemical composition of jamun seed by analyzing various parameters such as moisture, crude protein, crude fat, ash, crude fibre, carbohydrate and energy per 100 g on dry weight basis. The findings revealed that jamun seed consisted of moisture (6.67±4.76 g), crude protein (5.54±0.26 g), crude fat (1.43±0.02 g), ash (2.34±0.10 g), crude fiber (6.02±0.06 g), carbohydrate (77.99±3.34 g) and energy (347.01±18.19 kcal per 100 g. Proximate composition of jamun seed indicated that it is low in fat content and encompasses with good protein and fibre content. The results showed that jamun seed have adequate dietary nutrients and can be recommended in various lifestyle disorders.

Despite the recent upsurge of interest in rabbit farming in Kenya, there is inadequate information on both on-farm performance and cost of production which are important in determining the profitability of the enterprise. This study assessed these 2 parameters in 6 rabbit farms in Kiambu County. In each farm, 40 weaners were monitored to determine their feed intake, weight gain, the time to reach 2 kg body weight and the cost per weight gain. The type, quantity, quality and cost of feeds offered was monitored. The key determinant of the type of feed offered to rabbits was availability rather than quality. None of the offered feeds singly provided all the required nutrients in the amount for growing rabbits. Forages on offer were low in Crude Protein (CP) content (average, 12.6% vs. recommended 16-17%) while commercial concentrates were low in fibre content (average, 9.2% vs. recommended, 15-16%). On average, a weaner attained 2 kg body weight at 18 (range, 16-19) weeks after consuming 6.6 (range, 5.5-8.1) kg DM, 874.9±163.6 (range, 761-962.2) g of CP and 14723±1868.7 (range, 11535-17643) Kcal of digestible energy with a feed conversion ratio of 6.3±0.7 (range, 5.6-7). Feed cost per unit weight gain averaged KES 164.5 (range, 135.3 -234.4) while the production cost per kg weight gain was KES 280.2. The study concluded that rabbits at the farm level received inadequate energy and protein leading to slow growth rates, delayed attainment of target weight and a high cost of production making the enterprise unprofitable. There is need to evaluate feeding of rabbits with an aim to providing balanced diets to gain body weight and to optimize performance and consequently improved profitability.

The micronutrient Iodine is essential throughout life especially during fetal brain development. The deficiency of which is deemed the single most important cause of preventable mental retardation. Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) is manifested in infancy and childhood, which are primarily influenced by low iodine levels in pregnancy. Using iodised salt is a key to ensure elimination of IDD, for which the knowledge and awareness of iodised salt are of prime importance. The study was aimed to determine the knowledge of iodine nutrition and its association with awareness and usage of iodised salt among pregnant women living in eastern UP. Hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted through random sampling on 200 pregnant women at the regional women’s hospital, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India. A pre-tested interview schedule was used to assess knowledge. Scores and descriptive statistics were analyzed, bivariate analyses were employed to describe and determine the association among variables. Mean age of respondents was 25.23 ±3.75. The majority of the population belonged to the lower middle (38%) and upper lower class (36%). Nearly half had heard of the nutrient ‘Iodine’ and 37% self-reported usage of iodised salt whereas usage as per brand was 81%. The mean knowledge score was 1.53. Three-fourths of the respondents (74.5%) had a low level of knowledge and a quarter of the respondents (25.5%) had a high level of knowledge. These scores were significantly associated with socioeconomic status, usage of iodised salt (both self-reported and brand used) and with an awareness of iodine as an essential nutrient and its deficiencies (p<0.05). The study shows a significant disparity between knowledge of iodised salt, its use and actual consumption, which can be attributed to successful Universal Salt Iodisation; however, the disparity highlights the need for strategic awareness schemes in women of reproductive age.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with neuropsychiatric symptoms and several cognitive functions and is biochemically characterized by a significant decrease in the brain neurotransmitter acetylcholine. The current study is performed to investigate possible interaction of the active components identified from Camellia sinensis (Green tea) with acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) through docking studies using Schrödinger software (Maestro V: 11.8 Schrödinger_suite-2019). Alternative safe ingredients are being increasingly promoted for resilient and sustainable activity, as they are in demand to replace drugs in aqua feed. Curcumin is a multifunction feed additive having immunostimulant and growth-promoting properties. In the present study, curcumin was synthesized and its potency was tested in the water on fish immunity and vital tissue anatomy. Adult Heteropneustes fossilis was treated for a short period (1, 5 days) to a long period (21 days) alone, further, its post-treatment clearance effect (one week without curcumin after 21 days treatment) was studied. The results showed that a mild dose of curcumin (10 ?g/mL) in the medium was able to improve fish health (gill, liver, kidney histotexture) and immunity (direct and indirect haematology parameters) within a short duration and progressed further in a duration-dependent manner. Among haematological indices, some of them increased while others decreased significantly after curcumin treatment. Among immunity parameters white blood corpuscles, myeloperoxidase activity increased and nitroblue tetrazolium registered a decrease significantly, but the one-week post-treatment effect suggested poor maintenance of curcumin induced positive response towards health and immunity. Overall, the addition of curcumin (10 ?g/mL) improved the growth performance and health of Heteropneustes fossilis.

The study was conducted during spawning season (June-July) to evaluate the effect of Moringa oleifera seeds Petroleum Ether extracts (MPE) on gonad development and maturation of Mystus gulio. A total of 72 individual’s adult Mystus gulio (weighing from 72-110 g) were equally distributed in four different experimental groups in triplicate. Animals were fed with four different isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets viz. T1 (control), T2 (0.5 g MPE/kg), T3 (1 g MPE/kg) and T4 (1.5 g MPE/kg) for 35 days. Result of the experiment showed that the significantly (p<0.05) maximum oocytes growth, gonadosomatic index (GSI) value and hepatosomatic index (HIS) value in T3 experimental group followed by T2 group as compared to control. Histological observation of ovary deciphers the comparatively mature oocytes in T3 group. These mature oocytes are characterized by fusion of yolk granules, oil globules and thickening of egg chorion. Feeding with higher dose of MPE (T4) results in fatty liver and hepatocytes hypertrophy. This higher dose negatively affects the oocyte maturation, GSI and HSI of M. gulio. From the study it is concluded that the inclusion of 1 g of MPE/kg diet will improve the oocyte maturation, GSI and HSI in M. gulio cat fish.

Milk, being a good source of proteins, fat, lactose and minerals, is considered a near complete food, especially for infants and children. It is also being treated as a medium to carry health beneficial compounds like vitamins, essential fatty acids, amino acids and phytochemicals whose incorporation fortifies the value of milk. Turmeric is one of the phytochemicals long used in milk which is considered as health drink. In this study, amount of turmeric incorporation, sugar level, fat and SNF (Solid non Fat) level of milk were optimized to get an acceptable quality of turmeric milk. Further, the acceptance of the milk was enhanced by incorporation of cardamom powder. A formulation of turmeric milk was optimized by studying the effects of different levels of these ingredients on the sensory quality and viscosity of turmeric milk. The developed milk had a pleasing yellow colour with added cardamom flavor and a good consistency. This formula can be utilized by dairies to produce turmeric milk and marketed as a health drink for the benefit of consumers.

There are different practices for preparing, cooking and storing foods at home. These practices are generally attributed to women and food safety is an important point in these. The study aimed to determine the knowledge and attitudes of women aged 18-65 years in terms of food safety practices and to identify the lacking points. The study was conducted in 2015 in Konya (Turkey). The sample size was considered as 786. A survey including 44 questions prepared was practiced with the participants, using the face-to-face interview method. Descriptive statistics were summarized and appropriate statistical tests were used. The significance level was set as p<0.05. Of the women, 70.9% read the labels of the products. 70.5% of the participants cook every day and 89.1% paid attention to the hygiene of the place where foods are prepared and cooked and the utensils they use. 92.2% of the women did not know that the animal products that are not cooked at the appropriate time and heat could be potentially dangerous. 29.0% cut down the mouldy parts and use the rest. 72.9% of the participants chop the raw meat, chicken and fish, and vegetable and fruit in different chopping boards. The score of the married, the employed and homeowners was higher than others in terms of food safety practices. In this study, beside correct practices in some cases such as buying food, hygiene, there are some wrong practices in cases such as lack of information about potentially dangerous foods, chopping meat products and others on the same chopping board and cutting down the mouldy part of the product and using the rest. Considering the lack of information or mistakes that may result from habits in practice, believed that education and new studies should be carried out in order to inform and raise awareness in society.

The first energy drink was known about in 1987 and now found in more than one hundred and forty countries. With the increase in consumption of Energy Drinks (ED) among young adults and adolescents over the last few years and the significant health events, the study aims to show the relationship between energy drinks consumption and health problems, like obesity, heart attack and diabetes mellitus. In 2020, the online survey was developed for Saudi females and the total number was 64. In this study around half of the participants (43%) reported being ED consumers and energy drinks consumption was not scientifically associated with health problems. The finding from this study suggests that there is no relationship between energy drinks consumption and health problems.

With increase in average age of population and increasing trend of nuclear families, old age homes are fast becoming a norm in India. The COVID-19 pandemic has made nutritionists revisit the health status of our elderly living in different family set ups. The present study was carried out with the objective to compare the health and risk of malnutrition among elderly (? 60 yrs in age) living in three different residential set ups i.e. old age homes, urban family or rural family. The study was carried out in Hisar district of Haryana state in Northern India. In this cross-sectional study, sixty subjects each (N=180) from the three residential set ups were selected randomly and assessed for depression, level of independence in daily activities and risk for malnutrition. Standard scales viz. Geriatric Depression Scale, Barthel Index and Mini Nutritional Assessment Scale were used. The PAR (Physical Activity Ratio) values for activities performed in a day were aggregated over the period i.e. 24 hours to yield physical activity level. It was observed that respondents from rural family set up were more active as compared to their counterparts in urban family set up or old age homes. Osteoporosis (94.44%), joint pain (87.78%), loss of appetite (85.56%) and anemia (80.56%) were the most commonly reported problems. Per cent prevalence of most problems was higher in old age home respondents. The level of independence for most activities was lowest in old age home respondents as compared to other two residential set ups. Depression was evident in 36.67 per cent of total respondents with higher per cent prevalence in residents of old age home. It may be concluded that elderly people from old age homes have higher risk of malnutrition and depression as compared to urban or rural family setup. Interventions are highly recommended for mental and nutritional well-being of elderly specially those living in old age homes. Considering the increasing trend of old age homes, deeper studies are required on their living conditions. There should be stringent SOP’s for all old age homes and elderly care.
