An increasing number of studies have investigated the distinct challenges faced by male victims of sexual assault. However, there is a lack of research focusing on how they perceive their sexual victimization experience and their help-seeking behavior. This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of cisgender men who had been sexually assaulted in adulthood and their subsequent help-seeking processes within a Danish context. Our findings underscore the crucial importance of acknowledging the sexual assault, which entails a multifaceted process that intertwines with the help-seeking behavior. This process is influenced by various factors, including gender norms, disclosing the assault, and the impact of assault-related symptoms. The role of male rape myths and masculinity is discussed. Our research offers valuable insights into male victims’ experiences and emphasizes the need to raise awareness and to promote a gender-inclusive view on sexual assault.

This paper delves into the utilisation of Instagram as a platform for self-expression and the establishment of non-normative identities among gender nonconforming Malaysian Muslims. Specifically, the research focuses on Malaysian Muslim males who identify as gender nonconforming and analyse their video posts on Instagram. These individuals construct and manifest their nonconforming identities while navigating the complexities of Malaysian Muslim identity, cultural norms, and religious influences. The deeply rooted Malay identity, combined with the adherence to Islamic principles, presents a challenging conflict for gender nonconforming Malaysians seeking to establish their identities. To address this, many gender nonconforming Malay males adopt the “femeskulin” mode of micro-celebrities on Instagram, blending gender nonconformity with religious values. The findings highlight the potential for coexistence and the significant role played by gender nonconforming individuals in shaping “femeskulin” identity and expression among Malaysian Muslims within the social media platform.

Societies have relied on different cultural mechanisms to cultivate appropriate and timely models of heroic masculinity, which have included oral tradition, art, epic poetry, and theatre. In contemporary times, cinema has become one of the primary venues to disseminate masculine archetypes throughout a society’s collective conscious. In certain cases, heroic masculinity can be manifested when characters embrace their valor, courage, and physical prowess for the greater good while eschewing the potentially toxic elements of their personalities and powers. In Ryan Coogler’s 2018 film Black Panther, the dichotomy of toxic masculinity and heroic masculinity plays out through a series of ritual combats. Black Panther applies traditional and historically relevant motifs to show how its superhero addresses the question of toxic versus heroic masculinity; and, in the end the film condemns toxic masculinity by portraying a hero who embodies strength, wisdom, and inclusiveness.

This study examined the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and associated factors among male refugees within a refugee community. A sample of 441 Syrian refugee men from Al- Za'atari refugee camp and other cities was conveniently recruited, and data was collected in 2022 using the revised conflict tactics scale. The findings revealed that psychological IPV was the most prevalent form of abuse, while negotiation, injury, and physical IPV were rare. The age and education level of the men were related to the prevalence of negotiation, psychological victimization, and physical victimization committed by women. Certain demographic variables were found to predict the prevalence of psychological and physical victimization, injury, and the absence of negotiation. The study highlights the importance of recognizing that male refugees can be victims of IPV and emphasizes the need for supportive resources and assistance. Improving living conditions in refugee camps and providing employment opportunities are strongly recommended to address this issue.

This study explores how traditional masculine norms affect mental health help-seeking attitudes in men residing in regional, rural, and remote Australia. Participants ( N = 271) were men living outside of major cities of Australia. Analyses of survey data found increasing endorsement of masculine norms was predictive of more negative attitudes toward help-seeking. Perceived barriers to help seeking partially mediated relationships between masculine norms and help seeking. Full mediation was present for gender role conflict through perceived barriers and help seeking. These findings suggest efforts to improve mental health of men from non-urban communities may consider the way health messages could be targeted to optimise help seeking. Increasing engagement with stakeholders, such as clinicians, community groups, government agencies, and mental health organisations is warranted when engaging men living in non-urban areas.

Fathering a child does not just confer a new identity on a Nigerian man, it encapsulates the essence of his existence. Although male infertility negatively impacts sterile men’s masculinity, it is rarely studied as such. This study focuses on the struggles of the non-virile man in a culture where his existence is deeply rooted in virility. Using Corpus Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis. I examine how the pronoun “I” and its Ngram realizations are used to express the male character’s personal struggles with infertility in Ayobami Adebayo’s Stay with Me. I conclude that an erect phallus is crucial to a male’s positive self-appraisal and self-actualization in Nigeria.

In this article, I set out to study Foreskin Quarterly, which was the Official Publication of the Uncircumcised Society of America (USA). Over the course of its history, it changed editorial hands and publishers hands several times, and with each change the magazine shifted direction that influenced and affected its original goals of foreskin activism. I argue that this magazine braided together pornography and activism in a way that was novel and important because in arguing against circumcision, it also sought to reclaim and eroticize the foreskin in a culture where the foreskin was anomalous and rare. Unfortunately, this magazine has largely gone unread by scholars, not just of pornography, but also of circumcision, and men’s bodies more generally. This article, thus, contributes to a growing body of scholarship on anti-circumcision activism, while also arguing for the importance of pornography in that activist milieu.

The literature on African American (AA) men generally tends to focus on negative aspects of their health, but a more balanced approach is needed to understand positive factors that contribute to their overall well-being. This exploratory cross-sectional study examined the effect of different components of emotional wellness (happiness, self-esteem, and lack of stress) on AA men’s perceived overall health. The Wellness Self-Perception Questionnaire was administered among 115 AA men aged 18 to 45. Logistic regression analyses revealed that only happiness and self-esteem significantly increased the odds of better perceived overall health, with happiness being the strongest predictor. These findings suggest that broadening and strengthening the focus on positive aspects of AA men’s emotional health may improve their perceived overall well-being.

This paper examined how gay men were incorporated into China’s HIV/AIDS policies from 1987 to 2019. We also explored how these policies reflect the country’s broader position regarding homosexuality. A textual analysis method was adopted using China’s national-level HIV/AIDS policies, regulations, a nd guidelines (1987–2019, N = 26). Three periods related to the incorporation of gay men into China’s HIV/AIDS policies were identified: 1987–1990, 1991–2001, and 2002–present, based on whether gay men are explicitly mentioned in the national HIV/AIDS policies. Four ways in which gay men are addressed through national HIV/AIDS policies were identified. Notably, heteronormativity-related moral and sex education remains in place in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic among gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM), while homosexuality has already symbolically decriminalized and depathologized since the late 1990s and the early 2000s, respectively. Additionally, increased education on sexual orientation was included in the HIV/AIDS policy as of 2017. While China’s pragmatic approach to HIV/AIDS has contributed to the increased visibility and representation of gay men in official and public discourse, the country’s response to HIV/AIDS seems to reflect its persistent regulation of nonnormative sexuality as well as moral control toward homosexuality. Other underlying issues regarding China’s HIV/AIDS policies and suggestions to improve HIV/AIDS governance are also discussed.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 Portuguese first-time fathers during 2021. Results from thematic analyses suggested that key moments and experiences were disrupted for these men due to the pandemic, promoting gender role stress in the context of fathering. Positive implications were also mentioned, namely the possibility of greater father involvement in both the prenatal and postnatal periods provided by work-related measures (e.g., telework, furlough). This study reinforces the need for socio-political and hospital policies targeting the promotion of fathers’ inclusion and active involvement during this key life transition.
