Yield of common bean cultivars under semi‐arid conditions in eastern Ethiopia 埃塞俄比亚东部半干旱条件下普通豆品种的产量

In a 14-year period common bean cultivar Mexican-142 gave higher yields (2313 kg/ha) than Awash-1 (2042 kg/ha) and Brown speckled (2263 kg/ha). Relatively large phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation were observed for harvest index, storage root yield per plant, above ground biomass, number of branches and number of nodes of 36 germplasm accessions of cassava. Phosphorus fertilizer was applied at two rates to four soyabean varieties of different duration to maturity at four sites. The P rate had no significant (p > 0.05) interaction with site or variety. In a survey of farmers' attitudes to four Musa hybrids, the majority (84%) considered them superior to the landraces in terms of plant establishment, plant growth, vigour and fruit yield. Growth of varieties of Dioscorea alata and D. rotundata were stunted when they were grown in nutrient solutions containing 5 to 60 mg l−1 Fe. In D. alata variety TDa 95/00361, plants grown in 60 mg l−1 Fe solution exhibited reductions of 29–65% in plant height, leaf length and width, number of leaves, stems and roots, and root length compared to the control. The corresponding values for D. rotundata variety TDr 89/02565 were 34–59%. Tuber weight in D. rotundata variety TDr 89/02565 was increased by the iron treatments but the foliar symptoms of iron toxicity reported for other crops were not observed. The crude protein content of Rhodes grass was highest when 69 kg N/ha was applied. The dry matter content of the fresh forage increased with increasing age of regrowth. The crude protein yield did not vary between the different ages of regrowth as the increasing yield offset the decreasing protein content. Overall, the application of 69 kg N/ha appears to be the optimum level of nitrogen fertilizer in terms of dry matter yield and nutritive value of the grass. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
