Effect of supplementation of tef (Eragrostis tef) straw with different levels of noug (Guizotia abyssinica) meal on worked Arsi oxen (Bos indicus) 饲粮中添加不同水平的乌鳢粗粉对加工过的阿西牛的影响

Supplementing the tef (Eragrostis tef) straw feed of Arsi oxen (Bos indicus) with 1, 2 or 4 kg per animal per day of noug (Guizotia abyssinica) meal for 90 days improved growth parameters. Supplementation significantly increased feed intake, average daily gain, and the weight of dressed carcass and lean meat. Supplementation with 1 kg of noug meal was the most profitable, giving a net return per animal of US$17.10, whereas a sole diet of tef straw gave a loss of US$18.66 per animal. Development of a new tapioca product with tropical fruit pulp and soy extract 以热带果浆和大豆提取物为原料的木薯粉新产品的研制

Tapioca is a traditional product with great acceptability, especially in Brazil. As a starch-based food, its nutritional quality is limited to carbohydrates. The aim of this work was to evaluate the contribution of tropical fruit pulps and soy extract to tapioca's nutritional and sensory characteristics. The products were formulated with dried tapioca starch (63%) supplemented by acerola or mango fruit pulps or by soy extract in selected combinations (37%). The mixtures were homogenised and roasted for starch gelatinisation. The final product was submitted to vitamin C and protein determinations and sensory analysis (appearance, flavour, texture and overall acceptance). Vitamin C content of the acerola tapioca products was significantly increased. Protein content was increased by supplementation with soy but the absolute levels were still quite low. Acceptability by sensory attributes of formulated tapiocas was similar to, or in some cases higher than, the traditional product. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The productivity of tef-sunflower intercropping, with or without fertilizer, was assessed by field trials in northeast Ethiopia. Mixed planting of 10–50% of sunflower with tef had yield advantages of 20–39% and 58–77% at two different sites. The crop proportions giving the greatest yield benefit varied between the sites. Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) progenies in a field trial showed a mean yield loss of 10.3% due to unusable pods. This was equivalent to an annual loss of 98 kg ha−1 of dry beans, and 64.1% (62.8 kg ha−1), 30.5% (29.9 kg ha−1), 4.1% (4.0 kg ha−1) and 1.3% (1.4 kg ha−1) were due to black pods, immature ripe pods, rodent damage and other damage, respectively. Characterisation of a potyvirus from Centrosema pubescens Benth. 一株丛状芽孢中心病毒的鉴定。

A virus, 750 × 18 nm, was isolated from Centrosema pubescens from Nigeria, causing leaf malformation, mosaic and mottling on the plant. When inoculated on to various test plants, it failed to produce necrotic or chlorotic lesions on Chenopodium amaranticolor, but symptoms of mottling were observed. The virus did not infect cowpea (Vigna unguiculata varieties IT82E-10, IT84S-2114, Ife brown, TVU 76 or TVU 2657), but produced chlorotic spots, vein clearing and mottling on soybean (Glycine max cultivars Malayan and Samsoy-2). Protein-A sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) shows that the virus is serologically closely related to Sweet potato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV) genus Potyvirus, Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) genus Potyvirus and Tobacco etch virus (TEV) genus Potyvirus. Comparison of amino acid sequences of the coat protein of the virus with several potyvirus coat protein sequences, using BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) analysis, confirmed the relationships. The antiserum raised against the virus had a titre value greater than 1 : 16,000, using antigen-coated plate ELISA. The name Centrosema mosaic virus (CenMoV) for this apparently new Potyvirus is suggested. The consequences of infection of forage legumes with this virus are discussed. Supplementary feeding of Desert ewes at mating time or for 45 days pre-lambing, or both combined, increased lambing and twinning, gave heavier lambs and gave farmers a greater monetary return. The best return was with the two supplements combined. Supplementing the diet of weaned lambs for four months gave increased growth, advanced puberty, and gave higher conception and lambing rates.
